He holds up an outstretched finger for the sparrow to perch on, with a grave, "Thank you," and brings it down to hop onto the saucer with the roll on it once he's taken the paper. Absently (although he does remember to use handwriting that doesn't look like it was stamped out by a spider with the bends), he takes the quill back up and starts copying the information out.
