For all that he enjoyed Allison's company and wanted to take that relationship further, there was always going to be a part of Matt that still longed for Elena. He'd grown up thinking that they'd get married eventually and, though they'd had their fair share of disagreements, that future hadn't really seemed endangered until the accident that took her parents' lives. And then, in short order, she'd broken up with him for good and firmly closed that chapter of their life.
He'd long since given up hope that they'd ever be anything more than friends, but it didn't mean that those lingering feelings didn't cause a bit of jealously to flare up now and again. Especially if he thought that she was choosing someone who wasn't good enough for her. And with all of these new arrivals to Beacon Falls, and how long she'd danced with Stefan's brother at the Snowflake Carnival a few weeks ago... He wanted her to be happy, of course but with the right kind of man. That's what he told himself.
Musing as he walked, he managed to round a corner and run right into Stefan. "I'm sorry," he apologized first. "My head was on something else." Tyler would've escalated the situation, encouraged Matt to be more macho. Matt didn't quite see how that would do anything to help. After all, Stefan lived there now, and wasn't likely to leave.
