Who: Carol Danvers and Sam Wilson
What: Valentine’s Date
Where: The Tower and then Rezdora
When: Sunday, February 14th
Warnings: violence
Status: complete

Sam may not be the most romantic guy on the planet and he and Carol were far from a traditional couple when it came to romance, but that didn’t stop him from making reservations at one of the better restaurants in New York City on Valentine’s Day so they could enjoy a nice meal together. Things had been oddly quiet on the hero front lately, though he hated to even think that for fear that it would manifest something extra villainous.

Wearing a tux, Sam had arranged a car to take them from the Tower to the restaurant, and he ducked out of their shared apartment while Carol was in the bedroom finishing getting ready so he could knock on the door and pick her up like a proper date. Darcy had let him stash a bouquet in her apartment so he could surprise her.

If he wasn’t the most romantic guy, then she definitely was not the most romantic girl. Carol barely remembered it was Valentine’s Day before having an actual boyfriend. However going out to dinner with her guy was one of the things that she always looked forward to. It meant that they could get out of the apartment and do something different than just order take-out for the millionth time. And the fact that it allowed her to get all fancy was really nice too.

Carol spent quite the time getting ready, wearing a pretty banging dress full of sparklies and hot low-cut cleavage. What? She never got to dress this way. As she was finishing up, there was a knock on the door. Gee, wonder who it was. Opening the door, she let out a whistle.

“Hey there hot stuff. You here to pick me up?”

Seeing her in that dress made Sam lose his ability to speak for a moment. Cause damn. “I certainly am,” he said. “Though I’m not sure I want to take you out looking like that. I might have to fight off too many drooling fanboys.” Cause, again. Damn.

He leaned in to kiss her cheek and handed her the flowers he was holding. “You look amazing. And I’m very much looking forward to a nice dinner out.” It wasn’t something they did often, mostly because they were kind of lazy, and he really thought they ought to correct that.

The look on his face was definitely enough for her to be pleased and maybe a little smug. “If anyone can fight them off, it’s you, my love.” She took the flowers and smiled warmly. “Thank you. I’m looking forward to it too. Something nice and romantic.” Carol leaned over and kissed him gently, trying not to get carried away before they even left the building.

Once he offered her his arm, she slipped hers through and headed out with him. “Just think about how fun it’s going to be when you get me home to take this off.” She wiggled her eyebrows at him. Apparently getting dressed up made her a bit of a tease.

Oh, Sam was definitely thinking about getting her out of that dress. He was pretty sure most men and a lot of women would share those thoughts. Still, they had reservations and he was looking forward to a good meal. Not to mention he could use the extra fuel for the night.

“What kind of boy do you think I am?” he teased back. Some men might be intimidated to have a girlfriend who could physically best them. Sam, on the other hand, found it incredibly hot and liked to play at being helpless to resist her.

It was flattering to know that her boyfriend still wanted to check her out. Everyone else was something she could do without, as long as he was the one who looked at her that way. She grinned at him full on. “I think you’re the kind of boy that’s going to take me home tonight so that we can have a lot of fun Valentine’s Day sex?” she offered, still grinning.

She was always glad that he wasn’t intimidated by her. Carol wanted someone who could be comfortable with her, and she’d found that in Sam. Once down to the lobby, they got in the car and headed off towards dinner. “I could eat a horse. Not literally of course.”

“I am definitely willing to be that kind of boy if that’s what you want,” Sam said, leaning over to kiss her cheek. He didn’t want to do more than that or else he’d drag her right back up to their place and say screw the reservations.

Once they were in the car, he chuckled at her comment. “That’s good, because I’m pretty sure horse isn’t on the menu. Lots of pasta though so I can carbo-load for all that sex you want later.”

Carol wiggled her eyebrows at him a bit and beamed when he kissed her. “That’s exactly what kind of boy that I want.” It would be a wonderful Valentine’s Day. She totally understood about not wanting to get carried away. It would be easy to with him. Of course if they did just say screw it and go back to actually… then that would have been okay with her too.

“Oh pasta’s good. If you can’t have horse, have pasta. That’s what I always say.” That’s what no one said, Carol. Your jokes are terrible. Carol was enjoying it though. As they drove to dinner, she kept gazing over at him with a happy look on her face. She really did adore him. “So you know, I’ve been thinking maybe we should have chocolate for dessert.. Though the kind that’s back at home.”

Sam thought her jokes were pretty funny and he chuckled. “Oh yeah?” he asked, giving her an interested look when she suggested dessert at home. “I think that could be arranged. I certainly have no objections.” It was nice that things had been relatively calm and they could spend a lot of time together without interruptions to save the world.

Grateful that he’d arranged for a driver, he scooted closer and bent his head to nuzzle her neck, figuring that they may as well make out like teenagers in the backseat until they arrived at the restaurant.

Carol gave a short laugh, “Yeah. Always. It’s my motto.” About pasta. She was glad that he found her ridiculousness adorable. “Oh good because I might have bought some things and left them in the fridge.” She was really looking forward to that part, truth be told. She always liked when they could have time for just the two of them.

She leaned in, ignoring the driver’s possibly dirty looks and leaned in so that she could kiss him properly. There was definitely nothing wrong with making out in the back of an uber, and having lots of PDA. Maybe the guy was even taking pictures, but she didn’t really care. She was too caught up in making out.

It felt like they arrived at the restaurant all too soon and Sam was a little awkward when he got out of the car, making sure to tip the guy very well, and discretely adjusted himself before offering Carol his arm so they could head inside. He was hoping that everyone would be so focused on their own dates that they wouldn’t really notice when two Avengers walked into the restaurant. The fact that he and Carol weren’t as well known as some of the others should help with that.

He kept an arm around her waist as they waited for the hostess to show them to their table, though they didn’t have to wait too long. Once they were seated and had their menus, he nudged her foot with his under the table. “I was thinking we could do the tasting menu,” he said.

By the time they got out of the car, her hair was a bit mussed and so was her lipstick at the very least. Maybe she’d have to head to the bathroom in a bit to fix it all. She took his arm after he paid for the car. This was just one of those things that they would have to be used to, she supposed. It was still a little weird to be recognized, but honestly all of her attention was on him and their make out session so it hardly mattered.

She followed over to the table, and sat down. Gazing over the menu, she finally lifted her eyes to look back at him with a smirk. She nudged his foot in return, sliding up his calf. “That sounds perfect. I’m definitely thinking about tasting something.” She wasn’t sure what had gotten into her except that she was just happy to be out with her boyfriend.

“Why, Captain Danvers, you are in rare form this evening,” Sam said, clearly amused by it and definitely not complaining about it. “I need to take you out to fancy dinners more if this is the kind of reaction you have.” Not like they really had the time for it. In fact, he was half expecting some emergency alert on their phones to interrupt them before dessert.

The tasting menu meant they didn’t have to make any other choices and that was a good thing in his book. Their lives were filled with too many choices so a nice, quiet evening out was exactly what they needed and deserved.

Carol grinned, clearly pleased with herself. She was feeling feisty, but he tended to do that to her when they got to go out. “I do enjoy it, that’s true.” She really did like having time out with him. It was such a rare occasion that she had to make the most out of her time with him. She was definitely waiting for a meteor to fall from the sky though, but maybe they would get extremely lucky.

Having less to think about was always a plus in her book. She was looking forward to all of the good stuff they were going to try. “So.. how are you feeling about all the new people that are showing up that we.. don’t really know. It’s um..” well she was trying to be nice about it. “It’s.. different. I don’t know how I feel. I mean, I know that they don’t have any say being here along with the rest of us but still..” She shrugged.

Sam nodded with understanding. “They’ve had a rough go of it,” he said. And their experiences were very different from the ones the Avengers had gone through, though they all had their fair share of tragedy in the past. He was going to update her on his progress with setting up groups for the folks who escaped from Genosha until the clatter of dishes falling to the ground distracted him and instantly had him on alert. It wasn’t that unusual to hear in a restaurant, especially when it was so busy, but it wasn’t that easy to overcome your instincts.

Eyes darting around the room to identify the source, Sam inhaled sharply. So much for their quiet night out. Despite being too far away to hear the details, the presence of two men dressed in all black carrying rifles was never a good sign. “Should we?” he asked Carol.

“Yeah, they have.” Though she was still giving some of them the side eye. At least with the others, she knew them. She trusted them. These were entirely new people and who knew if she could really trust them all? They were here to stay though, she knew. Better to try and get along. The sound of things breaking though caught her attention and she glanced over to see what the hell was going on. Maybe someone just dropped some stuff on the ground. It happened, right?

Carol frowned slightly, as the men with the guns entered the premises and then she let out a sigh. “Oh dammit. It’s Valentine’s Day! What the hell is wrong with people?” She didn’t want to let these assholes ruin their day. “Yeah.. let’s kick these guys asses and make them regret ruining people’s holiday.”

She got up from the table and started stalking over towards the men quickly.

Of course Carol didn’t even wait for him to scramble to his feet and follow. She was halfway across the restaurant by the time he got up, wishing that he had his suit. Maybe he needed to get Tony to make him a cool version that could hide in a wristlet or something like he had with the Iron Man suit.

By the time he caught up with his girlfriend, the men with the guns were sneering at her. “This doesn’t concern you, blondie. Go away.”

Sam cringed when he heard the patronizing tone. This wasn’t going to end well.

If she got this new dress ruined, she was going to be soooo mad. That wasn’t going to stop her from breaking her foot off in this guy’s ass though. Hearing their patronizing tone only served to make Carol more angry. “Oh you are going to wish that you’d never said that.”

Her eyes flashed a bright yellow and she surged forward, reaching to grab the guy who had talked back to her and snatch his gun out of his hands. Other shots fired, all at her but she didn’t feel them. She used his limp body to throw it at one of the other guys.

Then she waved them forward like ‘bring it on’

Since Sam wasn’t bulletproof, he stayed out of the range of the bullets, though he didn’t hesitate to grab one of the guys who was pointing a gun at his girl in a chokehold that would render him unconscious and wouldn’t actually cause long term harm. It wasn’t that he doubted Carol’s capability to handle them all, he just didn’t want to stand around feeling useless.

Her display had them all so focused on her, that none of them noticed him, which made it easier for him to grab another guy and disable him as well, an amused smirk playing on his lips.

That was more than okay with her, she would draw their attention and then he could come up behind them and take care of them. Men were kind of dumb that way. Well except for Sam of course. One by one, they all kind of attacked her. Realizing that their guns were inefficient, they started trying to punch her, but that didn’t do much at all. One by one, and along with Sam’s help, she started taking them all out.

Then they all kind of piled on her and she had to take several of them and crash their heads together and try to get out from out the pile of people. One by one, she isolated them so that Sam could come up from behind until every one was down on the ground.

When the last guy hit the ground, Sam gave Carol a grin. “Damn, woman. You did all that without getting a speck of blood on that gorgeous dress,” he said. The kitchen staff came out of hiding and the manager burst forth with effusive thanks, insisting that their meal would be on the house.

Sam shrugged at the thanks. “It’s what we do,” he said. “I assume the cops are on the way to collect them. If so, we’ll go back to our meal.”

Glancing down at her dress, she did notice that there was no blood on it at all. Carol even did a little twirl. “I am really good,” she said with a grin. She turned back towards the manager and nodded her head. “No problem. I’m just happy to help. If any of them get back up, I’ll put them back to sleep.”

Reaching over, she took a hold of Sam’s hand and lead the way back to the table so that they could go back to eating. “We make a pretty good team, you know.”

Sam grinned. “That we do,” he said. “Though I am sorry our dinner was interrupted.” At least it was garden variety human thugs and not megalomaniac aliens or supervillains. A minor blip in their evening plans, but not enough to derail them completely.

When they got back to their table, he gestured for the waiter to bring them another bottle of champagne. “Happy Valentine’s Day.”

“Me too, but there’s no one I’d rather be interrupted with more than you,” Carol replied, beaming at him. It was going to be a very good night for the rest of their date, she was going to make sure of it. No more fighting, only lots and lots of love.

“Happy Valentine’s Day, baby.” She leaned over and kissed him gently. “I love you.”
