"You really don't need to do this, you know."
"I want to", Steve said where he stood behind the counter next to an old man who managed to stand proud while being unable to fully stand upright, supported by a cane. Steve himself was dressed in a plain white t-shirt with a black and red checkered flannel over it and a pair of blue jeans with an apron tied around his waist. "This place feels as much like home to me as anywhere else." Despite not bearing the mantle or the shield Steve loved his country and, perhaps more than that, the men he had once fought and bled beside.
The 107th Infantry Regiment.
For years growing up he had always fantasized about joining the military and, specifically, the 107th. The same unit his father fought in during the First World War. Joseph Rogers, whose name was engraved among others along one wall, had never encouraged the dream and if anything had tried to discourage Steve at every turn. Initially because of the horrors he had witnessed in the trenches and then, even more so, because of Steve's condition.
The only time Steve had ever violated the law-aside from his escapades against the Sokovia Accords, of course-had been in his failed attempts to join the unit under different aliases, each time with the same result. Unfit for duty. If not for Erskine he never would have had the opportunity to achieve his dream, to bear the shield, to meet Peggy...
"You ok, son?"
Steve recovered after a moment, shaking off the memories that flooded him. "I may not look it but I'm just as old as you, O'Connell."
"Yeah? I ought to be so lucky. See if you look this good in another sixty years, Captain." O'Connell clapped Steve on the shoulder and made his way past him, across the Legion Hall to where a few more veterans sat around a table playing cards.
Smirking a little to himself Steve shook his head slowly and turned when he heard the doors open, already getting ready to serve up some more food.
