Rincewind: Topic: Jobs
Rincewind draws a finger idly through a puddle of condensation on the bar. “They best job I ever had,” he recalls rather dreamily, “was as an assistant librarian. “It wasn’t a difficult job. I had to make sure the Librarian had a goodly supply of bananas. And index cards. He never seemed to have enough. And I had to keep the copper polished in the library of course. And sometimes soothe the books during a thunderstorm, but I didn’t mind that. I had to assist once at an appendectomy,” he recalls, making a face. “I nearly fainted.” It was quiet in the library. Well, mostly quiet. You got used to the noise of the magic earthing. It was even soothing after a while. And hardly anyone ever came in. The librarian didn’t encourage it you know. He was all for reading in general, but readers in particular get on his nerves. He says there’s something sacrilegious about the way people keep taking the books off the shelves and wearing out the words by reading them.” Rincewind frowns. “Well actually, he says ‘OOK’, but you get in the way of understanding him. He dangles you upside-down off the roof if you don’t.”
