Who: Darcy and Thor What: Getting lunch When: Thursday afternoon (8/2) Rating/Warnings: Green
If asked at a later date what movie they'd watch, Thor would have to confess he was not aware. His conversation with Jane loomed heavy on him, which had caused the normally happy God of Thunder to be more like his morose little brother. He still smiled, made the odd joke, and for all intents and purposes acted the same, but someone that actually knew him would know there was something going on.
And Darcy was ever so perceptive.
It probably didn't help that the sunny day had suddenly developed rumbling clouds.
"I apologize," he said finally, his head spinning a little. "I know you said something but I do not recall. I am a poor lunch date, I am afraid."
Darcy was thrilled to spend time with Thor. Things with Loki were developing quickly. She saw Jane daily and so far despite life starting her crazy, it fit. It made sense. But even Darcy noticed from work, how the sunny day suddenly turned gloom like something was coming. More reason for her to go see Thor.
But he was out of it too.
"I asked what's wrong..." it was a curse. Being as perceptive as Darcy was. She noticed everything. Many thought she was dimwitted but that was far from true.
"What's going on, Thor..."
Thor had the decency to look a little ashamed. "Do not worry, Darcy. It is a problem of my own that I need to work though. I would not have my mood blight our outing. It would be selfish of me, especially after our excellent breakfast this morning." It was nice to sit and relax with Darcy. He'd really only known her through Jane or his brother, and although he'd always enjoyed her company, they'd had very few opportunities together.
Now, as Loki and she continued to grow closer, it was about time to change that. He would know more of her.
Making a concerted effort to feel better, the clouds started to dissipate. "See? Already the storm passes, and the sun shines her light upon us."
Darcy glanced up at the clouds and soon to Thor. Yeah, he and Loki were definitely brothers. They both tried to hide when something was wrong. That thought made her smile. "This morning was nice. And I texted your mom a while ago." She said with a smile.
Darcy knew how to change topics. "I asked if I could borrow some books, she said yes."
Still, she watched Thor closely.
"My mother had the grandest library in all of the nine realms," Thor said wistfully. "I used to spend many an afternoon traipsing through, disturbing the scholars." He gave a low chuckle. "Would it surprise you to learn I was never the most studious child? That was Loki, always with a book. I grew bored of anything without pictures, and soon was banished from the library."
Thor smiled. "I am glad you are speaking with my mother though. She is a wonderful woman who has much to teach. I continue to learn from her in different ways."
Darcy smiled a bit. "Yeah, I always liked learning stuff. And this will help me protect you guys. After I learn about Asgard, I wanna learn about where Drax and Nebula are from." In truth, Darcy had a lot of work ahead of her.
Diving right into work once arriving her was a good distraction. But now she had Loki and she still dived into work. Maybe she picked up some things from Jane after all.
It was hard to find a complimentary thing to say about the strange blue man. Thor decided to go with something vague and non-threatening. "Drax is an interesting character." He did not add how Peter compared the two of them, or where he had met the man. As amusing as that day was, Thor was in no rush to relive that. "I do not believe I have had the honor of meeting Nebula yet. I was thinking of hosting a barbeque tomorrow at the manor. There have been many new additions to our group, and it would be a splendid show of friendship to have a feast. What do you think? Steve felt I should ask you to help plan it, but I feel I am more than capable of doing so."
Darcy smiled and nodded her head. "That sounds like an awesome idea. Also, you wanna set it up, go for it." Says with a bright smile as she nipped at her food for the moment.
Darcy believed if this vs were going well then something bad was going to happen. So a bbq was the perfect distraction
At that, Thor finally gave a beaming smile. "Thank you, Darcy. I knew you would be supportive of my endeavor." He paused a little before joining her in eating, finally giving his poor sandwich the attention it deserved...only to ignore it a few minutes later. "Steve also feels I should extend a personal invitation to Jane rather than include her in the group invite. I do not wish to put her on the spot though. Do you have any thoughts on this matter for me?"
Darcy was chewing when he asked about what to do with Jane and the bbq. So she thought a moment. "You and Jane always kinda always tiptoed around each other. It was painful to watch." She said smiling.
"Ask her personally. How do you think me and Loki started getting close? I had to email the dork." She said smiling.
Thor shook his head. "the time would have to be perfect for it though, and with everything happening..." He trailed off. Did they really tiptoe around each other? He remembered the times spent in the London flat, carefree and easy. Everything was easier with Jane....but there was truth to it. It took several years before they decided to cement any type of relationship, and even that was selfish on his part. He could still vividly remember their final dinner when he realized how onerous it was to have any type of relationship.
Of course, things were different now. Wildly different.
"I would never wish her to feel uncomfortable or awkward. She would accept my offer perhaps out of a sense of duty."
Thor was clearly overthinking this.
Thinks for the moment. Darcy didn't know about London. By that time she was in New York. But she thought. "Jane is always gonna be awkward, it's why I love her." Says happily. "Just ask her Thor. It'll mean more if it's face to face also." She sipped her drink. "Also now might be good. Whatever you're keeping is weighing on you. So this will be a good distraction."
He nodded slowly, his attention returned to his meal. "I suppose.". Picking at it, he finished and gave a sharp nod. "Yes. I will invite her." He gestured to his phone and gave another bashful smile. "I have been messaging her today. I will extend the invite before I notify the others. This will make my heart happy."
Darcy was smiling at him. "See. You guys are doing good. Baby steps... Midgardian baby steps" is all she said as she smiled at Thor.
Really she was one to talk... especially after last night.
"Midgardian baby steps." He liked that. Especially when he thought about Asgardian courting rituals. For long-lived beings, what were several years of dancing around the subject? A tussle, well, that was a simple matter, but an actual relationship? Treaties were arranged in less time.
Thor returned the smile. Enough about him. "So will I look forward to breaking my fast with you on the morrow as well?"
Darcy opened her mouth to say something but lips pressed closed as she hid her smile... But failed miserably quickly after. "Yeah, since God of stealing covers(Loki) doesn't wake up until after eleven," she said laughing a bit.
A low rumble grew in Thor's chest as he started to laugh. God of stealing covers? He'd have to remember that for later. "Oh, Darcy. Your frankness and fresh perspective are sorely needed. As mentioned earlier today, I wake with the dawn and generally have spent the early hours exercising and putting my thoughts into order." He paused. "And sometimes, as my mother stated, I spend it eating cereal and watching television." He gave a shrug. "After centuries of doing what other people want, I enjoy having free time again."
Darcy smiled. "Hey, do you." Is all she said about that. "Just don't steal the covers." She said laughing. Oh, Loki was going to kill her. But it was a death shed take happily. Least she didn't mention the other thing. Which was their own personal joke?
His phone buzzed and he glanced over. With a smile, he read a message. "Jane says 'Hi Darce'". The highlight of his day was speaking to her. Looking back at Darcy, the same silly smile on his face, he realized that yet again, he lost track of what they were talking about. "Covers? Oh right -- my brother. God of stealing covers."
"Did you shower Jane?!" She said purposely to embarrass her best friend. But she laughed with Thor. "Dude he so steals the covers. It's horrible." She said laughing.
"I will not ask her about her bathing habits," Thor replied with a huff. "You have a phone, you can ask her yourself." He also did not want to go down the very dangerous path of thinking of Jane in the shower. No. Not going there. "And Loki always wants more than he should have. You will have to accustom yourself to this since it appears everything is back to the way it was before."
Can't help but laugh. "Stinker," she said playfully as she watched Thor. "We should do this more often. It's nice." She said nodding her head. "It's okay.. right? For me to like Loki as much as I do so soon..right?"
Thor looked at her curiously. "Of course." He leaned back and tapped his hand on the table lightly before shifting in his seat and sat forward suddenly. "We may be in various timelines, but you, Darcy, your essence remains the same. There is no difference in your soul, in your being than before. That Darcy found a way to love my brother, faults and all, and make him a better person. Those qualities still reside within you. You may think you are simply falling for him now but this was pre-ordained."
as she blinking rapidly? She felt like she was. "What do you mean preordained? Like, written int he stars? Fate type of thing?" She asked highly curious now.
"Everything is in the stars," Thor said solemnly. "True, we make our own decisions but we are guided by the hand of fate. Once, it was the Allfather who knew and could see everything. It is said he gave up his eye for that power." And if Thor had both his eyes, he would have rolled them right now. "I have not gained that power, unfortunately, so do not think of asking."
Darcy came to look at Thor for the moment. "Wait wait, Thor... Are you telling me, Loki and I are destined to be together?" She asked with a lifted brow, as she bites her bottom lip. Was it wrong for her to be hopeful about that? Should she? After all, a part of her felt like she was the just second choice because the original Darcy vanished.
"It is not my place to say," was his maddeningly vague response. Fate worked in mysterious ways.
"Oh come on! You can't say all that and then say that!" She said throwing her hands in her head at this point*
Thor grinned. "Of course I can, and I will." He motioned to the waiter for their bill and gave another smile. "It is not my place," he repeated. "I could be altering fate at this very moment by simply speaking of it."
Darcy did the ultimate eye and head roll at this point as she laughed."Yeah, yeah keep your secrets."She said snickering. "So.. Did you ask Jane tot he BBQ tomorrow?" She asked since Thor was texting Jane at the same time as lunch. She didn't mind.
Thor made a face but in good nature. "I enjoyed this conversation more when we were speaking of my brother. Oh, and remind me to send you a text picture of where the linens reside. In case you get cold in the middle of the eve."
"That would be great... Or I can kick him out the bed and just claim it mine" She said with a bright smile on her features as she watched him closely.
