Caroline didn’t know what Damon’s plans with Katherine were. She didn’t think that anything would happen though, despite his previous feelings for the devious woman. He just needed space, and he didn’t want Elena to see him so broken. That had to be it. The Katherine factor was a mystery, but she wasn’t going to dwell on it. And more importantly, she was going to try and make sure that Elena didn’t dwell on it. Her friend could be pretty big on the whole guilt thing, but none of this was her fault. there were just circumstances here that were beyond any of their control. These were not ordinary circumstances by any means, they’d come to New Orleans in the middle of a terrible power struggle. And it seemed to be developing into a real war. There was no telling what more might happen here, how many more lives could be lost. Bad things happened all the time, that was just a part of life. But here it was a little worse, because so far, no matter what happened...they couldn’t leave. And apparently if they did leave and come back, they could remember anything that happened the last time. That was frustrating, but it seemed like there was nothing they could do about it.
Caroline nodded when Elena told her she was right. She wanted her friend to be able to take comfort in the fact that it was not her, Damon was avoiding. Well, he was avoiding her, but it wasn’t because of anything that Elena had done. Clearly Damon just didn’t want her to see him like this. Caroline couldn’t blame him, though she thought they should be able to support each other. That would have been better. She wasn’t Team Damon, but she knew both of them were hurting so much right now. And she knew that perhaps they could have helped one another. But Damon, he did like to drink. Caroline wasn’t judging. She liked to do the same. Everyone had their own ways of dealing. Apparently his just involved alcohol and Katherine. It kept coming back to that in her mind. Why Katherine of all people? She couldn’t figure it out. But like hell was she going to let Elena worry about or think too much on that. She wanted to keep her healthily distracted. They’d all suffered a terrible loss when Stefan died, but it had to have been the most devastating on Elena, and of course Damon. Elena had once loved Stefan, and Caroline believed there was something still there. She’d been Team Stelena till the end. But Stefan was gone now, and Damon was being Damon.
“It’s for the best.” She told Elena, putting her hand on her shoulder for a second. Letting Damon wallow and drink was what he needed right now. And when he was ready, he’d come back to Elena. If he didn’t, then they weren’t meant to be. Personally Caroline thought that Elena deserved better than Damon. And the fact that he was keeping company with Katherine was basically proof of that. Caroline didn’t want to jump to any conclusions, it was possible that nothing had even happened with Katherine. She might have been worrying for no reason. It was hard to say. She just wished she could figure out that one part of the equation. Caroline sipped the refilled wine glass, shaking her head at Elena. “Now all we can do is wait and see what happens, you know?” That also applied to her and Tyler. If there was even a her and Tyler anymore at all.
When Elena asked about Klaus, Caroline froze. She should have known that this would come up. And she wasn’t prepared to deal with it, right now. She shook her head, wanting to be honest but not worry Elena. “I don’t know, I really don’t...I don’t know what’s going on with that. But what I do know is that he was there for me when Bonnie died. He was the only one...you weren’t here yet and...well, I can’t forget that.”
