"I know-" she broke off when Caroline didn't finish her words. Caroline and Damon had a complicated relationship to say the least. She understood why her best friend didn't like her choice of boyfriend. Damon had fed on Caroline, compelled her, and nearly killed her when he first came back to Mystic Falls. He'd used her in his plans and manipulated her, pulling her by invisible strings like some little puppet. It was sickening. "It's okay," she said instead and reached out to briefly squeeze the other vampire's hand. "I get it. I do. I understand..." she trailed off. Damon was not Stefan and Elena could never make him out to be his brother. "He's not Stefan. He's...Damon. He's different and you're right. I'll give him the time and he'll come back to me." A large grin took up residence on the vampire's face and before she could make the move to pull Caroline into a powerful hug, the blond had her already locked in a solid embrace. Elena instantly hugged back. If she had Caroline, she could make it through anything.
"I'm not either. I promise. I'm staying. If I leave, you leave. We go together," she assured the other vampire and released her from the tight hold. "We'll get through this. We always do." Elena took a drink from her glass before setting it on the night stand. "So, what about you and Klaus? Are you-?" It was Elena's turn to shut herself up and she shook her head. "I'm not going to finish that. I know he cares about you, but I don't think you'd ever be with him."
