Gatta stood there and shivered, looking out to sea. The ocean was still and calming, giving no sign any more of the danger it represented. He looked at the sea in resentment, to him the beauty represented death, and loss and heartache, more now than ever. He couldn’t cope. It had been too much and now all he wanted was to return to Besaid and forget.
The grains of sand under his nails irritated his skin and felt uncomfortable. Just another reminder of the beach beneath his feet, stained red with the blood of the fallen. He turned his head to look down the beach. The scene before his eyes looked dreamlike. The pyreflies dancing gently upward as the summoner danced, looked surreal in it’s macabre beauty. He looked back out to the ocean again and shivered.
This time the shivering didn’t stop and he sank to his knees.
Why?
He wanted to scream the question to the sea, but knew he would not receive an answer. His throat was dry and sore from calling for fallen comrades, so he couldn’t shout even if he wanted to. His comrade, mentor, and the man he had called friend was on the farplane. At least Gatta hoped he’d been sent. The idea that his friend would be condemned to become a fiend was more than he could bear. Wet sand clung to him, working into the cuts and grazes on his skin but he barely felt his physical discomfort as sobs racked his body, pain and anguish overwhelming him.
Only one thought remained coherent in his mind.
Why?
He was still shivering when he became aware of a dry blanket being placed around his shoulders and a soft voice telling him to come. He stood shakily holding the blanket around him tighter, he took one last look toward the sea before allowing the Yevon acolyte to lead him away toward the temple.
