Iroh was out in the market today with a specific plan in mind. Today was a rare day away from the tea shop, and he had requested it several days ago. Being as valuable to the tea shop owner as he'd become, Iroh was given the day with only a little hesitance. He promised his nephew would be there for his regular shift, causing the shop owner to grimace and nod.
With a hat on his head and a woven basket over his shoulder, Iroh strolled casually down the dusty streets of the Ba Sing Se market. There was no need to rush today; this was a time to not worry. Like he'd suggested to Zuko only days ago, he payed attention to his senses. The earth under his feet was solid and sturdy, the complete opposite of the air going in and out of his lungs. There were different smells in the air; fruit that was getting too warm in the sun, freshly baked bread, cheeses and sweet wines. As was in his character, Iroh closed his eyes and followed his nose.
He bought enough food for himself and tucked it away in his basket, paying the vendor with a smile. He stayed and chatted for awhile, but eventually bid the woman a good day and strolled further into town. A stand selling liuqins caught his eye, pulling Iroh over simply out of curiosity. Be rubbed his chin in thought. Zuko was already displeased with him for the show he put on at the tea shop the other day. How would his nephew feel if he brought home yet another instrument?
Behind him a child began to cry. Iroh glanced behind him to see a mother trying to comfort her upset son. When it became clear her tactics were not working, Irog grabbed the liuqins and turned toward the boy. He strummed the strings and sang, walking closer to the boy as he sang. "Leaves from the vine, falling so slow. Like fragile, tiny shells, drifting in the foam. Little soldier boy, come marching home. Brave soldier boy, comes marching home."
The little boy sniffled, his tears slowing and coming to a stop. Iroh crouched to smile at the child, who thanked him for the song by grabbing Iroh's beard and giving a yank.
