Who: Fenrir and Jack
What: A date! <3
When: Late December - backdated
Where: drive-in movie
Rating/Warning: low
Going into town from the bayou wasn't something Fenrir did regularly. He was more often found roaming along their territory, keeping an eye out- especially since he'd caught wind of the West wolves pushing dangerously close.
That was another risk with going into town but there were certain areas where an unspoken truce was upheld. One such place was the one local movie theater drive-in that was still in service. It wasn't much to look at but the movies were a mix of modern films and classics on the regular, the popcorn was fresh, and their famous hot dogs were surprisingly tasty for human food.
They'd snagged the pack truck to take into town and Fen had brought blankets and pillows so that they were able to convert the bed of said truck into their own cozy little nook. Now they just needed snacks and drinks to complete the movie going experience- at least that was what Fen had been told was part of going to said movies.
So, there he stood side by side with his mate, his hand squeezing Jack's own as they stepped closer to the small building that smelled like butter and fried food.
"It is...weird they are still playing horror movies?" His brows furrowed in thought. Tonight's selection and been a choice between the airing of The Poltergeist, A Christmas Story, Home Alone, and Die Hard- none of which Fen had ever seen.
--
Jack leaned a little against Fen as they stood in the line shuffling forward now and then. He had glanced around and sniffed for any Wests in the crowd, but so far it seemed there were none. He wouldn't put it past the assholes to start something here. They had attacked a home with a pup, after all! Cruel and uncalled for! The poor kid could be traumatized.
He was pulled out of his thoughts to look up at his mate for the question, "Not really. They play horror movies throughout the year, just more of them around Halloween time. I haven't seen one in a long time, though." His fingers gave him a squeeze, "Wanna share a big popcorn bucket, love?"
---
Fen's stomach rumbled excitedly at the mention of popcorn. Yes, he would very much like to share! He nodded quickly and grinned. "Mmhm. It smells delicious." One of the human foods he very much enjoyed. So fluffy! So crunchy! A mystery of magical corn!
He let his gaze scan over the crowd and was satisfied that no eyes were on them. It seemed they'd be able to enjoy the evening without trouble and he hoped it stayed that way.
"No desire to be scared?" He arched a brow and gave Jack a loving squeeze, nuzzling against his hair and inhaling his calming scent as they moved closer to the stand.
"Movies are still...a bit strange to me. I have to remind myself it's all very fake. Sometimes, it seems real and then I have dreams." His brows pinched with a huff. "I like my dreams to be about good things- like you."
--
Jack shook his head at the question, "No, life can be scary enough for me, I don't need fake scares, too" He chuckled at his own answer and nuzzled his love back, kissing under his ear.
"Don't worry, my mate, I can distract you afterward, make sure you have sweeter dreams," he murmured into that ear happily. "Or, y'know, feed you ice cream."
---
Fen released a happy rumble and smirked at the thought of them eating ice cream in bed like a couple of rebels. "You're giving me plenty of reasons to watch more movies."
As the people in front of them stepped aside to pick up their order at the window near the end, Fen smiled.
"We need one big bucket of popcorn, please." His eyes widened slightly as he looked to Jack. "Do you want butter? I hear they will drown it in butter if you ask nicely."
---
"Of course butter!" Jack answered right away with a laugh. "I know I'm a big proponent of eating healthy, but movie popcorn is always an exception. And a box of M&Ms, please." He smiled and winked at the attendant, then turned his gaze back up to Fen, "Something to drink?"
---
Fen nodded happily and grinned. "I want to try cola again." He'd attempted drinking the strange drink once shortly after he'd first shifted back into his human form and...well, the result had been him gagging and spitting the substance out. Over time he'd started to eat more human food, though, and was becoming accustomed to the amount of sugar that seemed to be laced in so many things. Maybe this time it would be different.
"You'll finish it if I don't, right?" He gently squeezed Jack's waist and dipped his head down to nuzzle against his temple. "Or we could take it home. I'm sure one of the boys will drink it. They like that kind of stuff." Although Fen still very much preferred fresh water and an equally fresh kill, he'd happily eat whatever Jack cooked for him. That was helping him broaden his horizons when it came to food. After all, one could only eat so many raw things.
---
Jack snickered at his choice, then nodded as he leaned into the cute nuzzles, "Sure. You want cola or a lighter soda, maybe 7UP? Still sweet, but less heavy. I like it enough to finish whatever you don't." He ordered them two small sodas, one root beer and one 7UP, just so Fen could try different things. He always liked to see Fen enjoying the human world, he always had a bit of childlike wonder to him when he's learning or doing new things. It was damn adorable.
With their order finished, paid for their items and moved down a window to wait for them with him. His arms wrapped around Fen's waist, "This is nice! We should do this more often, my love. We're both too busy sometimes."
---
Fen smiled and placed his forehead against Jack's own. "Maybe we can make a thing? Like um..." He searched for the words. "A tradition? We could go out like this at least once or twice a month. Just take time away, focus on us having fun."
He leaned in and nipped at Jack's lower lip. "I think we can make that happen. I'll make sure everything is lined up. I can always ask some of the pack to increase the patrols too, just to be extra careful so we don't have to worry. And you already know Jesse will support you having some time to enjoy yourself. You work too hard, mate."
---
With a snicker and a grin, Jack stole himself a kiss from his mate, "Sounds like a plan I can get behind. And we both work too hard. I know you're supporting Jesse as much as you can, but it's hard to keep his dumb ass in line and I worry over him constantly with those asshole West's sniffing around us. I don't know what's going on with him, anymore. Anyway, I just appreciate that you want to help him... now I'm rambling. Yes to more dates and yes to more patrols. You need the time off, too, because Jesse is an idiot." Yes, that's exactly what he meant, actually. He knows Jesse!
---
Fen snorted softly and nuzzled against his mate with a rumble of appreciation. Jack was incredible to him and rambling (or not), Fen was happy to listen. He smirked then playfully prodded the man's side just beneath his ribs. "I don't know either. He may be getting uneasy with how much the West's have been pushing. But I've tried to tighten up patrols and I'm getting more steady reports on their movements now. What I don't like is that once I think I've got their pacing figured out, they scatter and do something totally different. It...kind of pisses me off? I want one of them to step wrong, cross a line so we can lay some justice. But they are smart. Whatever their Alpha is planning, I think he's trying to pressure Jesse into doing the same thing." Fen huffed and rubbed the back of his neck.
"Enough about them."
As if on cue, Fen moved to quickly grab up their order- thanking the man behind the window before approaching Jack with a large grin. "Come on. We have a movie to catch and this popcorn smells like buttery heaven."
---
Jack looked confused by Fen's statements on the West's, like he wanted to ask questions, but his mate was right. Enough about them for now. They had a date to get to! He grabbed up part of their order with him, turning with a smile to head back to the truck, "I can't wait to eat that popcorn and watch you react to soda again. You're so damn adorable, I can't get over it." He bumped arms with his mate, teasing him, and loving that the man still isn't entirely used to their world.
---
Fen gives Jack a warm smile and fights the urge to pounce on his mate, to nuzzle and nip, to remind him that he was the adorable one and Fen was merely lucky to have been found by him. It'd taken him long enough to finally understand what his draw to Jack was, after all. Now, he was steadily making up for all the time he'd spent not understanding that they were mates.
"I still don't see the appeal. It's just...bubbly flavored water? What's wrong with regular water?" He grunted faintly. Although, to be fair, he'd started to adore the taste of Fruit Loops which was about as far from natural as one could get.
"We should have a night where we just try all kinds of drinks and have really good food. Maybe we could cookout?" Ah, the smell of cooking meat! Delicious!
He slipped his arm around Jack's waist and squeezed, leaning in to kiss his cheek with adoration in his gaze. "I love you, Jack. You're truly the best thing that's happened to me."
---
"Sure, we can go down the drinks aisle at a supermarket and buy one of everything to try," Jack answered with a grin, actually liking that idea. "Including waters. Just you and me. Sounds like our next date night."
He leaned against Fen's side as they walked, his head turning to look up at him and smile back, warm and happy, "I love you, Fen. More than anything. Despite our start, I'm glad you're my mate." He set his items down on the truck gate before sliding a hand up to Fen's cheek and smooching on him.
---
His grin grew as he nodded, excitement slipping through him in such a way that his tail would have been happily wagging had he been in his wolf form. His mate had such great ideas! And yes, he was so very lucky to have him.
He stole a couple more kisses before nuzzling Jack's cheek affectionately. The loud speakers of the movies crackled to life with their own special brand of snack advertisements before the previews would start.
Fen nipped at Jack's lips and patted the tailgate. "We'd better get settled in. I brought extra pillows just in case. And blankets." Overprepared as always, but when it came down to surviving anything? Fen was pretty much going to always come out on top with how cautious he was.
"At least you only have to hit me with your jeep once in our lives to knock some sense into me." Although the truth was, he'd take that happy accident a million times over if it meant he'd always end up with Jack Legend.
