Natasha tugged off her glasses as they stepped out of the elevator that had taken them down to the lower level and let the unconscious guard’s body drop to the floor, stepping over it and taking his key-card. Her fingertips were covered with a fine film that had replicated his and she led the way as she and Clint quickly moved down the short corridor. A swipe and a palm scan later, the large door was opening and letting them into the basement area. There were crates and the floor was wet as if the fire dampening system had been triggered more than once. Wooden crates and shipping containers made the whole area look like some kind of overly complicated video game level but it worked for the master assassin-turned-spy and the master-spy-and-world-class-archer. The information that they’d been sent told them there were nine men left, each one with a highly unusual and powerful weapon alongside their normal ones. Honestly, though, the intel wasn’t as reliable as Natasha normally would have liked considering it was second hand from the AI that was part of Spider-Man’s suit. She might not have actually spoken to Tony, but that last text message from him was as desperate as she’d ever seen. One day, she’d need to talk to him about this kid and just what was going on. Today, however, was not that day and it wasn’t the time. Tugging on Clint’s arm, the two moved in perfect unison to take cover. She threw a small drone up into the air and indicated for Clint to turn the display on that he had so that they could see what the state of play was. What they could tell, however, was that the nine that were left were treating this like some kind of sick game of tag, calling Spider-Man’s name out in pretty creepy ways and talking about just what they were going to do to him when they found him. Knowing that Spider-Man was a sixteen year old kid, Natasha flexed her fingers at her sides and tried to remember that Steve didn’t always want them killing people. As she met Clint’s eyes, though, she knew he felt the same way she did: if these people died… well, it was collateral damage. She wasn’t about to cry over the deaths of some people who were willing to kill a kid for kicks. Some things you didn’t forget and how to work together and move as one was one of those things. Clint much like Natasha stepped over the unconscious guard and went with the tugging of his arms before they were shrouded in cover. The display was soon opened and Clint focused his attention on what the drone was looping back to them. Collateral damage, unfortunate when it happened, but it happened. Clint was convinced the world would be a better place without these nine in it, especially as they got their kicks from taunting a teenager. Some people needed to get out more. “Pretty standard formation,” Nat muttered to Clint as they reviewed the footage, indicating with a tilt of her chin that they should be mindful of the one that was approaching them, lifting a hand to indicate that Clint could do what he wanted. “I got elevator guy, you can have him and then we’re four each for the takedown.” Find the kid, get out alive, make sure that Bruce was okay. Priorities. She smirked a little, moving low and swift away from the crate they had taken refuge behind to circle around the outside, intending on taking out her half of the room and leaving Clint to his. Stealth was key, they both knew that, because if they were busted too early and those weapons were turned on them? Well, no one would be walking out alive. She clicked her tongue down their comm to let him know she was okay and out of range before falling silent to do what she was good at. “You’re too good to me,” Clint shot back with a smirk before he closed up the display and reached for his bow. As the goon that was approaching them Clint turned the bow so the string was facing away from him before looping it up and over the guy’s head. He then pulled the goon towards him at which point he was trapped between string and arrow rest and with a distinctly well applied point of strength and pressure he quite effectively cut off the goon’s air supply. Once he felt the goon go slack Clint immediately disposed of the body under a nearby crate before he noted the click down the comm and echoed it to indicate that he’d heard her and was moving. There was a reason why he and Nat had been at the time two of the best agents that SHIELD had and why they worked on so many missions together. They moved as if they were one person and honestly he had no concerns over what Nat was doing because he knew just how capable she was. Getting through the goons was definitely not that hard: apparently those that can’t pick up guns to make themselves feel powerful. Some of them may or may not be breathing but Cap wasn’t here and it definitely wasn’t any kind of loss so Clint wasn’t losing any sleep over it. He did a further two clicks down the comm line to indicate that his work was done. Nat didn’t respond instantly as she dropped down from on top of some crates she’d climbed to get a better vantage, the pressure of her landing on his back and driving him to the floor snapping the guy’s neck as he landed. Pushing hair out of her face, she lifted the pistol from the third of her marks and shot the fourth in the head, a single bullet between the eyes. He dropped like a sack of potatoes. With the four that she had to deal with down and Clint’s confirmation that he was done, too, Nat lifted her voice. “Spider-Man?” she called, “We’re here to help you.” Peter didn’t actually respond for a long moment, partly because the thought of talking made his already throbbing side throb a lot more but also because if he spoke he’d need to detach from where he’d plastered himself to the underside of the truck and honestly he wasn’t entirely sure that would be possible. The drone was broadcasting a signal that looped the security cameras so their activities were undetected, but it had a finite life, and Natasha just sighed. “C’mon,” she called, a little more softly this time. “We gotta get out of here, Spider-Man. If we don’t, then more bad guys are gonna come through the doors and getting you out of here and to a hospital is gonna be much harder.” Having moved back into Clint’s eyeline, Nat opened her mouth to say something else when there was a soft thud from a nearby truck. Raising her weapon, Nat met Clint’s eyes as they moved towards it, only to holster it as soon as she saw a red-and-black covered foot sticking out from underneath it, right behind the wheel. “Hi guys,” Peter said, voice obviously strained as he pulled himself out from underneath the truck, his suit obviously damaged, webbing shot against his side blood-slick and dark. “Nice to meet you properly- uh- I mean- off the network- and not on opposite sides of a fight, I- ngh-” Natasha motioned for Clint to come closer as she crouched down beside Parker and checked out damage. There was a fair bit of blood pooled in that area and she reached into her belt and tossed down a coagulant with a formula that destroyed any evidence left behind, meaning even if they swabbed the blood they’d not get anything. Clint had divested one of the dead guys of his shirt and hoodie, they just needed to find him some trousers and shoes to get him to a hospital. Together, they hauled him up and Nat ignored how her stomach twisted as he groaned and hissed in pain. The easy part was over: get into the building, find the kid. Now the hard part began. |
