James felt utterly exhausted, physically and emotionally. He had the terror of thinking Lily was being stalked by a Death Eater - probably Carrow - as well as the ensuing tangle of feelings when he'd found out it was his best friend, instead, to thank for the drain on his emotions. The time since, spending the night with Lily and knowing that she was safe after all, had eased that considerably, but he also hadn't been able to sleep very restfully.
It also hadn't helped matters, of course, that he'd been woken up to sneak out of the house only seconds after he'd finally fallen into a nice sleep. Well, it had probably been at least a couple of hours, but that really wasn't what it felt like.
Much as he wanted to collapse into his own bed, he wasn't really ready to go home yet. He needed to get his thoughts together, get himself under control. He wasn't anywhere near volatile enough to explode at Sirius, which was something, but he still felt hesitant to touch the topic. The truth was, even if the logic behind this particular plan escaped him entirely, James understood all too well how Sirius must feel right now - he'd tried to do good things for Lily, but had gone about it in such a way that had only ended up pissing her off. Merlin, did James ever sympathize with that sentiment.
After getting far enough away from the house, he found a safe place to hide before taking off the Invisibility Cloak, stuffing it into his jacket. Then he wandered down the street a bit aimlessly, with the half-baked idea of heading for the park where he and Lily had gone together. He could sit on the swing and just let the movement of it soothe him for a bit, maybe. So long as it didn't soothe him back to sleep.
A few minutes into this trek, he wasn't entirely sure that he was going in the right direction, but kept going anyway. About a block later, he spotted it in the distance, and headed for it, making a beeline for the swings.
