Who: Frank Castle + Karen Page
What: Frank would like an explanation that doesn't involve magic and time rifts, plz.
When: Late morning, 24th February, Central Park
Rating/Warnings: TBD

Frank remained by the tree where he'd found himself, phone clutched in one hand, the other running restlessly over his head every few seconds. In front of him people were skating, all moving in the same direction like a slow whirlpool on the ice.

He missed his coffee.

His phone buzzed periodically, answers from Karen to his series of increasingly desperate questions. None of them were what he wanted to hear. None of them helped him. He'd be happier thinking he'd taken a severe blow to the head and was in some kind of coma, and he was floating in this weird imagination land.

But Frank had seen the news, he'd read the papers, he couldn't ignore that there was a whole lot of strange shit even in the reality he'd come from. How could he? It had just managed to keep out his way until now.

Karen was here, though. And she was okay. That was important. She tied him to his sanity more than he would like to admit. She just needed to get to where he was, and then everything would be fine.

"Jesus, Karen," Matt sighed heavily, pinching the bridge of his nose as he tried to process everything she was saying. "We just get on with life? Are you kidding me? What about-" everything they'd left behind. Where had they left it? He winced harder at the mention of other planets, people coming from them, being somewhere around him-

"I dunno. I dunno how long it was since I saw you last. I dunno. I- shit, so much happened, Karen. After I left you so much happened." Now might not be the right time to share that, but she'd have to know at some point. "So was everything- was all your stuff in your apartment? I need to check my places."

Frank remembered, then, that she said he'd been there before. Not him, but him. "But I didn't do that before-" he said slowly. "I came to live with you. Did I go check my stuff? Did I- did we do anything?" Okay, that question was more heavily laced than he intended for it to be, but he'd take anything, any clue as to what he'd done before and why.

Karen was trying not to think about why this version of events was different from the last. It wasn't totally different. Maybe this Frank just came from a slightly different place than the last one. Or something. "I.. don't have an easy answer for that. Apparently it's not something they can fix. We're stuck until time decides to fix itself. No one can actually do anything about it, as far as I know." She didn't like it any more than he did.

She tried to remember what he had said the last time. "When we talked before, you said that you were in the clear. That you had.. finished it. You didn't really go into detail and I didn't ask. I mean.. if you want to talk, I'm here, but you don't have to tell me anything." Right. His places. He had only seemed interested in his van the last time, but she thought he might have had extra places to stash his things when things got rough.

"You thought it was best if we stuck together, when things were weird and people were coming back from... the dead. Matt's alive, by the way." She didn't know if he had seen that but yeah. She didn't even know how to begin to deal with that, so she was trying to ignore it and hoped that it would go away. His last question nearly made her choke, only because of the way he'd said it. Well.

Karen cleared her throat, and looked down at the ground. "You went to check on your things. They were all where you left them. But that was after you came home with me. And before you just kind of up and left without word." She wasn't sure how much to tell him though, not because she didn't have the words but because there wasn't a whole lot to tell. "As much as I might have liked to, you were a perfect gentleman, on my couch. You held my hand. We got dinner. We watched television and did.. normal things. Until a couple of days ago, when I woke up and you were just gone. Like you hadn't been there at all. And now you're here."

It wasn't exactly the answer he wanted to hear, but Frank also knew it was the only answer she could give him. He pursed his lips and nodded his head, sighing softly before fixing his gaze more solidly on Karen.

"Yeah," he replied. "Yeah, that's- that's still true. I'll tell you about it soon. I think you'll be pleased," Frank added with a half-smile. Another nod, it was good to know he had the same kind of priorities in every reality. People were coming back to life, people he might have killed...

"Matt? Who the-?" the name rang a bell. Someone the both of them knew- "My lawyer? Well-" Frank shrugged. Lawyer didn't feel that much of a worthy title for the guy, he'd barely been there through any of Frank's trial. He'd seen a note about it the paper, he remembered. Matt Murdock. "-that's good. For you. You two, uh-" well, no, maybe not, not if other him and Karen had...held hands.

"I am a gentleman," he replied, another small smile twitching at the corner of his lips. "Listen, Karen... maybe we can- maybe- we can try that again? If you like?"

It could have been way worse. Time could have been really weird and dinosaurs could have shown up. She'd said that the last time, but this time she thought she might not, otherwise she feared he might fall over. It was kind of amusing to find the one thing that got Frank Castle all flustered, and apparently that was magic and time travel. Go figure.

Huh. He hadn't wanted to really tell her about it before, but she was glad he was opening up a bit more. She smiled back. "I look forward to hearing as much as you want to tell me." Anything that actually made him happy, she was in favor of. He'd been through so much that she couldn't help just wanting him to be okay, even if it was just for a short time. Karen was clearly trying to glass over the fact that people were coming back to life. It made her more nervous than it should have.

Karen nodded. Right. Did he know about Matt being Daredevil? God, she couldn't even remember. "Yeah. He died.. I mean.. well he didn't die, but apparently he decided it was a good idea not to tell anyone he was alive." So that was a thing. "Oh! Uh.. we're not. We haven't been together for a long time. I thought you knew that. No, he.. wanted to get back with his ex-girlfriend and I'm not one to stand in the way of .. love or whatever." Man this was awkward. "And now I'm just royally mad that he was pretending to be dead."

Jerk.

She looked up at him, a little surprised look on her face. "Uh.. yeah. I mean.. I'd like that." She held out her hand.

“Faked his own death, huh?” Frank asked, amused. “Least I know you have a type-“ that came out before he meant it to, and he had the decency to look a little mortified at his comment. “I just mean- people. That you know. Heh-“ he ducked his head in a rare moment of embarrassment, then cleared his throat and pressed on.

At least he’d already faced Karen’s annoyance at his own disappearing act, they didn’t have to go through that in addition to all this chat about magic and shit.

He looked at the hand she was offering, that he’d all but asked for, hadn’t he, and hesitated only a second before reaching out to take it in his own. He couldn’t - wouldn’t - promise anything, he couldn’t trust that something wouldn’t come along and crap all over everything he held dear, as it was so prone to doing, but for now it could be good.

“Your place?” Frank asked gently. “Lead the way.”

Karen opened her mouth, slightly agape and stared at him. "I.. hey!" she said before she started to laugh, blushing quite a bit and shaking her head. Like he wasn't actually completely correct in that assumption. Damn him. "I mean.. I.. maybe. I might.. have a type." Hmph.

The only real difference was that Frank had always been completely honest with her. Too honest. And they viewed things the same way. They both dealt with things the same way. Just his a tad more violent. Okay, a lot more violent but that wasn't to say that she didn't have her own violent tendencies.

She smiled, trying to not further her embarrassment any more. She wasn't asking him to promise anything. There was always going to be horrible crap happening, they both knew that. For now though, this was just fine with her.

"Sure. Are you hungry? I actually have food in my house this time. I mean mostly because we went shopping and you were going to cook, but I could cook. Maybe." It was probably better if he did it though.

This was going to take some getting used to. Frank knew that already, but he was pretty adaptable. Worried, sure, that all of the people he'd killed in the past weren't going to stay dead- because that was a lot of people to worry about - but he'd cross that bridge when he came to it. He did need to go and check on his van, on the other places he'd hidden stuff, just to be prepared. He didn't have a gun on him-

"We should stop talking about past me like that, it kinda makes me feel like I'm dead or crazy," Frank said as they walked slowly through the park. "You still got your gun? Or a gun?" he added, knowing he'd feel a hell of a lot better if they had at least one weapon between them. "And, uh- the guy with the horns? He around?"

That's what she was worried about too, but then he didn't really know the extent of how many people she might or might not have killed. He wouldn't be surprised, but she hadn't actually told him. If they showed up, then maybe she would worry about it more. She nodded her head, "That's the last time I'm going to bring it up, promise." She didn't want to talk about what he had or hadn't done. He was back and here now and that was what mattered.

She didn't want to think about him dead or crazy. Not again. Karen patted her bag a little bit. "Yeah. I still have it. I always have it." She wasn't going to be around New York without it. "Daredevil? Yeah. He's ... back around." Even though he'd just gone missing with the whole Matt thing being dead. Of course not a lot of people knew Matt, everyone knew who Daredevil was. She was glad she didn't have some secret identity.

"Do you need to talk to him? I.. might be able to put in a word."

Frank nodded his head in acknowledgement. At least they had something until he got his stuff back. If he could get his stuff back. Otherwise that was going to be a whole new issue. “I’m gonna teach you how to shoot properly. With some heavier stuff,” he said, voice quiet as they walked, trying not to look too suspicious of everyone and everything around them.

“Daredevil, yeah,” Frank snorted out a laugh. “Yeah, I kept expecting to see him around. He was on my ass constantly. Last I saw him he was fighting...ninjas. Or something-“ he frowned. Because ninjas. “Nah, it’s fine. I just kinda- kinda hoped he was around still. I wasn’t worried about him,” he added quickly. “But y’know-“

It was more than likely wherever he had hidden it. This world seemed weird, but her apartment was there, so his stuff probably was too. "Heavier stuff? I.. wouldn't mind other things other than shooting. I mean in case I have the gun taken away or .. whatever." She barely knew how to throw a punch, though she knew how to shoot a guy in the chest several times. That had to count for something. Her voice was low too, not wanting to cause a disturbance.

For some reason, she had thought that Frank had figured out about Matt and Daredevil even before she had. She wanted to tell him, but it wasn't really her place. "Yeah. Ninjas seem to always be around that guy. It's weird. He's not even Asian, I don't think." Like that Danny Rand kid. She didn't get him either. "Uh huh. Sure you weren't." She smirked a little. "If I see him, I'm going to tell him you missed him."

Well maybe. She didn't know if she was talking to Matt at the moment.

"Oh, you want me to teach you how to go hand to hand?" Frank asked, raising his eyebrows. "Because I'm not gonna do that. Or maybe I should-" he said, changing his mind. "Maybe we should go to the gym, set you up on a bag-" That didn't sound like a terrible idea, actually.

"Really? There's more ninjas? I really need to-" he paused, swinging their hands gently as they walked. Frank huffed out a laugh, rolling his eyes. "Yeah, I'm sure you will. I'm sure he's missed me, too," he replied. "I need to catch up. What else do I need to know? Fill me in on everything- who's this guy, this wizard?" the word tasted bad in his mouth. "And- has anyone said anything about...why us? Or what we're supposed to do that isn't just 'go on with your lives'?"

She was just about to protest when he changed his mind. "Yes, you should. I'm not always going to have my gun around and you said it yourself. I'm always pissing people off. It's best I know how to defend myself even when I don't have a weapon." Of course she was always going to shoot first, if she could. But still she needed to know how to defend herself when that wasn't an available option. "I don't want to learn from anyone else but you." Because he would teach her how to keep herself safe for real. Not some blanketed down version that they thought she should know.

She nodded her head, a little wide eyed and then shrugged her shoulders. "I really don't get it either." Ninjas. Who would have figured. "The wizard guy is Dr. Strange. He's not all that bad. He's more tolerable than Tony Stark, I can guarantee you that. But it's still weird. He's still magic and has a weird cape that I think is alive? It's super weird. But at least he's not a condescending asshole." That was for sure. Hm.. What else to tell him? "This is just a guess. He didn't say why us.. but from what I've gathered from anyone who has an access to our channel, it's because everyone is tied to.. in various ways.. to vigilante superhero-ism. And villainry. There's.. apparently a really bad guy.. do you know Jessica Jones? Because you should. You guys would get along great."

They would just punch and shoot people to their hearts content.

"I mean, you could just stop pissing people off?" Frank suggested, though he knew that that wasn't going to happen. Karen had a drive- she had to go rummaging around, where she either wasn't welcome or was likely to get herself shot at. It would be endearing if it wasn't one more thing he really had to worry about.

"Okay, you got a gym you go to? Or at least something we can punch?" he asked. "I'll teach you. Maybe get Daredevil to teach you some ninja moves, too. He packs a good punch for someone so short." They were the same height. It didn't matter.

"Oh geez," Frank sighed as Karen expanded on Dr. Strange. And his cape. "Great. Excellent. I'm really looking forward to whatever this turns up. So what am I in this? Villain?" That was the last thing he needed so that was probably exactly where this was going to go. "I ain't no superhero, that's for sure."

He lifted his shoulders in a shrug at the name. "Nope, never heard of her. Why, you gonna set me up?" Frank joked gently, shaking his head. "Guess there's a lot of people I gotta meet."

Karen glared at him and then nudged him with her elbow. "Jerk. You know that it's not always my fault!" Sure she pissed people off, but that didn't mean she shouldn't know how to defend herself. It was like he wanted her to get shot or kidnapped or something. Good grief. She was not stopping her glare either, it was permanently fixed on her face. "Shouldn't I know how to do this stuff regardless? I mean I'm just as likely to be shot by hanging around you than anything else." Hmph.

She nodded her head, the glare fading just slightly. "Yeah. I.." she sighed a bit and looked over at him. "What? Daredevil?" Oh that's right. He wasn't here when Matt just outed himself. "Okay first of all, I'm not training with Daredevil. Second.. you missed it but.. you should really talk to him about it because it's not my place but you should know since it's not really a secret any more.. Matt is Daredevil. Blind Lawyer Matt, my ex? That's Daredevil."

And hence she wasn't talking to him. Yet.

"You're not a villain, don't even talk like that. You can not be a hero and still not be a villain either." God knew she was in that boat. Not a great person and not a terrible person. Still a murderer though.

It would serve him right if she put the two of them in a room together and then maybe Jessica could punch him, see how he liked it. "I'm not setting you up with her."

Frank thought it best to not get any deeper into that conversation. Karen had her ways, and not everyone agreed with them. And he worried. That was all. So of course he was going to help her. "Hey now, you know I'd take a bullet for you," he added, giving her hand a squeeze as they walked. "But we'll go to a gym. I'll show you how to punch. Get you throwin' me over your shoulder in no time-"

His head whipped around so fast it hurt when Karen decided now, now of all times, to drop some facts and revelations on him. "Wait-" Frank stopped suddenly, pulling Karen to a halt as well. "Wait, what? What? How?" Of all the things in the world- He took in a breath, every interaction he'd had with both of them flashing through his mind, dredged up for analysis. But- what? "That doesn't-" magic existed. He'd traveled through time and space. "Jesus, Karen, this is too much."

He could barely process anything else, despite Karen's assurance, despite the mention of this Jessica person. "Too much. I dunno what I'm supposed to do-"

Of course he worried. He worried about her like she worried about him. It was just that he knew what he was doing and she didn't. That's why she wanted to be taught. "I know you would.. you have. But I don't want you to have to do that." What was she supposed to do? Not only stop pissing people off, but stop talking to Frank, or Matt or Jessica or anyone else who had super powers and who dealt with violence all the time? The only person she would have left then was Foggy, and he was too busy being a big time lawyer. "Don't tempt me," she countered, squeezing his hand in return with a smile.

Karen just nodded her head and stopped along with him, having expected that bombshell to get him to stop in his tracks. She thought about saying something smartass like 'well he wears a mask so' but she didn't. "He's not like you or the others, out in the open. Telling everyone who you are. Trust me. I was.. the same, when he told me. Which I mean, if you want to hit him, you have my full permission. Him and his secrets." She sighed a bit.

She squeezed his hand again. "You just go on acting like everything is normal. Or try to. That's all you can do. I'm here. I'm not going anywhere."
