Who: Madripoor team, led by Sam
What: Intel gathering in Low Town for supersoldier serum.
When: OPEN
Notes/Warnings: Hybrid (summary or classic threading ok). Bloodshed possible! Rolls until ~fin~

A place like Madripoor only came alive at night. On one side, the skyscrapers in High Town were outlined by a bevy of dancing neon lights. Below that, on the other, Low Town was marked by flat one or two-story buildings as far as the eye could see. Rain-slick streets and railways were crisscrossed by too many power lines, businesses located by shining candy-colored signs. Steam rose from rooftops, the lights below casting each puff in a vast array of colors, evaporating into the darkness and drizzle overhead.

This was a place of street gangs and black markets. In the midnight markets, it was easy to find or trade whatever one desired. All it took to get in was a lot of money and the right contacts. Crates and lockboxes came in and left under the watchful eyes of armed guards. But these weren't the only goods being bought and sold. Information was a popular commodity too.

The best sort of information was found inside The Brass Monkey Saloon, one of the two most infamous bars in Madripoor.

The bar wasn't hopping. It was filled with shady individuals standing around making dubious deals over strong drinks, that just happened to have some music playing in the background.

The trio had the benefit of knowing how things played out in that other universe, and could use that as an in to see Selby. This time they had more backup and an escape route, as well as a safe house.

"Not so bad this time," Zemo muttered. Showing up with the Winter Soldier was always helpful, and name dropping and an ass kicking worked to get them inside of Selby's lair. Thankfully, they hadn't been checked for the small Wakandan tech buds behind their ears, which everyone could listen in on.

Selby was lounging on a tacky couch, the reigning queen of this sketchy bar scene. After they were led past piles of drugs, money, and guns, she didn't bother to stand up. This was her realm and she was sitting pretty in it.

"You should know, Baron, people don't just come into my bar making demands."

"Not a demand," Zemo said, not bothering to sit down this time. Looking over at Sam and Bucky with a slight smirk, he added, "An offer. Before that, I'd like to introduce you to my good friends, Smiling Tiger and the Winter Soldier."

Sam had argued about the stupid code name and lost. It wasn't all that important in the grand scheme of things, as long as they got the information they needed. Hopefully things here would be at least a little similar to what happened in the other universe to give them an advantage.

When Zemo introduced them, he gave a quick nod, keeping his expression neutral. He knew he was the least intimidating member of this group and was content to hang back and let Zemo and Bucky do the heavy lifting.

It wasn't so bad this time, or it didn't feel that way. Even with their exit strategy and other assorted friends coming along it didn't mean much. Things could still go sideways. Of course, the whole time he kept quiet and let himself survey the room. Old habits died hard sometimes.

Even with being introduced, he doesn't exactly give a nod, though that doesn't mean those eyes don't turn toward Selby. An acknowledgment even without words. After all, there was no need for words when it came to the Winter Soldier.

There's a part of him that notes where Sam's at and at the same time sticking close to Zemo, more for the illusion than wanting to be anywhere near him.

They had a name. They could remember that from the other universe they came from. In this universe, there was no guarantee the serum creator was in the same place as before. What they needed most was a location.

"Dear Selby. Rumors of my past crusade have traveled far," Zemo said, gesturing with his hands, keeping them in the open so the guards and Selby could see he was no threat. A greater threat was standing beside him. Having Bucky there meant the guards were on edge, thinking their guns would protect them. "I've heard of a name of a super-serum creator. Nagel. What I need is where I can find him."

"You were right to come to me, Baron. But mucking about with the Power Broker is going to cost you," replied Selby, looking at Sam and Bucky with an appraising eye. "What's your offer?"

"If you tell us the location, you will get him," Zemo said, patting both hands on Bucky's shoulders. At least he didn't do that chin tweak again. "Along with the words to control him."

Selby looked delighted. It would put her on the Power Broker's radar. But having the Winter Soldier meant the Power Broker could be eliminated, and she had a shot at taking her place.

"All right," Selby said, standing up. "I'll give you the bakery since you already know the baker. Buccaneer Bay. Last I heard, he's on a tugboat called Xie Xie. Near port three."

Zemo turned and looked over at Sam with a smirk like they had what they needed.

That had gone much better than Sam was expecting. Instead of relaxing, it put him more on guard. Things never went this well.

He nodded in response to Zemo, glad that they'd obtained the location, and wondering if they would be able to avoid the Power Broker. If they could get in and out without calling much attention to themselves...

... which was when his phone rang and he groaned. Of course he'd forgotten to put it on silent. He fumbled with it, intending to ignore the call, but Selby spoke up. "Answer it. On speaker."

Fuck. Sam closed his eyes, hoping that whoever it was wouldn't greet him by name.

"Mr. Wilson? This is Arnold Flickinger from the Bank of New Orleans..." the man began. So much for that. Sam hung up, but Selby had clearly heard him being addressed by a different name than Zemo used to introduce him.

He shoved his phone back in his pocket and said, "Let's go," to Bucky and Zemo.

It was easy for her to see that Zemo was trying not to wince outright. Wilson was a different name than the Smiling Tiger that she remembered.

"Shoot them," she said, and as the guards trained their guns on the trio, a bullet broke the glass of the window and went right through the middle of Selby's chest. She dropped down to the floor and several guns were cocked and aimed at them. It was a matter of seconds before bullets started flying.

Of course, Sam's phone would go off at the most inopportune time. Last time, however, it had been his sister. This time? It was a bank. Some of the things were different and some were exactly the same, in a way.

"GO!"

If anything, Bucky could give them a bit of time to head out. Or, at the very least, start that way. Besides, he'd been aching for a bit of a fight ever since Zemo touched him. It might not have been the whole chin thing, but he's not exactly a man who really likes to be touched.

Much less by a man like Zemo.

Zemo was just a man. He possessed no superpowers, nothing like Bucky Barnes. Still, he was a smart man, and he knew when to get out. Bucky didn't need to tell him twice.

"Nearly perfect, Sam," Zemo said with infuriating calm, dodging a bullet that had clearly been meant for his head in the knick of time. Another shot through the window and that man dropped his gun, clutching onto his wounded hand. He muttered the words "guardian angel" and immediately ran down the narrow corridor, snatching a handgun off a side table. He stared down the guard at the door as he stalked toward them, pulling the trigger before they had time to react. The guard hit the floor with a thud and didn't move. Like it was a minor annoyance, Zemo kicked the body out of the way and threw open the door for them to escape.

In that other universe, Zemo told them to drop the guns and follow his lead. Not so here. He called back to the pair, "Keep the guns this time!"

They hadn't gotten far through the bar before the bitcoin hitjob lit up everyone's phones. This time, he was under no such compulsion to try to be casual. Zemo shot anyone who tried to get in their way or was drawing a gun. Luckily they had some help in the form of Pete and Kitty, who seemed to startle enough people on the main floor to clear them a path outside.

It wasn't long before the trio were out on the street. Several phone screens lit up around them. Guns were alredy being drawn, and whatever guards were still alive were hot on their heels. As were almost all of the bar patrons.

Upstairs in the bar area, the crowd hadn't thinned after the ruckus caused by the first team. In fact, it left everyone on edge knowing the Winter Soldier was in the vicinity. A broken table was cleaned up and replaced so quickly, that it was safe to assume that this was a common occurrence. Someone was already mopping up some blood, and no one around them cared.

Pete had pulled Kitty aside into a nook during the fight, and then chided himself from doing so. She could ghost herself out of any situation. Even if a chair got thrown, it would fly through her and hit him instead. Good for her, bad for him. Better for any of the trio downstairs that needed to get ghosted through a wall if things went pear-shaped.

He was a strong proponent of looking natural, and he seemed to somehow blend in with all of the shady sorts around them. One hand was kept on Kitty's back at all times, to make sure that no one bothered her. It gave off a strong vibe that she was spoken for.

"That went well," Pete told her, considering hitting up the bar for a drink. Not to down it, but to take two sips and make it look like they were there on business. "Now we need to act natural while they have their chit chat."

This whole thing was beyond nerve-wracking and Kitty was doing her best to portray calm, cool, and collected so that she didn't either blow the mission or embarrass herself in front of Pete. If he thought she was ready for this, then she should believe in herself.

Having his hand on her back helped a lot more than she cared to admit.

"What is considered natural in a place like this?" she asked. She'd never been much of a bar goer in the first place and definitely not seedy places like this.

Pete looked around and the patrons looked a rung below rough. It wasn't the seed, it was the dirt it was planted in. What was worse, was Kitty was getting a lot of looks, and none of them were good.

Pete considered their next move. "I mean, we should probably look more like a couple without looking awkward about it. If we want to be really convincing, we could do this..."

He put an arm around her waist instead, pulling her in close against him. He could use that drink, a way to chase away any worries that Kitty didn't want to be cuddling up to an assassin. She was a nice girl, after all, and shouldn't have ever been anywhere near the likes of him.

Kitty was aware of the looks and they made her uncomfortable. She was sticking as close to Pete as possible until they were out of here. With any luck, his presence would keep anyone else from approaching her.

When he pulled her in closer, she sucked in a breath. Look like a couple? Okay, she could do that. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw two rough looking men who appeared to be heading in their direction, so in a moment of panic and instinct, she shoved Pete against the wall behind him and went up on her toes so she could kiss him.

It didn't register what Kitty was doing until their lips collided. Still in "act natural" mode, he resisted doing a hands up motion and went along with it instead, kissing her in return as his hands rested on her waist like they always belonged there.

He kept telling himself it was part of the job. That's why she did it.

They're only acting natural. A fact that he didn't mind at all.

When she felt Pete's hands on her waist, Kitty wrapped her arms around his neck. So they'd look more natural. That was the only reason. The fact that she'd thought about what it would be like to do this more times than she cared to admit had nothing to do with it. This was their cover and they had to blend in.

She wondered exactly how long they needed to stick around here before meeting the others at the rendezvous point. Part of her hoped they didn't have to leave soon.

Pete was too busy "acting natural" with Kitty to notice the start of a scuffle, as the first wave of armed guards came upstairs. Only when there was the telltale sound of someone letting the safety off, did he creak open one eye and murmur against Kitty's lips. "Looks like trouble, luv. We might have to leg it."

He eyed the distance from the back rooms to the door and filled her in, "All right. We provide cover for them to get out of Selby's lair and to the front door. Three to your right, one to your left. More behind the bar. Bullets start flying, you ghost. Don't worry about me."

This would get sticky fast. If they could make it outside, they'd all make it to the relative safety of some Black Widow cover fire.

"Everybody out!" one thug bellowed, and fired off a warning shot. "Now!"

There was a moment of sheer confusion and disappointment when Pete pulled back before Kitty remembered that they were on a mission and this was just their cover. She blinked twice, as if trying to rid herself of the memory of their kiss, and nodded at his instructions.

"Got it," she said, her entire body tense and ready for whatever she needed to do to protect the others and herself. Though if Pete thought she was leaving without him, he was crazy.

Things did get sticky for a few moments and, if it wasn't for Kitty's ability to go intangible, she would have taken at least one bullet, but they finally made it outside and were able to take cover behind a car. She looked over at Pete with a relieved smile. "That went well."

Pete wasn't used to being dragged out of the line of fire. Sure, he took a bullet before. And he threw up a shield of heat - enough to stop bullets - as they made their way outside.

Now behind a car, Pete stared at her while looking amused and a little perplexed.

"We were supposed to help them get out of the...oh, there they are," he said as the trio came out of the club. "And Zemo."

At the sight of Zemo, Pete looked like he was given the choice of drinking battery acid or eating a bowl of broken glass. He muttered an unenthused, "...hurrah."

All around them, phones started to light up and make notification sounds.

"Hit's been put out. We best scamper. If you have to save someone by ghosting, do it. You hear a gun popping off, ghost. I can handle myself. Hot hands, remember?"

Hot hands that had just been on her, of course.

He nodded in the direction of their retreat route, glad that the Widows were overhead providing cover fire. As Sam, Bucky, and Zemo headed off in that direction, he grabbed her hand and started to tail them too.

Across the street on the nearby Princess Bar, was where Team Three were on point, keeping a watchful eye out for anything going on and ready to provide cover fire if things went poorly. In Madripoor, things often went poorly.

The steady drizzle of earlier had tapered off, leaving the rooftops slick and no signs of drying any time soon on such a humid night. It wouldn't be easy to traverse, unless someone happened to be a super agile assassin.

At the moment, Yelena was in that place where adrenaline and patience churned with one another in her gut, though she ignored it and kept her breath and movements slow and steady. This was really no different than any other previous op or mission she'd been on, except this time she called the shots for herself. There was no Dreykov whispering in her ear or controlling her movements should she step out of line.

No, the woman who was several feet away from her was much more intimidating than Dreykov could have ever hoped to be, and it made Yelena very self-conscious of each of her own movements. Though she'd never tell Natasha what she was feeling, she was still careful to do everything by-the-book, so to speak...at least until things went sideways.

Peering through a scope, Yelena kept her eyes on the movements of team one through the windows - while they were in view, at least - as well as the people around them while seeking out any possible threat. When she heard Zemo introduce Sam and Bucky to the contact, she gave a faint snort. Her voice was soft, but her Russian accent was far more evident than her sister's - not that she couldn't be rid of it if she needed, there just wasn't much of a point in this type of mission.

"Smiling Tiger? Who comes up with these code names?"

It'd been a while since Natasha had been on an op like this. It almost felt like going back to basics but she had more at stake than she'd ever had in the past. Her sister was right next to her and in on the action. It was a heady feeling mixed in with adrenaline pumping entirely too fast.

Her voice was dry. "Probably not Sam. I have a pretty good feeling he fought and lost on that one." She wasn't sure if Bucky had gone along with it or simply also lost at whatever posturing game Zemo had instigated.

She shifted her grip slightly, pressing the scope tighter as she tracked Selby more than Team One.

"I was going to say, he does not appear to be smiling right now," she replied just as dryly as she continued watching. When Sam's phone rang, she rolled her eyes a little, and shifted her grip. When the woman's order rang out, her own scope swept towards the guards, and she heard the shot that took out the person in charge.

"That didn't come from us," she murmured, and fired her own shot at a guard who was lining a shot up on Zemo's head. Her aim was true, and the man went down with a hole in the middle of his hand, the gun falling away.

"Was someone else invited to this party?"

Phones lit up everywhere in the immediate area. Whoever fired the shot seemed to put out a hitjob on the trio. And yet no one was coming out of any buildings nearby. Whoever it was vanished without a trace.

Everyone on the streets turned and looked at the trio who had just left the Brass Monkey, walking down the street at a brisk pace. Mopeds started rolling in, armed gangs answering the call and the prospect of some easy money.

Every gun was drawn, and a woman guarding another bar readied her assault rifle, ready to mow them all down. If anyone was caught in the crossfire? It would suck to be them.

"Aww, it seems so and they don't even have the right manners to introduce themselves after crashing."

There were too many people and phones that they couldn't take them all out. There'd be too much collateral damage and who knows what doing that would do to destabilize the area. She spotted someone about to throw a knife at the trio's backs and fired a shot through their forearm before they could launch. The woman went down with a scream.

Natasha frowned at the mopeds. They had plenty of rounds to take them out but it'd be pure chaos once they started taking out the tires.

"This is entirely too messy."

"So very rude." She helped her sister in covering team one's exit from the building, then tilted her head as she studied the street below them. Any minute now, someone would realize that a few of the shots had come from outside the building and start searching, which mean that they wouldn't have long to cover their people while they headed down the street.

"When has messy ever been a problem? But I would suggest we think about leaving ourselves very soon." She'd let Natasha make the call, but Yelena was more than prepared to disassemble the sniper rifle she held in her hands when needed. As she waited for her sis to decide, Yelena, pulled out her phone and scrolled through her own contacts, sending a message to one of the former widows she'd known in their own universe who'd taken up residence in Madripoor, because outside back-up couldn't hurt. When the reply came seconds later, she frowned, but put her phone away again.

That was a problem to look into when they didn't have a couple dozen armed gangsters less than a hundred yards away from their position.

Those gangsters were closing in fast, and more were showing up by the second, converging by the Brass Monkey. It was one part vigil and two parts armed massacre waiting to happen.

As people were converging on that point and trying to get a description of their marks, one looked up at the rooftop of the Princess Bar. Either they thought it was competition from a rival or a gang war threat, they shouldered their rifle and started firing.

Everyone else, thinking that the mark had been spotted, turned and began firing at the rooftops too.

Where Low Town met High Town, there was an unmarked finish line of sorts. An extraction point where if the teams made it to that location, they were guaranteed reinforcements and cover fire. High Town was a place where money bought more safety and prestige. No one from Low Town would dare mess with a wealthy man who was out on a night stroll with some of the Dora Milaje in tow.

The goal was to make it to this place, as fast as possible, once the information was learned. From there, their retreat would be covered. And once they were in the safehouse, they could plan their next move.

Everything was going so well.

Or. Actually, there were some issues - but that was to be expected. When you involved creatures like Baron Zemo (and, by the way, the Dora Milaje communicated with glares and icy daggers in the depths of sharp, dark eyes that they would rather impale themselves than continue to allow the likes of him to wear Wakandan tech, even something as simple as an earpiece) and slippery Lowtown (literally slippery in some places) there were bound to be hangups.

Nothing they all couldn't handle, however. T'Challa was in place with his bodyguards, casing the streets between Lowtown and Hightown - the War Dog safehouse was past the Hightown border, and he remained there in between to intercept in case any scuffle found its way to them here; he and the Dora would ensure Sam's team got to the safehouse without further incident.

"Hold steady and keep watch," he murmured, adjusting his own earpiece - he was linked to the team and his own Panther habit as well, fully prepared in case it was necessary.

Everything was going well until Shelby was killed again, and the hit was placed on them. Having backup this time was good, although as they fought and dodged their way toward the extraction point, Zemo considered that some things were different in this universe.

A few desperate hitmen followed as they approached the rendezvous point where T'Challa and the Dora Milaje waited. Not looking back, Zemo took a moment to note, "Agent Carter didn't arrive and offer to help, as she did last time."

Perhaps she was dead in this timeline. Or maybe because they had cover-fire, she didn't need to intervene.

Once they were within sight of the rendezvous point, there was a spray of bullets meant to send them scrambling for cover. It would keep them from crossing that unmarked boundary between Low Town's payday or High Town's safe haven.

A heavily armed gang of ten had managed to trail them, and they set their sights on the Dora Milaje and their King, not realizing who they were about to tangle with.

Sam was more concerned about Bucky than Zemo as they escaped the club and tried to make their way to the rendezvous point. Sure, Zemo had actually proven to be marginally useful, but if they had to sacrifice him to keep themselves safe, well, he wouldn't lose any sleep over it. "It's okay," he said in response to Zemo's comment about Sharon. "We've got a couple widows and other backup this time." Which hadn't kept him from being a complete idiot and putting his phone on silent again.

It would be easier if he had his suit though.

Tapping the earpiece he was wearing, he outlined a strategy for all of them to get past the gang that was attempting to block their exit from Low Town. "Wisdom, Pryde, make some commotion to the east to get their attention. Widows, that'll give you an opening on the west side to slip through. Leave behind a little present that'll give Pete and Kitty some cover." He knew they had some sort of fancy devices that would explode on a delay.

"Buck, we'll let the Dora take care of our covering our exit."

Cause a commotion? Okay, Kitty could do that. It was the opposite of being stealthy. Her powers weren't exactly offensive though, so it took her a moment to figure out what to do. She slipped into the front seat of the car she'd taken cover behind and fiddled around with the wires under the dash a little. As soon as she got it started, she slipped back out.

"Pete, hit this spot with one of your knives," she said, pointing to the spot she wanted him to aim for. When he did, the car exploded in a huge fireball. Luckily, she was able to phase out so that she didn't get burned.

"Oh, nag on the abrasive Englishman, why don't you," Pete grumbled, although he did take a few seconds to appreciate Kitty's everything ingenuity.

As the car exploded, he made his way to the Dora Milaje along with the rest of the retreating team.

It took out half of their attackers, but not all of them. There were still five more firing assault rifles as the teams made a run for it, spreading themselves out to strategic positions so they weren't near one another. Familiar with the area and urban warfare, it would now be much harder to take them out in one shot. Knowledge of their home turf helped them, enabling them to follow the retreat. And one of them was calling in for backup.

As they followed, they finally got into the range of T'Challa and the Dora Milaje.

So it seemed that their friends were leading the fight right to them - which was just fine. T'Challa had a mental link with his Panther habit, and he called upon it quickly - it changed the look and shape of his clothing, morphing into the protective suit weaved with vibranium. "Go," he told the Dora Milaje, and he jumped right into the fray with them - meeting the attackers head-on.

It would not be a difficult fight, despite how dark it was. The King's personal security team, in a flash of vibranium spears, ninja boots, beadwork and tassels, knocked assault rifles out of hands and sent bodies flying to and fro - they didn't kill, but those thugs would likely wake up with severe headaches and regrets about their choices.

Meanwhile, T'Challa - with a grace smooth as freshly-poured cream - leapt from the shadows and handled one himself, from behind. A vibranium Iklwa dagger appeared out of nowhere and while he wasn't about to go for the kill shot either, the shoulder made for a nice meaty spot for a stab wound.

T'Challa's blade sunk in. The man screamed, paralyzed in pain as he dropped his gun with a clatter onto the ground. "Who...why?!"

Four thugs were flying, and the King's lady warriors were poetry in motion. Dangerous, fearless poetry which left several thugs sprawled on the ground with only a few shots fired. One of the gang members said into his smartwatch, "...don't come here" before he passed out, facedown on the asphalt. A handful of daring hitmen and women showed up, and promptly got their asses kicked, too. Shots fired went harmlessly ricocheting, bullets harmlessly fired into brick walls and through windows.

Soon enough, no one dared come into this alleyway that led into High Town. No matter how much the price of the bounty was.
