Who: Kitty Pryde and OPEN
What: Kitty is preparing for the sabbath
Where: Common Area Kitchen
When: Friday, March 5th - afternoon
Warnings: tbd but unlikely
Status: OPEN

Kitty was finally starting to settle into a routine here. Her life still looked very different than it had a year ago, but it wasn’t so bad. She felt like she was starting to get a better handle on her powers, hadn’t accidentally fallen through the floor or phased out of her clothes in weeks, and training to fight was going better than she’d expected.

It also helped that she’d finally been able to get enrolled in some classes at Columbia. They were online, since she still wasn’t comfortable being that far away from the Tower for long periods of time on her own, but it still offered a sense of normalcy that she’d been missing. Having finished her coursework for the week, she headed up to the shared kitchen so she could prepare some dishes for the sabbath. She liked being able to spread out in here instead of using the tiny kitchen in her apartment. Plus she was making an effort to be more social.

Her 22nd birthday had passed with little fanfare a couple of weeks ago, reminding her that it was almost the one year anniversary of her initial kidnapping. That was something she preferred not to think about thanks to the overwhelming anxiety it caused, making her worry that she'd end up captive again. Instead, she chose to focus her thoughts on the few friends she had made here, like Raven and Remy. And Pete.

She had the radio tuned to a station that was doing a Flashback Friday and featuring songs from the 80s and 90s, so she was dancing a little while she cooked.

Until the wee hours of the morning, Pete had been up to his eyeballs in S.H.I.E.L.D. intel and a bottle of liquor. He was trying to fill in any blanks with what MI-13 knew. By the time he looked up the sun was rising and the print of Degas ballerinas Kitty gave him started look like they really were dancing. A brief pass out and a shower made him feel almost new again.

He knew he should try being social too, but he failed miserably at it. He was the human equivalent of a rusty cheese grater in social situations, and he figured no one would miss him if he kept his nose to the grindstone.

Still, he thought about Kitty pretty often. Asking Friday where she was, he eventually walked into the kitchen wearing the basic rumpled spook suit, minus the jacket.

There was a nod of approval at the music before he sat down across from where she was cooking and dancing. It was pretty secluded in the apartments, even if they had their own kitchens. She must be feeling as cooped up as he was by the looks of it.

"What're you making, Pryde?"

Cheeks flushing pink when Pete caught her dancing in the kitchen, Kitty took a moment to clear her throat before answering his question. "There's challah in the oven," she said. "Right now I'm preparing gefilte fish. Then I think I'm going to make a brisket, but I haven't decided yet." The other option was to roast a chicken.

She glanced over at him, hoping that her cheeks were no longer pink. "What are you up to?"

If catching her off guard made her blush like that, he'd have to pop out into the commons more often.

He quickly pushed that thought aside. She wouldn't be blushing because it was him. After all, she was still young and he had a license to kill that he used way too many times to count.

"You can never go wrong with cooked cow," he said, tapping the filter end of an unlit cigarette against the countertop as he watched her. "Giving my body a break from cirrhosis and emphysema. Other than that, filling in some blanks for Shield. Do me a favor, luv, and fill in the blank on what challah is."

"Then brisket it is," Kitty said. "Assuming that means you'll join me." She knew that he didn't share her faith and that was fine. It was still nice to have someone to share the shabbat meal with. Plus she just enjoyed Pete's company.

She chuckled at his question. "Challah is bread. Have you never been to a Jewish deli?" They were on every street corner in New York City it seemed.

"Too right I'll join in," he agreed. He was as anti-religious as ever, but he didn't make it a habit to poke at others about their faith. There were so many other things to be a sarcastic ass about anyway.

As for the deli, he shrugged and admitted, "If I did, I didn't notice. My room's full up with Chinese takeaway boxes."

Some of them half eaten. Look. He's not a clean freak. As evidenced by the overhead Alexa knockoff mentioning that she detected 'fumes' and that 'cleaning ladies are available.'

Kitty smiled. "Good, I'm glad," she said. She told herself that she'd have been happy to have anyone join her and that it wasn't anything about Pete in particular. They had a stronger bond because of escaping together, that was all.

"You should let me cook for you more," she said. "You're going to end up giving yourself a heart attack from all that sodium and fat."

He smirked sarcastically, which is a state of being that he absolutely lived for. So much so, that his heart pumped sarcasm along with cholesterol through hardened arteries.

"You won't find me poking at a salad, unless I've stabbed my eyes out with a fork and I'm patting around for a napkin to mop up the blood."

He paused, thinking it over though. Spending more time with her was never an awful prospect, which was more than he could say for 95% of humanity at large.

"I'm not going to say no, if you'd like to. My table manners are shite though."

Which she probably knew all about anyway, after he devoured that protein paste gruel in Genosha.

The only reaction Kitty had to any of that was to laugh. She was well aware of Pete's lack of table manners and also knew his feelings on vegetables, not that she would stop trying to get him to eat them. "No salads, I know," she said. "But there are plenty of delicious ways to prepare vegetables."

And she wanted to keep him alive. Because she felt safe when he was around. That was the only reason.
