It's not that he was ever what one might call friendly with the Longbottoms (and there have been entire months where he could cheerfully have strangled their offspring), but neither of them had ever been actually cruel to him (unusual, in their year), and no one should end like that. "I don't recall hearing that the cruciatus targeted the soul," he frowns, changing the subject. "The literature I've been exposed to had it as a purely neuromuscular effect." If Sirius is right about that, he might be in considerably worse shape than he'd thought.
