This is astrophysicist Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin. In 1925, as part of her dissertation, she discovered the ratio of elements in a star. However, although hydrogen and helium were the most abundant elements, a male colleague convinced her to leave them off her report, as it contradicted his own theory that the elements of a star mimicked those found in the Earth's crust.
Although Payne received her PhD from Harvard, women were not permitted to be professors. Instead, she worked lower positions for a quarter of century until she became Harvard's first female professor and department head in 1956.
Thanks to Payne's pioneering work, we understand which building blocks were were used to create our universe.
[Message to Steve] Hi. Sorry I know this is random but would you want to go see a ball game sometime? I'd like to see a game before the season ends and you're the only person I know who might enjoy it.
