Alex was pretty good with the whole guilt thing, it was something she had dealt with for a long time. This place was no different. No matter what Hayley said, Alex couldn't help thinking that Sophie was just another person she'd failed to save. She hadn't been able to save her father, or the other girls from the brothel. She hadn't been able to save Sean Pierce. Thoughts of the SEAL bubbled up in her head, and sent her into extreme despair. There was basically one reason Alex hadn't just ended her life, and that was the hope that she could get back and help Nikita. So far, that hadn't happened. This city might have been the strangest place she'd ever been. She'd been hearing talk of vampires and witches from the beginning, but she hadn't believed it at first. It was only recently that she had started to entertain the idea it all might be real. She didn't belong here. In fact, most of them didn't. But thus far, there was nothing anyone could do about it. They were just stuck. She tried to stay busy, and working at Rousseau's had helped with that. Now though, whenever she thought of that place, she could only associate it with how she failed to save Sophie. She was meeting with Moussette tomorrow at the Maison Bourbon, so maybe she'd find another job to keep her nice and busy. For now, she was wandering. She didn't spend much time in her room at the hotel. She'd spent a lot more time than she liked there recently, while she recovered from the vicious attack. Sophie Deveraux was dead. And others had joined her. It seemed like death was all around. This place reeked of death. It was like there was no escaping it. And sometimes Alex really longed for it. She didn't have much to live for, especially since she was stuck here. |
