Sherlock Holmes: Event: Gift: Val
One afternoon, in addition to the usual letters, the postman places a book
in the box of the house that Val shares with Jack Harkness and Zelgadis. Taped to the inside cover of the book is an envelope with: To Val, written on it. Inside are two pieces of paper.
Dear Val-
Having heard about your recent foray into the realm of cookery, I thought this book would be a welcome addition to your library. It is very informative and you will hopefully derive much use from it. However, if I am not being presumptuous, I would like to offer you a few tips:
-Always get permission before using the stove!
-Read each recipe thoroughly before you begin. Ask questions if you don’t understand something.
-Baking soda and baking powder are not interchangeable.
-Regardless of what anyone tells you, carob is not an acceptable substitute for chocolate. There IS no acceptable substitute for chocolate!
-Knives are sharp and the stove gets hot. PLEASE EXERCISE GREAT CARE WHILST IN THE KITCHEN!
I hope you will get many years of use and pleasure from this small gift. Enjoy!
PS- I also volunteer my services as a taste-tester, should you find yourself in need of one.
The second sheet of paper has the following message:
Val-
A cookbook is all very well and good but, as useful as it may be, it is hardly an impressive gift. Therefore, in addition to the book, I have arranged for you and four companions to take a hot-air balloon ride over Salisbury Plain. You’ll be able to see Stonehenge! I have also made arrangements for transportation from Margate to Durrington. Please have Captain Harkness or Zelgadis give me a ring about the details. Unfortunately, the trip will not be able to take place until the spring/summer season. In the meantime, I recommend you read ‘Five Weeks in a Balloon’ by Jules Verne, to get yourself in the proper mood.
I do hope that you find these gifts to your liking and that you had a very happy holiday season. I remain very sincerely yours-
Sherlock Holmes
