Who: Darcy Lewis & Wanda Maximoff
What: Chatting about things
Where: Wanda's apartment
When: Shortly before Vision's arrival
Warnings: WandaVision spoilers
Status: complete
The dreams had been near constant for the past couple of months and Darcy was starting to think she might never get a decent night sleep again. Most of them were mundane, with her deciding to go back to school to study astrophysics, but then Thanos happened and half the world disappeared and things got more difficult. The worry and stress of those years was wearing on her, even though she knew thanks to the others who had been displaced to this timeline that they would return. Of course, she also knew what the cost of that was and even though logically she knew this Tony was going to be fine, the idea that any Tony was going to be hurt was painful, especially since the her in that timeline had no idea about their true relationship.
Then, all of a sudden, the dreams changed and became far more intense, with her getting recruited for a mission with SWORD, a mission that was bizarre as hell. She’d been tempted to talk to Wanda, to find out if the other woman had also gained these memories, but she wanted to wait to see how they played out before she did that.
When she finally hit a week dream-free, Darcy figured that she was done for the moment and that she could approach Wanda. Part of her wondered if there was any danger of her doing something similar here, or even if she was somehow responsible for this whole alternate timeline, but that didn’t seem likely, especially now that Vision was here.
She knocked on Wanda’s door and waited for her to respond.
***
Wanda hadn’t expected visitors today, and was a little surprised when the knock came. A quick mental check told her who it was and she hesitated, then opened her small pocket dimension and desposted the papers and charms she’d been studying. After it disappeared, Wanda glanced around once to make sure nothing was out of place, then got to her feet and walked over to the door.
Opening the door, she gave Darcy a smile, though there was a puzzled look in her eyes. “Darcy, this is unexpected. Please come in,” she told her as she stepped back to let her in.
***
“Hey, hope I’m not interrupting anything,” Darcy said as she stepped inside. Maybe she should have sent a message first, but part of her felt like this was a conversation that needed to happen in person and without giving Wanda warning.
She glanced around, noticing a few personal touches here and there even though the apartment looked nearly identical to her own. “I’ve been having some dreams for a while and I wanted to talk to you about them.”
If Wanda also had them, then she would probably know where this was heading.
***
Darcy had mentioned having dreams before, but that had been before things solidified for Wanda, and she’d hoped in a way that they had stopped since. Apparently that hadn’t been the case, and she shut the door quietly before turning to face her.
“Alright,” she replied, then gestured to the living room. “Do you want anything to drink?”
***
She went to take a seat and glanced over at Wanda’s kitchen. “Some tea, if it’s not too much trouble,” she said when she spotted the kettle. “I’m guessing you know what dreams I’m talking about.”
Her tone was gentle and non-accusatory. Yes, the whole thing had been a mess, but Darcy knew that Wanda hadn’t done it maliciously and she didn’t expect anything like that to happen here.
***
“Of course not,” she replied in reference to the tea as she made her way over to the kitchen to pour two mugs. After adding a small pitcher of cream and a bowl of sugar to a tray, she brought it all to the living room and set it down, rather proud of herself for not bobbing the tray at Darcy’s words.
“I believe I do,” Wanda said at last as she added sugar to her own tea, then picked it up as she sat in a chair. “You’re talking about Westview?”
***
“Thanks,” Darcy said, picking up the other mug and wrapping her hands around it as she waited for Wanda to settle into her seat. “Yes, I was at Westview. I’m not sure if you saw me.” From what she could tell in the dreams, she’d only been inside the hex briefly and it was when things were kind of unraveling, so it was entirely possible that Wanda hadn’t realized.
She took a sip of her tea before continuing. “I helped Vision.” Well, the one that Wanda had created. That whole thing still hurt her head to try and figure out.
“Are you okay?” she asked. “I mean, it sucked that you couldn’t keep him and the kids.” Especially the kids. They were cute.
***
“Briefly.” She’d known, peripherally, that Darcy had been caught by the expansion of the Hex, and she’d seen the way she kept Hayward from escaping, which she appreciated. She didn’t know that Darcy had helped Vis. At the question and the words that came after, Wanda set her cup down softly.
‘It sucked’ sounded too weak a condemnation for that loss, and it rankled a little, but she didn’t think that Darcy meant it maliciously. Instead, she just shook her head. “Most days. Having Pietro helps, and...the more time that passes, the more it eases, just a little.” But she couldn’t forget the sound of her sons’ voices crying out for help.
“Are you?”
***
It was definitely an understatement and Darcy was aware of that, she just lacked the words that would adequately describe the situation, so she was glad that Wanda didn’t take offense.
“Oh, I’m fine,” she said. “I wish things could have been different, that’s all.” Whole situation was beyond fucked and she wouldn’t have minded seeing what creative ways Wanda had to torment Hayward for his bullshit.
Mostly, her purpose for dropping by was to let Wanda know that she was here to offer support. “At least you have the real Pietro here.”
***
“So do I,” she replied. But that wasn’t the case. The words Vision had spoken to her in the memory Agatha had forced her to relive still rang in her head, “What is grief, if not love enduring?” and there were some days that they and her brother’s comforting presence were all that got her out of bed. She smiled at what Darcy said next.
“It’s a miracle that still doesn’t make sense, but I’m glad he’s here, too. I like having him here.” It was just too bad he’d never met - and likely never would meet - Billy and Tommy.
***
Darcy sipped her tea and then smiled at Wanda over her mug. “To be fair, not much about this whole fractured universe thing makes sense, so why not time travel?” It wasn’t exactly the weirdest thing they had going on here.
“I’m glad that he’s here,” she said. “Family is important. It was wild when I found out that Tony was my biological father, but I’m glad I did and have the opportunity to know him.”
***
Wanda tilted her head at that curiously, a little startled as she studied Darcy. “He is? I didn’t realize that was serious when you called him your dad in passing...I had no idea you were actually related.”
Reaching out to pick up her tea again, she took a long sip, adjusting to that in her mind.
***
“Oh, yeah, Bruce was running some tests about a year and a half ago,” Darcy said. “And realized that we were related. “My parents were hippies, so it honestly didn’t surprise me all that much to find out my mom screwed around. It probably wasn’t even behind my dad’s back.” She shrugged. Her parents hadn’t really been super involved anyway so it hadn’t been a huge emotional blow or anything.
It made sense that Wanda wouldn’t have known though. They didn’t really talk about it a lot since it still wasn’t public knowledge outside of the Tower. “He put out a press release about a year ago that there was a previously unknown Stark heir, but so far, we’ve managed to keep my identity under wraps.” Hence the whole speculation that she was his new girlfriend or something when they went to dinner on Valentine’s Day. Ugh.
***
Glad that she’d managed to steer the conversation away from herself and Westview, Wanda shook her head in amused wonder. “Well - congratulations?” If Darcy was a Stark heir, then she would likely be looking at a very different life going forward. “It must be nice to find family you didn’t know you had.”
Though she herself had little experience with the press, she could imagine it would be hard to keep that kind of thing private from the public.
***
The subject change didn’t go unnoticed though Darcy was willing to let it drop. She’d mostly wanted to make Wanda aware that she (a) knew and (b) was here as a source of support. If she didn’t want to talk about it, that was fine.
“Thanks, it has definitely been an adjustment,” she said. “But we have a lot in common so I guess we’re a data point on the nature side versus the nurture side.”
***
“Really? What do you and Tony have in common?” She asked curiously as she studied Darcy. They were similar in coloring and humor, but otherwise she honestly hadn’t spent much time with either to tell her a whole lot.
Which was something else she should probably be doing, at least to keep track of what others were doing and what they thought.
***
Darcy laughed. “Mostly our sense of humor,” she said. “Though when I started having the dreams about getting my PhD, he insisted that was influenced by his smarts.” They had very similar attitudes and approaches towards life though, things that were more difficult to explain because they were subtle.
“We should really hang out more,” she said.
***
“I’m sure that was far more you than him,” Wanda said. Darcy was a very intelligent woman, from what she’d seen, and she seemed to understand more as well. It had been Darcy who’d figured out much of what she’d done in Westview with a certain directness that she didn’t think Tony could do.
“We should,” she agreed before smiling a little. “I’d like that.”
***
“Great,” Darcy said as she finished her tea and stood. “I don’t want to take up anymore of your time. But if you need anything, you know where to find me.”
She hoped that Wanda would trust her and open up to her if needed though she could understand why the other woman might hesitate to do so.
***
Wanda set her cup down and stood as well to walk her back to the door. “I do. Thank you, Darcy,” she told her. “I appreciate you coming by.”
With that, she opened the door for her, then closed it again after the other woman left and let out a slow sigh.
