Lily Evans stared at the wand in her boyfriend’s hand. The wavering flame dancing on its tip was black. Not blackish, not blue-black; it was unrelieved black.

“Can’t we do something?” she whispered.

James Potter blinked, as if he were coming back from a long distance. “The only thing I know that can change this is…” He gulped. “…is black magic, Dark Magic,” he whispered. His eyes were wide, the pupils overrunning the hazel ring.

“Could we, maybe we could ask Sirius?” Lily mused aloud.

“No!” James stood up, a scowl on his face. “I’ve seen how he looks at you, Lils. He’d…he’d try to take you away and then leave you alone. All because he can’t…he doesn’t love you like he loves me.”

“Then, who?” She wrapped her arms around a pillow and hunched over it as she thought it out. “You hate Severus, but he’s awfully powerful. And you won’t tell me why Remus is out, but I know it has something to do with the Dark.”

James sat down and hugged the girl he’d just asked to marry him. “I’m sorry, Lils. I want to…you deserve…” his voice trailed away.

“I want your children, James. I’ll do whatever it takes.” They held each other tight.

Severus Snape shoved his lank hair back behind his ear and heaved a put-upon sigh as he ground the billiwig wings to a fine powder. He ignored the sounds around him, trying to finish this last bit before he was done for the night. The bell over the door rang and still he ground the wings. It wasn’t until Lily Evans’ light voice asking for him drew Severus’ attention.

She stood in the failing light of late summer, the motionless air of the apothecary stirred, with motes of dust and other things giving her a hazy appearance. “Severus!” she said with a grin. “I came to ask you to share some knowledge.” Lily turned and dragged her escort, James Potter, forward. “And James has something terribly important to say to you, too.”

“Snape.”

Severus sneered. “Potter.” He looked back down at the billiwigs’ wings, surprised that he’d ground them to a perfect consistency without knowing. “Say your piece.”

Potter cleared his throat. Then he looked around. “There’s no one else here, is there?” he asked.

“No, it’s late on a Friday. The door will automatically lock in five minutes, and the regulars know not to come when I’m on my own.” Severus set a stasis charm on the ground wings and pushed the mortar aside, then set the pestle down gently. He looked up, through the wisps of hair that had fallen forward as he worked.

“You can say anything here. There’s no one but us three.” He crossed his arms.

“Go on, James,” Lily said, her elbow poking him as she did.

“Snape, I know you’re smart.” Severus snorted, but didn’t interrupt Potter. “I’m invoking the apothecary’s vow of silence here.” Severus straightened up at that, his gaze flickering between Lily and Potter.

“I can’t father a child, Snape,” Potter spat out. Lily put a hand on his forearm and looked at Severus with hopeful eyes. “I came to you for help.”

“You’ve done the tests?” Severus asked. As Potter opened his mouth, he interrupted, “On the both of you?”

“Yes, Severus. We did them three different times.” Lily leaned against Potter’s side and then stepped away, toward Severus. “Can you help us?”

“It will most likely be a Dark ritual, Lily.” Severus couldn’t look in Potter’s direction. Whatever his sins, he wouldn’t want to deny Lily a child. Neither did Severus.

“We’ll do whatever it takes, Snape.” Potter stepped closer. Then he held out his hand. “On my honor and my house, I will do as thee deem fit. Thy works and words as good and true, my belief and wand at your call.” As soon as Severus touched his hand the old vow sank into their skins, forging a bond for the moment.

Snape looked up from the papers scattered over Lily Potter’s kitchen table. As soon as he’d agreed to help them, they’d invited him their wedding and to be a regular guest at their table. He’d resisted the dinners for a month, until Potter came to the apothecary’s one Friday and waited for the door to lock at closing time.

“You’re making Lily ill with worry, you know,” Potter said. His arms were crossed over his chest and he stared at Severus, hard.

“I’m not a friend, Potter,” Severus muttered. “I was her childhood playmate. You, you were a nemesis, nothing more. Now,” Severus looked up with narrowed eyes, “now, you’re a client.” He rubbed at the Dark Mark on his arm. Potter’s gaze followed the motion.

“No, you’re part of Lily’s life, and if I didn’t understand it when we were kids, I do now. She’s more comfortable around you than Sirius. Hell, she’d rather have you and Remus as friends than Sirius. Thinks he leads me into too many scrapes and too many pubs.”

He stared at Severus’ covered forearm. “You don’t believe it that shite anymore, I think. For that alone I’d like to make amends.”

Severus straightened up and rubbed his lower back as he stared at Potter. “Are you sharing with me, Potter?” He smirked. “Really, we have come a long way, haven’t we?” He shook his wrist and his wand slid into his hand; he set about tidying up as Potter’s eyes never left him.

“She wants you at dinner tonight, Snape. You and Remus.” Potter held up a hand when Snape’s mouth dropped open in a wordless snarl. “I know, and you know, but this is Lily. All that red hair isn’t just a decoration. That woman’s got a temper, Snape.” He shivered comically and surprised Severus into a barely strangled chuckle.

“Aye, I know.” He rolled his eyes. “All right, all right. I’ll come with you. I assume that’s why you’re here, to make certain I don’t bolt?” Potter nodded and grinned slightly. “Let me change and I’ll be right back.”

That was all it took, after years of hate and snide remarks, a simple vow and Lily Potter’s green eyes had gotten Severus to break bread for three month not only with Potter but with the beast on two legs…

Remus Lupin. Snape had had nightmares of his beastly side and then steamy, passionate wet dreams of his other side.

Severus shook his head to clear the images from his mind and concentrated once more on the most recent Arithmancy equations Lupin had copied out in fine copperplate. He glanced at the scrolls with ritual drawings on them, Dark and Light and in-between magic that could get them all rooms at Azkaban if anyone found out what they were planning to do.

“Snape?” Lupin had learned to get Severus’ attention before sitting nearby. Stinging Hexes and a burning spell had helped.

“Yes, Lupin,” Severus ground out. His head was throbbing from being hunched over the table, but he wanted to finish this night’s research. Black was due for a visit the next night, and there was no way in Hell or any other dark pit he wanted to be where Sirius Black was.

“I found this in the National Library and made a copy. I think you should see it.” Lupin dropped a scroll in front of Severus and then slid into a seat across from Severus. “Lily and James will be coming home soon. Is there anything I can do?”

Severus unrolled the copy and almost swallowed his tongue. “You…you found this in the National Library?” he choked out. His hands began shaking as he pressed it to the table.

Lupin chuckled, a dark sound that brought Severus’ eyes back to his face. “You’d think they’d hide such things, but there’s a charm on it that only Muggleborns or Purebloods can see it.” He leaned back in his chair, lids falling to half-mast as he flicked a glance up and down Snape’s face. “You’d be surprised what treasures are hiding in plain sight.”

Swallowing thickly, Snape tore his gaze from Lupin’s lips and back to the copy. Why I am looking at him like that? he wondered silently, berating himself.

The images on the scroll were vivid and detailed. A woman was on a pedestal, spread-eagled. There were beings at the four cardinal points, doubling as embodiments of the four elements as well. They were naked but for the symbols and runes written on their skin.

As Severus stared, the drawing changed subtly. Fire and Water became one being, making a triangle around the woman. Next, all three beings, aroused men, clasped hands and some sort of chant was performed. The woman writhed, opening herself under their watchful eyes. Severus tugged at his collar and popped two buttons, unaware of Lupin’s eyes lingering on the revealed skin.

The blended being of Fire and Water ejaculated into a bowl, then Air and Earth did the same. Fire and Water scooped the mixture out and painted symbols over the woman’s stomach, hips, and the tops of her thighs. With Air and Earth’s help, Fire and Water climbed between the woman’s legs and then they rubbed more of their combined spunk onto his cock and finally guided him inside the woman. She bucked and writhed, moaning in an ecstasy of pleasure as Fire and Water began to fuck her. Air and Earth stroked themselves in time. When Fire and Water stiffened, Air and Earth orgasmed over the woman on the pedestal.

“It’s a bit of a turn-on, isn’t it?” Lupin’s voice wafted across Severus ear, making him jerk back to awareness. “Sex magic, runes…makes me horny just imagining you naked…Severus.”

Snape was saved responding as the door opened and Lily’s laughter preceded her inside. When she saw the scroll in front of Severus, she came closer. As her eyes caught the beginning of the ritual, she colored up and gasped softly.

“Lils? What’s wrong?” Potter asked. Then his eyes fell on the scroll and they could hear his teeth snap together.

Potter put an arm around his wife and cleared his throat, making Severus and Lupin look at him. “Will this work, Snape?” he asked. His voice was steady even as the flags flew in his cheeks.

“Do you trust me and Lupin to do this for you, to you?” Snape’s eyes were glittering and his cheeks were burning.

James Potter looked into his wife’s brilliant eyes. “I would do anything for Lily.” He looked at Severus and Remus. “I’ll do this, especially if our two staunchest friends can help.”

“You call me a friend now, Potter.” Severus shook his head slightly and began tidying the table, feeling his cheeks cooling. Then he looked up and caught Lily’s eyes. “I am sorry for all the trouble I was, Lily.”

“I think what Severus is trying to say is ‘thank you for the friendship,’ Lily, James.” Lupin grinned, a flashing of his overly-long canines. “Now, how can I help with dinner, Lily?”

“Fine, fine, I’ll put away the melodramatic words for after supper,” James laughed. He hugged Lily, shook hands with Severus and Remus, and then took Lily’s coat.

Lily stepped closer and put a hand on Severus’ shoulder. “Severus, would you do this for us?” she asked softly. “I trust you with my life.”

Severus reached up and put his hand over Lily’s. “It will be an honor. Better than going back to Malfoy and his cronies.” He slanted a glance at Lupin and Potter as they pulled food from the icebox. “Better to create than destroy,” he whispered.

She leaned down and kissed his cheek. “I’m so glad we came to you, Severus.” Lily turned away and laughed at the array of foods, shooing Lupin and Potter aside as she sorted out their night’s dinner.

Putting all his research—with the ritual scroll on top—aside, Severus leaned back in his chair and grinned as the three Gryffindors worked together. “Not as glad as I am,” he muttered under his breath.

**|~**~V~**~|**

Lily looked beautiful, draped over the Transfigured altar. Her hair was wild, the runes ringing her breasts and curving below her bellybutton glowed with a golden fire tinged with bluish-green. Severus helped her find a comfortable spot, slipping a small tub of unguent on a thick cord over her wrist. He leaned forward. “Just in case,” he whispered.

She nodded, falling into the thrall of the potion Severus had given her. Her eyes closed and she hummed a disjointed song as Severus stepped away from her side.

Remus caught his hand and set it against his heart. “We’re making a life, Severus,” he said softly. “Thank you for this opportunity.”

Severus looking into Remus’ eyes and nodded. “My pleasure.”

Remus’ other hand rose to eye-level, a pot of potion-and-semen-imbued paint in it. “Time to give me my runes.” Severus’ hand slide down over Remus’ quivering stomach and twisted over his cock, stroking it twice. He reached up and drew three runes on the purpling shaft and then dabbed three dots on the mushroom head. Remus returned the favor as they listened to James painting on his own runes, a soft chant slowly rising from all three of them.

Lily played with herself on the altar, the chant seeping into her body, heightening her pleasure and her anticipation. When James groaned, a sizzle of magic seemed to blossom over them. It was time for the ritual proper.

James stood at Lily’s feet, his eyes on the apex of her thighs. Remus stood to the left and Severus to the right. The chant became more guttural and a magic breeze swirled around them, stirring Lily’s hair into a red cloud. Remus and Severus stepped closer and began painting more runes over Lily’s stomach and around her breasts. She moaned under their hands, her hands sliding down her body to open herself to James’ eyes.

“Now, James,” Remus and Severus shouted together.

James pushed forward through the magic breeze trying to keep him from Lily, from creating his child. He reached forward and Severus and Remus were there, hands pulling him close and then up onto the altar. They arranged Lily’s legs for him and then he let gravity pull him into his wife’s most tender embrace. All four of them moaned as James sank into Lily.

Severus tore his eyes away from where James and Lily were joined only to find himself falling into Remus’ gaze. They stroked and tugged, pinched and fondled themselves as James fucked his wife. A hush fell over them and then James shouted out the last of the chant, surging into Lily with one powerful thrust. Remus and Severus shared a heated look and came over Lily’s quivering stomach.

They put a hand each on her stomach and grunted out their own chant as James struggled not to wilt over Lily. The magic of the ritual settled over them and into them. Lily sighed and reached up for James as Remus and Severus pulled their hands away.

Remus beckoned Severus away from the altar. They turned to watch James make love to Lily even as Severus wandlessly changed the stone into a soft bower for the two of them.

“Romantic,” Remus whispered as he tugged Severus away.

He closed the thick oak door behind them and pulled Severus into his arms. Snape’s lips were already puckered as Remus bent closer to kiss him. “Jumping the gun, Severus?” he asked against Snape’s lips.

“No…” Severus kissed Remus and wrapped his arms around his lover. “Just warming up.

Severus writhed and rubbed over Remus’ body, their cocks reviving thanks to the mysterious potion Severus had had them all imbibe. “I need you…like Lily needs James,” Severus sighed against Remus’ throat.

“Then have me, Severus,” Remus moaned. They frotted against each other, groaning and hissing as they got closer and closer to exploding. Severus’ fingers slipped down Remus’ crack and pressed inside his channel, finding it slick and loose. “I wasn’t going to waste precious time…” Remus whimpered as Severus bent his knees, got his cock lined up and stood, piercing Remus.

It was awkward, it was tiring, and it was glorious! The potion gave Severus stamina as well as strength he’d never had before. Yet, it was Remus’ soft exhalations and grasping inner muscles that inspired Severus to make love vigorously. When Severus filled Remus’ arse with a deep thrust and a hoarse shout, they sank to the floor in a sweaty pile.

“I’m still hard as stone, Severus,” Remus muttered into Severus’ hair. He turned him over and gently prodded the thinner man’s hole, his grin evident in his voice. “I see you didn’t want to waste time either.”

Severus slid his knees under him and presented his arse for Remus. “I’ve got a lovely place for that cock to go, Lupin,” he sighed.

Remus draped himself over Severus and slowly breeched him, an inexorable slide into heat and lovely constriction. Both of them groaned when Remus was finally balls’-deep. “Move, Remus…move, I’m begging you…” Severus pleaded.

They moved together, Remus’ hands sliding up Severus’ chest and pulling him up so they were both on their knees. Remus’ thrusts were shallow but targeted. Severus was seeing stars with every brush of his prostate, clenching around Remus as he pulled away and surged back inside. Finally, it was too much and Remus came, filling Severus with a growl and biting Severus…on his original claiming mark. They collapsed, Remus turning so he could protect Severus.

**|~**~V~**~|**

Nine months later, when Harry James Potter entered the world, Severus Snape drew James Potter aside and told him the Dark Lord was on the move.

“I won’t let him hurt Lily or Harry, James,” Severus vowed.

“I know you won’t, Severus. I know.” James put his hand on Severus’ shoulder and squeezed. “You and Remus will be the most protective godfathers ever, won’t you?”

Remus nodded. “How can we not be?”

Around the corner, Sirius Black scowled and bit his lip. He didn’t see the rat hiding under a chair.

Thank you for writing this. I read this to the end, but the last line stayed with me. Because it brought up a questions I can't answer even now: What in the world occurred with Peter Pettigrew in the span of time between Harry Potter's birth and James and Lily Potters' deaths?

Those missing years between Hogwarts and marriage for James and Lily and 1981 are mysteries, aren't they?

Thank you for reading.

I really liked James in this- proud, still a bit of a git, but so in love with Lily that he'll change for her. It's a nice balance of the two extreme viewpoints we get in the books.

Was it really a good idea for Remus to bite, though?

Thank you! I was hoping to show he'd grown up, as I've known real men to do sometimes.

Well, with Remus' lycanthropy only being transferred through Moony's bite, it's not too bad...but it does leave some possibilities open, doesn't it?

I do always like when somehow Severus and Lily make amends and this is a very clever way. Very nicely done.

I'm glad you liked it. I like making them "grow up".
