Even though Steve wasn't around to celebrate, Darcy planned a big 4th of July bash for all the residents of the Tower. It was a private event this year, not open to the public like years past, because she figured they would all appreciate that more. Of course, there was staff around, but at least folks could enjoy themselves without worrying about paparazzi or sycophants.

There was a fully catered barbecue along with beverages and desserts. And after sundown, they would have a great view of several local fireworks displays.

That blue could only be described as vibrant. That was quite the entrance his young protégé made, and even he had to laugh a little, shaking his head. Illyana was no shrinking violet, that was for sure.

"It is. Like all good chemical products should be," he assured her, with just an undercurrent of sarcasm. Not at her, but at the ridiculousness of putting Blue Dye number whatever into a popsicle, in excess.

"Enjoying the holiday so far?" She certainly looked ready for a summer party, which a lot of people would say he sorely needed. The truth was, Illyana needed it more if she spent time in Limbo as a means of escape.

"Good," Illyana decided, continuing to suck back that freezer pop. It had to be eaten by squeezing and pushing at the ice - though it also melted quickly, and was almost done. She had a black hole appetite sometimes and even if this was merely sweetened, artificially colored water she'd still eat the entire thing. "It is - a very interesting party. So festive. So much freedom."

Or something - whatever they were supposed to be celebrating here. She had a lot of questions - most of them involved why put the flag on everything? "At first I was not certain why the country pretends like this land is not stolen, but it seems as if that is done for every holiday." Like Thanksgiving too - focus on the made up tales, ignore the truths.

"You look pleasant," she added, fingers pressing in the last bit of slender plastic tube. "So crisp."

"It is. It was Steve Roger's birthday too." It felt different not having him here, but things changed. He knew for a fact that nostalgia could be a dangerous thing, and there was no going back to bring back people you lost along the way. The Time Stone would be too much of a temptation for some people, but Stephen wasn't one of them. To him, it was another layer of responsibility.

She wasn't wrong though. Stephen was enough of a cynic about those sorts of things. Or a lot of things.

"Times are changing," he said, reaching over for the lemonade. "You look nice too. Making friends?"

If she was anything like he was...a raging introverted workaholic...that would be a no.

Hm, right, yes. Birthday boy - how exciting. Bleeding red, white, and blue - or just red, probably. Illyana decided she wanted lemonade too - so she squinted, a flash of concentration in dark eyes, the look of a shark. Her hands were held palm up, waiting for the lemonade to appear - she aimed to conjure it - and then on a crackle of electric blue mystical energy it did.

It was purple, however. The color of a prickly pear - which made sense she guessed, because she too was prickly.

Oh, well. She drank it anyway because it was refreshing even if it didn't match Dr. Strange's lemonade exactly. "Who would want to be my friend?" she replied, an amused rhetorical question, velvety accent and all. "I'm a demon." Well, Remy had been nice to her - she appreciated that. Though she wasn't sure if she'd play Monopoly again anytime soon.

Definitely red. They all bled red. Unless it was an alien, and then that cornucopia of blood types was filled with infinite possibilities.

He watched as she summoned the lemonade, wincing slightly at the color but also curious about what that tasted like.

"You're not a demon, Illyana. You have an affinity with demons, but that doesn't make you one," Stephen pointed out. "I'm not the life of the party either, and that's fine. If the world was full of Tony Starks, we'd be the lucky ones who know how to cast silence shrouds."

Oh. A silence shroud - that sounded tempting. Sometimes it was just so noisy in a menagerie of people, noisy as a hundred rattlesnakes - though Illyana probably would prefer the rattlesnakes to people, if she were being honest. "You will have to teach me that one," she said, knocking back her fresh-squeezed prickly pear lemonade - not all of it though, because she offered the cup to Doctor Strange if he wanted to test the results of her magical experimentation.

And she didn't have cooties or anything. It was perfectly safe.

"When can I come over again?" she asked then, and she supposed that actually asking was polite instead of showing up or simply teleporting over. But she definitely wished to be at the Sanctum frequently - she wanted to be around its guardian.

No cooties. Always a good thing.

He took the cup and tasted what she conjured, finding it sweet but tart, a pleasant aftertaste of the prickly pear lingering on his tongue. It wasn't a combination he ever imagined would work, yet it did. It was as complex as the young woman before him.

He handed the drink back to as he said, "I'll be somewhere else tomorrow. But if you want to teleport in around ten a.m. on Tuesday, I can teach you that spell."

Dark eyes lit up like stars. Tuesday wasn't so far away - Illyana could wait until then. "I will teleport in," she nodded, finishing off her lemonade - though her irises flashed blue and she refilled it automatically, with the liquid being blood red this time (the flavor was cranberry, probably, because apparently she just couldn't conjure a normal drink) so did she look like a vampire feasting upon crimson life force from a plastic cup?

Definitely. It was a good look for her.

She'd also probably need to eat something too, in order to offset the sugar she'd imbibed so far during these celebrations - maybe she'd grab another hot dog. "Will you watch the fireworks with me?" was her next question, looking up hopefully through sooty lashes.

There was a crooked smirk on Stephen's face at the blood red drink. She was learning swiftly, and she was adept at whatever she did. The red suited her, a young woman who thought she was a demon. It wasn't like she was trying to fight that image either. She embraced it, tinkered with it, probably questioned it...

It wasn't a bad thing. He did the same things too. It was probably part of wielding magic. Insatiable curiosity and imagination.

"Yes. Because I'm casting some spells to make them. Want to learn?" he asked, his smirk turning into a smile.

Casting spells to make fireworks sounded fun (maybe it was just the part about burning things. Fire. Loud crackles and colorful shapes in the sky). There was something about her grin and hooded eyes right then that suggested she loved to watch the world burn anyway.

"I would like to make fireworks with you," Illyana decided, smoothing her dress (so white, so pristine - prowling the party with liquid grace and beauty, searching for things to devour, as one did). "Are they silent fireworks? Some people do not like the loud noises."

She was not one of those people. Things that were bombastic were just fine for her.

He noticed that daydream gleam in her eyes and did a double take. She might burn the world down, but he doubted she was going to do that with firework spells. They were sparks and bedazzlement, but not as explosive as the real thing. It was safe to show her that, but maybe keep her away from anything else that could be highly combustible. At least for now.

"We can make them silent," he replied, "but I think people expect the noise. This way is better. Less air pollution too."

He took the time to explain the spell casting in great detail, hoping it didn't result in any broken windows or calls in to the NYFD.
