Katara listened to Suki's story with a terrible knot in her stomach. She could almost picture the gruesome scene being painted, and it hurt to imagine. Appa was part of the family. Knowing how badly he was hurt was just painful to hear. In a way, it made her glad that neither Toph nor Aang were there to hear the details. She knew there was a part of Toph, however quiet that part was, that blamed herself for Appa's kidnapping. And Aang...Katara could only imagine how he would feel if he knew the state his beloved friend was in.
At Suki's question, she shrugged a little. "He puts on a brave face about it, but Aang is definitely feeling a little lost without Appa. I'm really glad you and the other Kyoshi warriors found him and helped him as much as you could, Suki. It will give Aang hope."
Katara knew what a skilled fighter Suki was, an that she had a mind that could work through a challenge with reasonable thinking. Somehow her presence gave Katara hope that things would start to turn around for them. "We'll help you when the time comes," she promised, thinking of the other Kyoshi warriors still imprisoned. "Right now we're waiting on an 'appointment' to see the Earth King." She suddenly realized how much there was to fill Suki in on.
"Come sit down. I'll make some tea for all of us." With a look to Sokka that almost challenged him to say something about how she could ruin even tea, she left him alone with Suki for the moment.
