"That's what some of the Ravenclaws called you; The Four Horsemen," he explains hurriedly. "You're sure about not being able to change if there's something already there?" He waves his hand at the books. "It doesn't say anything about that. But then, I suppose werewolves and being possessed are fairly rare, thank Merlin, so they wouldn't."
"Now that is an extraordinary coincidence." Q's face is rapt. "Has anyone ever looked into the similarities between Animagus magic and Native American practices?" He nods. "I'd be able to tell if I were a water creature say, or a bird from the perspective I'd get in the dream?" Q gnaws on his thumbnail. "So it's possible I'd turn into a road runner or maybe some other type of bird then?" He grimaces at the look. "According to the Pueblo Indians, the road runner protected you against evil spirits," he explains. "Had to figure out what it was first though. I'd never seen one. Outside of cartoons anyway." He looks a bit sheepish at the admission.
"We'll cross that bridge when we come to it then." He's relieved to table the matter for now. "You can do it," Q points out reasonably. "And I can't. It'd be about the same as me giving you piano lessons." He considers this. "Is it like changing with Polyjuice Potion? You feel as if you're melting?"
"Well," Q licks his lips. "I know it's complicated and dangerous. "And you keep your human intelligence whilst you're in animal form. Or you're supposed to. That's how it differs from ordinary Transfiguration. You don't need your wand to change and any gross physical characteristics appear on your animagus form. Like Professor McGonagall's spectacles." He gives Sirius a quick glance. "Can you talk to other animals when you're changed? I don't mean like Dr Doolittle, but really communicate with them on their level?" He thinks some more. "Oh yes," Q smiles. "You're supposed to register with the Improper Use of Magic Office. So I guess I'm asking you to help me commit a crime here."
I think it will help. Sort of like being able to be easily hypnotised.
