Ground Zero - Stark Industries

The closer anyone is to the Stark Industries building, the more everything seems to fall apart. People's faces begin to resemble cubist paintings, the colors strobing between vibrant and muted, between black and white. Skyscrapers resemble silvery ribbons reaching for the sky, waving in a cold winter wind. Here and there some broken glass falls down. The jagged shards embed deep into green spaces and cement without shattering on contact, sending pedestrians running for cover. With reality warped and internal structures seeming strangely intact, unlucky weekend employees begin a mad scramble to escape. They rush down staircases to the lobby, only to find themselves clamoring out of lobby doors to arrive at the wavering rooftops. Many discover it's best to rush back inside and hope for the best. They hope that it will pass. That it won't get worse.

Overhead, the sky darkens with churning clouds and a dense fog begins to obscure everything. Some sections of the sidewalk and streets turn into a roiling bubbling goo that tires and feet alike start to sink into. It is foreboding for anyone trying to draw closer to the epicenter...and more so for those trying to escape.

These are the first threads unraveling. This is reality breaking down.

In the first ten minutes of being in the immediate vicinity of the Reality Stone, Tony wasn't sure what was real or what wasn't. He took two steps forward to wrap some of the nanobots around the stone. Instead, it looked like it was twenty steps back. It was difficult to suit up under the sort of circumstances when one's limbs resembled Slender Man, which was a trip that Tony hadn't taken since his tender years at MIT. He knew what lost weekends were before he was seventeen.

It was impossible at this juncture to tell what the effect radius was. He couldn't help but think about Pepper. When he got a bug up his butt and took off to test out the new scanner, she mentioned doing something that day and that she told him about in a e-mail, and a text, and face to face. Something involving real life things, which Tony thought the following in the midst of trying to fix this shit:

Tech Stuff: No problem remembering that. That was 24/7.

Real Life Stuff: What? That was the stuff that Pepper kept giving him The Look about. That look was real.

Grand Irony: The Reality Stone bitch-slapping everything and everyone in the face. Including his baby mama that he needed to marry ASAP, if they could keep the stone from warping everything to Hell and back.

Bonus: He'd kind of like not to mess up the planet again.

In a stroke of luck in their favor, he bumped into a lab table hard enough that it jarred him. As he winced at what felt like a punch to the kidneys, the suit was able to finish forming over him and he began talking. Quickly.

"Yay! Friday, we're gonna mock up some sort of containment with the nanobots if we're in range. Let's scan this and see where there's any fluctuation that can let me get closer to....Jane and Hope."

'I'm on it.'

It occurred to him that they looked - supposedly, it was hard to tell - much closer to the stone than he was. When he started to suit up, it must have registered him as a threat and warped reality to move him further away.

He activated the outbound comm and told them, "Understatement of the decade here, but I think it's pissed off. Maybe try saying something nice? You know, without tea bagging it again."

Reality seemed to bend and change, distance warping. Jane was reminded of Lewis Carroll, who wrote Alice in Wonderland. She'd read somewhere that he hadn't just been high off his guard when he described the trippy scenery and objects changing in shape but that he had migraines which distorted his perspective. It must have been something like this. Everything is askew and Jane nearly empties the contents of her stomach onto her shoes.

When she straightens, all she can think about is red. Her body thrums. She could take the stone. Use it. She's had it once before. Why shouldn't she?

Jane remembered watching the stars go out.

"Make it stop!"

Hope was always prepared with the Wasp suit. When everything started to look like a Tim Burton film on meth, she donned her gear - and shrunk, wings frantically fluttering to lift her and bring her, at high speed, to where she knew she needed to be. This was the work of one thing and one thing only.

Zip, zip through the air - and her goal had been to keep her head on straight, to bypass all the walking, talking cube art and kaleidoscope of weird, by her shrinkage and the Pym Particles doing their job of shifting matter into the Kosmos Dimension; it was fighting a reality warp with a bit of a reality warp of her own, and it seemed to do the trick.

Because she got to the stone, safely. A tap of the growth mechanism brought her back to her normal size, still wearing the suit. She saw Jane and went to her immediately - now, Hope wasn't really all that touchy-feely; she didn't give out warm hugs on a cold day (she was a cold day), but she put her arms around Jane not just to hug her, but to hold her back from doing something she'd no doubt regret.

"No one's going to hurt you," she spoke - to the stone, who could obviously hear her. The only option they had was to convince it to return to a state where it wasn't angrily showing off what it could do. "I promise. I wouldn't make a promise I couldn't keep."

Glowing red energy whipped around the stone. It diminished a little when Hope spoke, the warp lessening only slightly. It was enough of a response to make it known the stone was listening and responding such reassurance.

Still further away, Tony was still trying to make it over there. He even trying to go full thruster more than once, with little success. With the reality warp happening, it made it impossible. When the stone's influence lessened, he was able to move forward and Friday was able to display a read out of the energy fluctuations.

"Uh, that's working? I got something over here. Keep doing that thing you're doing," he told them both on the outbound comm, trying not to keep the volume up to eleven. "Jane, it's ok. Please don't touch the shiny."

That shiny didn't seem to like yelling or hot beverages. He gave Hope a thumbs up like she should keep going. If he could get close enough, he could wrap a nano-case around it. Then Hope could whisper sweet nothings to it as they took it back to a cozy underground super bunker.

One that was going to have some soothing classical music funneled in.

Jane's memories were full of red and and her vision full of fractals. Perfect Fibonacci spirals. The path Hope flew seemed to twist, spiral out from out from itself the way lightning forked.

"Do something," she told Hope. Sometimes she thought her body remembered the stone on a molecular level and right now all she wanted was to pick it up.

Oh geez. Playing therapist to a damn infinity stone. This was the last thing Hope ever saw herself doing, but she was here and she had to do it - if it was going to be up to her to soothe a pissed off hunk of power, then so be it.

She tried to think of what her mother would say. Janet was always a lot warmer, a lot more caring - Hope was too much like her father. Probably because a distant Hank had been all she'd been left with, when her childhood came to a screeching halt after Janet disappeared, and she was without a mom to provide those soothing platitudes and help her deal with bras and boys. There were still times when Hope feared she wasn't as compassionate as Scott thought she was.

But no, damnit. These were her friends. This was her life - no chunk of rock was going to mess that up. "Please calm down," she implored the reality stone, her voice firm above the din - and she stayed focused even throughout the laser light show. "We won't stop you from existing - we can work together instead. If Thanos gets you, you'll be destroyed after he puts you in his gauntlet - but not us. We'll make sure nothing happens to you. You'll be safe. But you have to calm down."

God, this was insane. She needed a stiff drink. Maybe some more of that Asgardian mead.

Ground Zero - the stone is contained!

The stone turned them from a cubist nightmare to something more akin to a surrealist painting. With reality twisting and turning around them, it was hard to say how much time was going by. They were blotchy as the energy started to ebb down gradually, enough that the warp seemed to be shrinking in on itself. Finally, blessedly, everything grew more and more calm, as Hope reassured the stone.

It was difficult to tell how much time passed as Tony nudged his way forward until he was close enough to where the stone was to spray some nanobots over the top of the scanner plate, encasing the stone.

Everything that was floating or in pieces reformed or landed with a clatter. Which was a lot of stuff, considering the racket that it made when it hit the floor.

Tony wanted to drop along with it. When he got a chance to uncross his eyes and focus on the HUD, he noted that nearly two hours went by. In the space of that time, he knew what it was like to be turned into a Picasso, a Monet, a Pollock, and a Dali. At one point, he was sure he resembled a cross between a Lovecraftian deep sea nightmare and someone from a furry convention — heavy emphasis on the 'furry' part.

Listening to Ross screaming about this was going to be 'fun'...along with all of the obligatory threats that came along with it. He was going to have to do a lot of diverting and playing stupid, and a lot of clean up if things didn't revert to normal.

"....ohh~kay, hopefully, we have all our fingers and toes," Tony said, the helmet shifting away into the rest of the suit. "Let's agree not to say or do bad things to the shiny, and we'll text someone who can quickly port. That way we can put the One Thing back in the upstate Hulk bunker."

He wanted to say 'and rig it to blow' but he didn't think it a wise idea, after Hope just talked some dangerous bling down from a flailing freak out.

The world reformed. Jane swore she could feel her molecules realign. Her stomach swooped dangerously and this time she really was sick onto the floor.

"Sorry. I - sorry," she said backing away from the mess and catching herself on a table for support when her head spun. "That stone and I don't have a good history." She took a deep breath and tried to banish the image of a sky gone dark from her mind. "Thor's going to be so smug. He can take it, if you don't want to fly it."

"Whichever is fine, as long as it gets to where it needs to go," Hope put in, having managed to act quickly enough to hold Jane's hair back during that impressive trip to Vomit Town. She patted her fellow scientist's back, finding a bottled water in the chaos that was the formerly reality-warped lab space and handing over the refreshment. "Drink this."

She didn't care if Thor flied using his hammer-magic, or Stephen arrived and used one of those sparking rings of fire or whatever - but as long as the stone was 'out of sight, out of mind' she would rest easier.

And that bunker better be really well-fortified.

Considering that Banner set it up to stop himself, it was well fortified.

Tony looked around at a lab that was going to need a lot of clean up and knew that his second call was going to be to the Department of Damage Control. Before his phone started ringing so he could navigate the blame game, he took what Jane and Hope said into account and popped off a text to Strange. That might save on some awkward smug going on. Things were awkward enough already.

"Strange will take it," Tony told them. "I gotta hit the office and field some calls. You know, clean up crews. Speaking of?"

He wagged a pointy finger down at that yak that happened.

"Don't slip in that. Friday, get a mop machine to get up here and squeegee up Foster's barf."

As Friday said 'right away,' Tony disappeared into the adjacent office space just as several phone lines started ringing.
