Who: Jane Foster and Thor
What: Another dream
When: Sometime in the night after the party
Where: Guest room at Casa Asgard
Rating: Green
Jane had stripped down to her cami, kicked off her jeans, dumped her bra on the floor, and tried to make herself comfortable in Thor's guest room. After a couple old fashioneds, Thor's offer stay instead making her way back tipsy to her own place made sense. Settling under the covers though, she couldn't help feeling she was somewhere she didn't belong. Maybe that was the reason for the dream. That or the whiskey.
Jane was floating through the infinite limit of space. Stars, galaxies, and nebulae washed red. They called to her. The universe was hers to make as she wished She stared into the heart of the universe and watched as it went dark. All the stars swirling around around her swallowed by infinite night...
Someone was shaking her awake. "What! What!" She reached out to put put a hand on the forearm of who had her by the shoulders. Even in the grey half dark, she recognized Thor. Jane still remembered the feel of him. She felt herself settle back into her skin. "It's okay. I'm okay."
"Are you sure?" Thor wasn't okay. The night had gone as well as could be expected, even if he was watching Steve and Jane a little more closely than he normally would. In the end, she had taken his offer to remain, and in the process practically assured that Thor would be up for most of the night.
He was glad for his troubled slumber when he heard her cries in the middle of the night. Within seconds he was at her side, looking down in worry at her thrashing body. Hesitating slightly, he decided waking her would be the best course, which he did.
"You had a nightmare," he said softly, resisting the urge to brush her hair from her face.
"Yeah." But her words were too soon and when Jane straightened to sit up further, her head spun a little. "Mmmph." She reached out to steady herself against his arm again. "Okay, I wasn't that drunk, was I?"
Thor shook his head. "You drank nothing more than your customary drink, and only a few at that." He tilted his head. "Do you feel alright? Should I fetch you some water?"
"I'm okay," Jane repeated, "I dreamed of the aether again."
There was that tightness in his chest again. "Another dream. Is this becoming a nightly occurrence?" He furrowed his brow. "Jane...we must consult with Strange -- I mean, you," he corrected himself. "You should speak with him."
Jane took a long breath and shut her eyes. "Do you think it did something to me? That much power...maybe it changed something."
That was his exact concern. No one knew the depths of the Aether anymore ...except Thanos perhaps, and Thor refused to let his mind go dwon that path. Even his own father had researched, had put every scholar on Asgard to work to try to learn the true power of the Aether, and yet they understood it no better than before. He should have joined the scholars in their pursuit, maybe slept less, something, just so he could answer her questions but he did not. As usual, he chose to fight rather than learn. He ached deep inside at having to admit he had no useful knowledge, nothing he could do to actually protect her.
"I do not know," he said finally. "There is only one other person I have heard that was able to withstand the full brunt of the stone. That..Star-Lord, the space captain. He stated he held one and seems to be suffering no ill effects." A pause. "I believe he also mentioned that he is a celestial being, which I do not think is the case with you." Talking out loud didn't seem to be helping either. Smoothing out the wrinkles of the bedsheet, he sighed deeply. "Do you feel changed?"
"Besides these dreams, I feel the same. I mean, I don't feel any different. I'm not a biochemist. I don't know. Past couple of nights I wake up feeling weak like I did before, when I had it." Thor wasn't going to like that that. Jane didn't kid herself about that.
"All Peter did was hold one? It's not exactly the same." Then, curiously, "What's a celestial?"
She was right -- he didn't like that. If the dreams were increasing in intensity, it had to mean something. Thor felt so helpless. This was not a foe he could defeat with his fists. It would require more than him, and he knew it. Looking at Jane, he tried to soften his expression. He could feel his jaw tightening and he did not want to frighten her any more than she was. "A celestial being ... I believe in your lore that is something akin to an angel, or a servant to God. In the universe, celestials are the oldest living beings who have transcended their physical bodies and exist on a level beyond that which most can comprehend. They are not a prolific species." In fact, Thor had absolutely no idea how Peter, a Midgardian, could claim such parentage. He'd never heard of a half-Celestial being.
"I'm no angel," Jane snorted. She turned her face up at Thor and then seemed to decide something. "Sit if you're staying. it's making me dizzy to look up at you."
Thor hadn't even realized he was still standing, but now that she mentioned it, he felt suddenly awkward. "I can leave if you would like? Whatever your preference is, Jane."
What Jane wanted was for Thor to get in to bed and for her to drift back to sleep wrapped in the familiar safety of his arms. She could hardly say so. People who were not dating did not share a bed. "You don't have to. I'm fine. It was only a dream."
No, thought Thor. That wasn't what she was supposed to say. She was supposed to say yes, stay. He would have joined her in bed in a heartbeat, held her close until she felt safe again, whispered soft platitudes to her, kissed her fears away...
Of course, he could hardly say any of that. And she did seem to be fine. Maybe it was only he who was perturbed. Even thought he ached to be close, he accepted her answer with a nod. "All right. Well." He looked at the door and back to her. "If you should need me...you only have to call. My quarters are close, I will hear you."
Jane settled back down into her pillows and tried to shake the uneasy feeling the dream had left her with. "Thor..." No, she was in no danger. She could handle thins. "Thank you."
He gave her a small bow, his hand over his heart. "You are most welcome. I hope you are able to find solace in your slumber again."
