Who: Thor and Jane
What: A cute filler in their backstory
When: A week after the Convergence
Rating: Green-ish. Alludes to smooshing time, but nothing explicit. Might get a cavity from the sugar though.
Thor was bored. The first week after the convergence was, without a doubt, the best week of his life. His leave of absence allowed him to confidently stay with Jane, knowing that he'd have some time with her before duty reared its ugly head. If he was honest, although he'd had many a daydream about the situation, it was not quite how he expected it. Firstly, even though he knew how important Jane's work was, he hadn't really grasped the enormity. Now, there was no way to avoid it, and he was impressed with how she managed to have enough time to study, research and invent with his pressing demands. Secondly, he didn’t realize how utterly lacking he was in domesticity. Things that Jane did with ease, such as laundry or cooking, he had troubles. He was currently lounging on the sofa, frowning as he tried to make sense of the microwave instructions. As usual, he was wearing that Donald Blake person's clothing as he'd quickly realized armour wasn't conducive to every day life. Perhaps a third thing then. With a sigh, he threw the booklet to the floor. "Jane," he called out. "Is your data compiling yet? I miss you."
The days since Thor's return had almost been a fantasy. For the first time since they met, he was here and there was nothing to call him away. It was wonderful and new and just a little bit strange. It reminded her a little bit of that first weekend in Puente Antigua, when he'd just been a potentially insane guy borrowing Don's old clothes. Now she knew he wasn't insane but Thor was still in those same clothes. They were really going to have to do something about that. First she had to get this data set loaded. The amount of raw data their equipment had picked up during the equipment almost made her head spin. It all had to be input, organized, and analyzed for patterns. As a once in a thousand years event, this was their only chance to understand foundational things about the way gravitational fields intersected with each other to make something new. What Jane might learn about the formation of the portals between worlds could open up avenues in her own work to build a bridge she could only begin to imagine. But before any of that could happen all of that information had to be computed. Jane had already designed and discarded several algorithms to sort through it all. Time when the calculations ran was quickly becoming built in break time. Data crunched and Jane could give Thor her undivided attention. "Almost!" she shouted back from the office where she was hunched over a laptop. "Couple more minutes!"
He groaned loudly and allowed himself to slide off the couch as if in protest. He'd learned quickly that a few minutes almost always meant several hours, which left him to his own devices. Again. In borrowed clothes he wished to dispose of. Looking under the couch (and after counting how many hair elastics he found) he decided enough was enough. Getting up, he walked to where she was hunched over the laptop. Leaning down to nuzzle the top of her head, he started to rub her shoulders slowly. Maybe if he reminded her that he was here, she'd pay attention. Unlikely, as this wasn't his first attempt, but maybe it'd be his most insistent one. "Jane...." he said softly. "Pay attention to me..."
How long had she been working? Jane's coffee had gone cold. "I'm so close..." Her hands were typing at the keys but she couldn't help the way her shoulders relaxed and the low satisfied noise she sighed out. "I really am almost done."
Thor gave a low growl as he trailed his hands down her arms, resting on her hands. Tiny hands. "You said that a half hour ago, beloved. How can you allow me to waste away here, unloved and unnoticed? What a cruel mistress you have shown yourself to be," he said, peppering her cheek with kisses.
Everything with Thor was exciting and new. This teasing was no different. Only a few days ago, she'd seen him battle nearly to his death. Now Thor was playful and Jane found she liked this version of the thunder god. Being called 'beloved' in that voice might be the best thing that had ever happened to her. She just had a couple more lines of code to enter. "Oh hush," Jane said, giggling at the tickle of Thor's beard against her cheek. Her fingers were still reaching for the keys. Only a couple more lines. "You know you love me." It wasn't until after the words were out of her mouth that Jane realized their weight. Beloved or not, that was too much too soon. Wasn't it?
Thor didn't even notice, too busy trying to get her to look at him and kiss him properly. "Of course I do," he responded easily, wondering if she'd kill him if he closed the laptop. Probably. "Why else would I be here with you? You and only you hold power over my heart." Was that his pouty face coming out? "Which is why I am so lonely right now, and yearn for you."
It was easy sometimes, to lose track of what Thor was saying in the old-fashioned way he said it. Jane furiously typed the last of her code and set it to run. "Compiling," she announced, spinning around in her chair and turning her face up to look at him. "Told you I was almost done." Jane stood, stretching out her stiff muscles. It was hours since her last break. She draped her arms over Thor's shoulders. Maybe this was too soon to say but they weren't working on an Earth timeline. Besides, it was true. "I love you."
Thor beamed at her. "Good. I'm glad that's settled then," he said, finally able to kiss her lips. "I love you as well, my heart, and that is why I wish badly for you to shower me with affection." He peeked behind her, but the numbers on the screen meant nothing. "Are you finished for the day? Am I allowed to have my wicked way with you now or do I only get to revel in your presence for mere minutes?"
"Oh I see," Jane laughed, letting her fingers trail through his hair. "You love me and that's why I should show you affection." She nudged her nose against his, deliberately not kissing him. It was her turn to tease. "It'll be a couple hours while it computes but maybe I don't look at the results until tomorrow."
He raised an eyebrow and grinned. An entire day without that infernal machine? That was a promise he'd take happily. "And what shall we do with all this time? I am open to all ideas... as long as they eventually lead to new clothing." He kissed the tip of her nose. "I look terrible in these."
"We do need to get you some more clothes," Jane agreed. "Are you interested in shopping for new clothes or are you just trying to come up to take these clothes off?"
"However my lady wishes to interpret that," he said, tugging at her hands to pull her closer. "I am at your disposal."
"Uh huh." Jane raised her eyebrows and then grinned. "How about we do that part where the clothes comes off, then later we can go out and and see about getting you new stuff. Deal?"
Scooping her up easily in his arms, he smothered her face in kisses as he carried her to the bedroom.
It wasn't until afterwards, when they were laying in peace, quiet in their afterglow, that he brought up what she said.
"Did you mean it?" he asked quietly, his hand intertwined with hers. "What you said earlier?"
They were getting good at this bit. It was still new and wonderfully exciting but starting to get to that good part where they knew just what the right thing was. Jane was happy, her head on Thor's shoulder and one arm thrown across his chest, his fingers entwined in hers. "Hmm? Not working? I don't think I'll have time if we're going shopping. It's getting late."
He shook his head. Clothes was honestly the last thing on his mind...which was probably why it'd been almost a week without dealing with the issue. If he had it his way, he wouldn't be bothered at all with them. The way he felt, he'd prefer never to leave her bed. Their bed, he corrected himself. He liked the sound of that.
"No...about love. You said you loved me."
Had she misinterpreted the beloved and my heart stuff? Jane hadn't thought so but maybe those were just flowery words on Asgard where you had centuries before needing to define the relationship. Even if they were, Jane could only say what was true for her. Maybe it was fast even for Earth but technically it had been two years since they met. Pretending she felt otherwise only lead to crying and ice cream and babbling sea bass to nice guys who really didn't deserve to be pulled into whatever her life was. "Yeah. I mean, I know it's only been like five minutes in Asgardian time and you're just coming off some really hard stuff with your mom and Loki and everything but I can't not feel things. I tried that and it was a mess. But if you're not or you don't we can just go get you some new jeans and stuff and it's fine." Jane finally stopped talking and stared up at the ceiling, trying hard not to think about how Heimdall was always watching.
Thor had no intention of setting Jane off, but he realized quickly he had gone about it the wrong way. He'd only wanted to hear it again.
"Jane," he said, shifting so he was on his side and able to see her face to face. "My beloved, I would never dream of telling you how to feel. I return your sentiments fully. You...have no idea how long I yearned for this moment, for this opportunity between us. You have my heart, and my love for as long as you desire it." He reached up and brushed his hand across her cheek. "I love you, Jane Foster. Wholly and completely.
Jane turned her face so she could press a kiss to Thor's palm. "I love you." She moved, pressing him onto his back and rolling on top off him.
And again, it was some time later before even he had to admit, they really needed to get some things done. "The sun is starting to set," he said idly. "I believe I am doomed to never wear proper clothing again." He looked over the edge of the bed at the discarded clothes and wrinkled his nose. "I really do not look forward to wearing that again."
"Yeah," Jane sighed. "Remnants of Don wasn't my favorite solution. I probably should have sent you out this week with Darcy but..." she shrugged. Even when Jane was working, they hadn't wanted to be far from each other's company. "What are you looking for? Do you," she waved a vague hand, "have any money?
Did he have money? On Asgard, of course he was wealthier than most. It was a constant in his life, being a crown prince. Things like money was for others to worry about, like advisors. Tony had mentioned an allowance, but since Thor had minimal expenses, he never really asked about it.
"Mmmmm, I suppose not," he admitted. "I do have something though." Extricating himself from her, he padded over to the corner, where he'd freely dropped his things. Digging around he found a small bag that he brought back to the bed. "This should be worth something here, no?"
"Oh my god," Jane coughed. She picked up a stone, mouth agape. "Yeah, that's worth something. It has to be sold first though, which I don't quite know how to do. I can find out. If you want stuff tonight, I've got some room on my credit card but you'll have to be practical. Everything I buy is on a budget." Jane frowned, a little uncomfortable about admitting that when Thor had literally just handed over a pile of gemstones.
"I do not wish to be a burden," he said with a frown. If this had been two years ago, maybe he would have insisted otherwise, accepted everything from Jane without a second thought but he'd matured and outgrown his selfish ways. "I throw myself upon your mercy. I am very much the outsider here, so whatever decision you see fit, I shall accept."
Jane reached out to him, resting her hand against his cheek and stroking her fingertips against his cheek. "It's fine. You can't keep wearing the same two sets of Don's old clothes. We'll be practical, get some jeans and T-shirts, underwear. Then when you get the money from selling your gems if you want something different or higher quality, you can get what you want."
Whatever he wanted.... Thor tried to remember the last time he went and actually purchased something. Almost everything he owned was custom made and tailored to his specifications, as befitted his role. The idea of shopping was a foreign one.
"If I am properly attired, does this mean we can explore more of this town? I've been here a week, and we've yet to leave the apartment." He added quickly, "Not that that's a problem, of course. I'd be content to remain at your side until Ragnarok but... I really would like to get out."
Jane would have to do better, she realized. While she was happy to spend all day at the lab, Thor was used to action. No wonder he'd come looking for attention today. If this was going to work, Jane was going to have to commit to stepping away more often. It wasn't a fair partnership otherwise. "I'm sorry I've been so busy. I tend to get sucked in. I'll try to find a better balance. It'll be nice to be out with you. You're not nearly so recognizable out of the armor, pull your hair back and maybe we'll get lucky and no one will realize it's you."
Thor didn't see why it would matter if he was recognized. He'd lived his life in the public's view, all 1500 years of it. But if Jane wanted the anonymity, he was happy to attempt that.
"As my lady wishes," he said with a smile. "I'd suggest a shower, but then we will never leave this place.". He really did love the indoor plumbing.
Sighing, he reached over for his clothes. Maybe he'd burn them after.
