Who: Ned and OPEN
What: Hacking challenge gone wrong
When: Oct 1
Where: Spirit Halloween
Rating: low

Okay, so Ned would admit that maybe he shouldn't have done this at all. The thing was, the challenge looked like a lot of fun and it would give him a chance to work on one of his devices which was basically something that looked like a cellphone, but was actually a transmitter and would allow you to infiltrate other signals around it. What better way to test it out than in a real world situation, right? Plus it was supposed to be harmless.

What Ned didn't factor in was if the device died after you were already in control of other devices, there was no way to turn it off. So now Ned was looking in dismay as all of the animatronics were going off loud and frequent. It was mayhem.

A part of him wanted to run away, but he seemed glued there, unsure of what to do while the three teenage Spirit workers were trying their best to manually turn off things, but there was a lot of things to turn off.

Ned briefly had the thought of 'isn't there someone from history with that last name,' but he didn't have time to delve deep into that line of thought since she was offering and he would very much like to stop the chaos. Maybe if he'd been someone like Loki, he would sit back and enjoy it, but Ned was not like the god of mischief.

"It's there." He gestured to the center of the store. It was in the middle of the 'corn maze' that was a little set up for customers to go into and experience some of the scarier animatronics. It wasn't hard to find, though, since he left it on a haybale. "Thanks, by the way." Even though he had no idea what was about to happen.

"You're welcome," Illyana responded though, to be fair, she had no idea what was going to happen either - guess she'd find out, right? But then she was off, disappearing into the corn maze to find the transmitter. No one really noticed her, since the poor employees (they were just, you know, high school students or similar-aged - pimply-faced and awkward and trying to earn enough money for edibles or something) were scrambling to contain the calamity.

Her eyes flashed blue, neon electric glow, and there was a brief burst of magic in the same color - it shot from her fingertips and hit the transmitter, allowing it to crackle to life and awaken to a powered state. Then she wandered back to where the culprit was.

"All good now," she shared. "Though if you need me to just burn this store down and start over, let me know." Was that a joke too? Maybe. Maybe not.

Ned's eyes widened as if, just maybe, he thought she were being entirely serious. "Uh, no, it's should be okay?"

He opened the program and could see the transmitter again on his end which was the first good sign. For all that chaos, all it took were three key strokes and all of the chaos instantly went still. Even if there was still 'the monster mash' playing over the PA system, the store felt eerily silent now.

Ned exhaled and then looked back at Illyana. "Thanks. I owe you one."

Illyana shrugged, as if it was no big deal - honestly, using this bit of magic and stopping the Halloween store from blowing up had been the most exciting thing to happen in awhile. Especially since appearing in San Francisco, the chess board pieces moved around - she was always looking for something to pep up her days, in between her side gig as the very best Uber Eats delivery person (it was easy enough to continue that gig here - speedy food delivery was everywhere) and her studies at the Sanctum.

"Ice cream?" she hedged, since she thought that sounded like a good re-payment. "Yes, I will take an ice cream date."

Even quasi-demons such as herself loved ice cream. Who didn't? No one with a soul, that's who.

"And if you need me to give you a lift back to anyplace, let me know. I can teleport us."

Ned blinked at the word 'date' and then he told himself it was a saying and not actually a 'date'. There was no need to overthink that. Which meant after the momentary pause-and-blink, Ned recovered with a smile. "Ice cream it is! There's this place I saw on Instagram that looks really cool. We can go there if you like whenever you want."

The teleporting thing was something Ned wanted to do. Sure, he had down it a few times with Doctor Strange, but any excuse to do it again was welcomed. "Yeah? I wouldn't mind a life back to the Tower, if you're heading that way?" Did people 'head that way' when teleporting? Oh well, he had already said it.

She giggled a bit, a far sweeter sound than her appearance would suggest. No, her appearance suggested she liked setting fire to things and watching them burn - there was always kind of a spark of mischief in her eye. "I live there, so I am heading that way," Illyana agreed. "Come on. It's not exactly something I can do in the middle of a store."

She went outside with new ice cream date Ned, stopping in the alleyway between the Spirit Halloween store and the laundromat nearby. A shockwave of that electric blue shade gathered in her eyes, a bright cerulean storm, when she said the magic words - sum in limbo omnipotence.

The portal opened up, an other-dimensional doorway. "Right through here."

Yep. Magic was still super cool. Ned probably looked like someone who was watching a cool Cirque De Soleil show when she did what she was capable. "So cool."

He managed to get a grip of himself and nodded. "Right. And, thanks again." Just in case something went wrong with the magic and he ended up half at the tower and half her or something.

Not to worry, nothing would go wrong. Illyana had done this plenty of times - there were other aspects of her magic that she was still practicing, but teleportation was one thing she knew well; this portal would lead right to the Tower lobby, by the Starbucks. "You are welcome - looking forward to the Instagram place," she smiled, accent caressing her words. "Message me if you want."

She was only a hop, skip, and a jump away on the Stark network - and the Tower was very large but it would be nice to have someone else she knew there. Besides the cats.

Who she should probably check on now, come to think of it.

((and fade here works!))
