Who: Val and Bruce
Where: Central Park
When: Saturday afternoon
Rating/Warnings: Green, fittingly.

Ice skating hadn't really panned out today but that didn't mean it couldn't be done tomorrow. Instead of that, and completely ignoring the fact that dogs needed a fixed schedule that included what time they went out, Valkyrie decided to walk her new dog Dido through Central Park; they both needed exercise and enjoyed it, and the park was large enough.

It was sad, however, that because of Dido's race's bad reputation they had received enough wary looks to warrant the withdrawal of Val's decision to let her run free. Instead she was on a firm leash, loose enough that Dido could at least trot, and Val walked around all the nature and all the...whatever else as she tried not to stare too adoringly at her dog.

After a while, Val got herself a chocolate croissant - none for Dido, though she'd packed a few dog biscuits that Dido was munching on while sitting at Valkyrie's feet on a bench. She'd had no idea what any of the ingredients meant but chocolate was good, this she had already established, and so was this croissant. Looking idly around, Val leaned forward when she thought she saw someone familiar: Big Guy's Smaller Guy. If he was here, however, the only people left manning the ship was Heimdall and...Korg.

It could also not be him and she'd be making a fool of herself by calling him over. Instead, she decided to put Dido to work.

"Dido! Go get the treat!" She told the cream colored Pitbull Terrier mix, before throwing a bone-shaped biscuit near the man's feet, and the puppy rushed to lap it up off the ground with no care for whoever might be reaching that exact spot at that exact moment. Val smirked. "Oh, sorry! I just adopted her she's very... raw."

If there was one thing Bruce had learned about being the Hulk was that the more exercise he got the better things were especially as the more tired his body and by extension brain the less chance he had of big green making an appearance. He didn't want to surround himself with people so he opted for Central Park as it was big enough with a lot of large open spaces so he could stay out of people's way and would also allow the Hulk a lot of room to move if he did happen to manifest.

He had headphones on with music playing so he didn't hear the voice instructing the dog to go get its treat and he didn't know there was a dog until one was right in his way eagerly and happily lapping up something off the ground.

Bruce's hands went to his headphones to pull them off his ears and he immediately set himself into a crouch as he gave the young dog all the attention it wanted and more. He unlike everybody else didn't see the dog for the dangerous dog that others saw but then he was Bruce and he knew a little something about having a monster inside and having the whole world judge you for it without knowing you.

"Aren't you gorgeous?" he said with a warm smile as the puppy reacted well to hands on ears and there was soon a tongue happily lapping at and taking full advantage of tasting skin. And then its owner was there and she spoke, immediately recognition dawned on Bruce and he looked up to see sure enough Val.

His lips pulled into an easy smile complete with teeth, "Hey."

It was really sweet to watch Dido get the love she deserved from someone other than Valkyrie herself or her housemates, and Val found herself glad that Bruce also appeared to like dogs. She couldn't believe she had lived this long without having one. While still not being very sentimental, Valkyrie had felt from the first day that if something happened to this two year-old little miracle she would go on a violent rampage of some kind.

Val got up from the bench, licking the excess chocolate squeezing out of the croissant as she walked to both Dido and Bruce.

"Hey yourself." She greeted, mouth full of chocolate goodness. She had the presence of mind to chew and swallow the rest of it, then lick any chocolate stains off her lips before continuing. "I was wondering when I'd seen you turn up here."

With Dido thoroughly greeted Bruce rose up from his crouched position and rubbed a hand through his hair. "Me or the Big Guy?" Val had come to know the Hulk first and Bruce second after all.

"He wasn't all that happy to be back," he shared with a shrug. "Not that I can blame him. It's not his relationship with Earth has been all that great." Though thankfully Bruce had managed to stay in control so there was no reason for the Hulk to make an appearance.

He glanced down as Dido licked his hand. "How you liking Earth so far?"

Dido seemed excited and amicable towards Bruce, which told Val either that her dog was a good judge of character, or Bruce was a good character. Probably both. The dog did seem curious about him though, and hadn't quit sniffing at him, all around him in fact, even when he stood up. Valkyrie wondered if she had picked up on what lied beneath.

Raising an eyebrow at the question, Val shrugged. "Why can't it be both? Because it is, fundamentally." She motioned for him to join her at the bench, walking slowly. "Last I saw you, you were Bruce so I imagined Bruce ending up here. But I guess something like this would bring the Big Guy out, huh?"

She let out a faint 'awww' at knowing the Big Guy wasn't too happy with his less than triumphant return to his origins. "Maybe we can change that. Stupid and interesting thing've been happening here, you'll both find it fascinating."

As for how she was finding Earth, well. It was a two-sided crock of shit. She shrugged unconvincingly. "It's better than Sakaar?"

Bruce had noticed how Dido seemed rather insistent on sniffing at him but he didn't really stop the dog and instead focused his attention on Val.

"Just checking," he said with a rueful smirk. At her invite he fell in step beside her and he snorted quietly. "Mm, you could say that. Pretty sure Dr Strange's roof would agree considering the Big Guy made his crash landing through it."

Fascinating? Hopefully a good kind of fascinating and not the stressful kind or well Hulk would make an appearance and Bruce was still concerned about being lost forever.

"You don't sound convinced," Bruce shared as he settled on the bench beside Val.

In typical Valkyrie fashion, merely imagining the Hulk crashing in through Dr. Strange's roof made her laugh heartily, especially because of all the people she knew, the wizard seemed the most likely to really have his day ruined by something like that. "That must be why he won't let me come over and check his artifacts. Thor broke his stuff, you broke his stuff... He can't trust anyone."

Of course fascinating wasn't really the word for the storm of sharks that had occurred, and neither did she think Bruce would have appreciated it. The Big Guy would definitely have come out, which would have been helpful but not to Bruce. It was sad for Val that things were so dicey between Bruce's two sides, but not as much as it must be for Bruce.

It was her turn to give a rueful smirk. "It was sudden, and not what I was doing or planned to do. I can't get back to Asgard, none of us can, so we're basically useless. I'm trying to cope but..." She shrugged. "I didn't do the whole waking up thing to be useless."

"Some of those rooms are terrifying," Bruce shared as he recalled the near demonic experience he had in one of them when he'd been getting dressed. "I've no idea how they relax in that place." And he really didn't, he was pretty sure he'd be on high alert all the time so it was probably a good thing he'd gotten out of there quickly.

He listened as Val explained things and he gave an acknowledging nod of his head.

"I can see how that would be difficult," he offered with a sympathetic smile. "And just because you can't go home doesn't mean you're useless. This place, Earth, has the unfortunate habit of attracting all the wrong kind of attention so your skills will most definitely not be wasted or underappreciated."

Once again, Val laughed. "I think you're not a true... whatever wizard sorcerer kind of thing he is if half your possessions aren't, well, possessed. And terrifying."

While considering what Bruce was telling her, Valkyrie leaned back against the bench, scratching Dido's chin. "I suppose. We did a great job with the sharks, from my perspective, but got vilified on television immediately after so that was grand."

Looking at Bruce for a moment, she sighed. "What about you? Now that you're here, will you resume whatever life you had before Sakaar? Can you?"

"Yeah, that tends to happen," Bruce remarked with a grimace. "Do the right thing and your efforts go unappreciated." He knew that all too well, especially as far as the Hulk went. People were afraid of him, really afraid in fact.

He looked away for a moment as Val asked him about what he was going to do and then shook his head. "Mm, not really. I mean before I joined the Avengers I was on the run, hiding away in whatever remote places I could find so that I and the Hulk could be left alone."

And Bruce was pretty certain he'd burned a lot of bridges.

There was a moment after Bruce spoke where Val simply looked towards Bruce with a wondering look. Of course, she wasn't going to keep it to herself. "Is that what happens to the Big Guy? And you by extension?"

It sounded like a hard life to live if you didn't have a spaceship and a whole galaxy, but Val could still relate to what Bruce had been living like before. "But now people know you and count on you and you can't just drop off the map again." She reasoned. "I hear you're buddies with the Stark man, you could lean on that friendship. Or we could find you a place at the present Asgardian delegation on Earth. And you could do science again maybe?"

Bruce let out an awkward sound which also involved his hand going into his hair where it scrubbed through and pressed fingertips to his scalps. "More often than not," he said with a nod.

All of the things Val spoke about sounded amazing but Bruce, well, he wasn't so sure it could all work out like that. Not when he had the distinct concern that the next time he turned into the Hulk that he Bruce Banner would cease to exist.

"Maybe, I mean there's a lot of options, just gotta figure them all out."

"People are scared, aren't they? Because he's huge and green and... unusual." She patted Bruce on the shoulder, smiling knowingly. "It's alright. You will get used to people side-eyeing you in time. Meanwhile you keep doing good because, I mean, I can't see you doing evil. I suppose standing by is also an option."

With a pause, Val looked away and rolled her eyes, remembering her own period of standing by...and when that period ended. "'Til it isn't."

Valkyrie sighed deeply, nodding. Being at a crossroads was never easy, she knew that very well. "Well if you need anything, I'm around. Contrary to belief I'm more than my drinking or my fighting, and contrary to your belief I don't necessarily like the Big Guy better."

"Yeah," Bruce said with a nod of his head. "Plus he's angry and the angrier he is the more scared they become so the angrier he becomes. Honestly it's a horrible cycle." He could stand by but Bruce wasn't the sort of person to be able to do that. Even in India he'd done everything he could to help even when he was meant to be hiding.

He scratched at his eyebrow as Val admitted that she didn't necessarily like the Big Guy better and he gave a small smile. "I suppose I can't hold that against you, you did meet him first and he likes you." Bruce shrugged. "I mean he has a nickname for you after all."

Bruce cleared his throat. "And uh if you need anything then I'm here too, whatever you need."

Valkyrie once again spent a moment looking at Bruce before speaking, trying to assess just how much of him was in the Big Guy, and how much of the Big Guy bled onto him. Enough that Dido seemed to not want to stop sniffing at him, but Valkyrie was more interested in the personality aspect of it.

"You know... You don't remember this, I guess, but angry is not all he is. I mean sure, underneath it all, yeah but so am I. He's funny, you know? And he has manners. Said 'please' once." She smiled, and bumped his shoulder with hers. "You've been influencing him, I think."

A moment passed when she was thinking about how in reality, the Big Guy was the first friend she'd made in a long time. Valkyrie smiled at all their sparring and the laughing, some drinking (more her than him), happy times and no real conscience. Good times. "He was the first person in a long time to look happy to see me."

She then shifted, and narrowed her eyes at him. "Why'd you mention that he likes me as if that's unique to him? Does that mean you don't?"

Valkyrie shrugged, then. She wasn't for everyone, clearly. She still smiled appreciatively when Bruce returned the offer, but she wouldn't take it. He was probably just being nice.

It was nice to hear another person's perspective on him and the Hulk, especially when that person had seen another side of the Hulk that nobody else had. "Don't let him hear you say that, he might not like it too much. I'm puny Banner after all."

"It is unique," Bruce argued. "The Hulk, he doesn't like a lot of people so the fact he liked you is immense. Impressive even." He hurriedly explained as he was aware that his words had been taken the wrong way. "And I didn't mean that I don't like you because I do, like you, that is."

Bruce sighed, frustrated at himself for not being able to articulate himself as well as he could in his mind or about science. "So, yeah, it's a mutual like."

"Ehhhh whatever, next time I see him I'll set him to rights about you. No puny Banner would've dived off that ship to go fight Hela." And no one puny had ever shocked her like he did at that moment. Boy that had been a power move. Even if it started with him splattered on the Bifrost. Valkyrie turned away to hide her self-satisfied smirk at how Bruce described the Big Guy's reaction to her. Then she shrugged. "Well, we have that in common. Don't like a lot of people either."

While she listened to the adorably fumbling Bruce explain his way out of what seemed to have been Valkyrie misconstruing his comment. "Alright; sorry, sorry." She looked at him both apologetically, and embarrassed for needing to apologize. "You want a chocolate cra...cray...thingy? My treat?"

Yeah, the less said about his splattering on the Bifrost the better because that had supposed to be an epic moment but hey he had enough to dwell on without adding that into the mix.

"I don't think that's a bad thing," Bruce shared with a wry smile. "Some people just aren't worth the time." Like General Ross for instance. Total waste of a living breathing human being.

He was very relieved when Val accepted his apology and she had realised he hadn't meant his comment the way it had come out. "Yeah," he agreed with a nod and smile. "That would be great. I'm starving."

Valkyrie snickered just as wryly, nodding in agreement with Bruce's assessment of some people. Back on Sakaar most people pretended to like you if you fulfilled some sort of role that contributed to their well-being in some way. Even she had played that game, along with many others, but the truth was she hadn't liked or been liked until Hulk had shown up. And then Thor...and Bruce, she supposed. And Loki, eventually. But not in Sakaar, so that didn't count.

When Bruce accepted her offer Valkyrie stood up, grinning, and motioned for him to come along. "Come on, then. The place where I got mine isn't far. I'll even give you a dog biscuit so you can distract Dido from yours while you're eating, because she'll ask no matter how much I try to get her not to. She's gotten some bad habits but I can't... I don't do corporal punishment."

As if on cue, Dido sniffled and licked at Bruce's hand again. "She's really into you! It's adorable."

"Well that makes sense," Bruce remarked as he fell into step beside Val. "What with the Grandmaster's melting stick." He hadn't ever been on the receiving end of it but he'd known about it.

He turned his head as Dido licked his hand and he smiled, real and genuine this time with nothing being held back because how could he with a dog that cute?

"The feeling's mutual," he said with a chuckle as he rubbed his hand over Dido's ears.

There was another thing Val drank to forget about: the Grandmaster's stick. She winced when Bruce mentioned it, then paused to ruffle Dido's short hair between her ears as if apologizing for imagining it happen to her.

"Midgardians say dogs sense good people, right? So this is a certificate of goodness right there." She said, pointing towards the yellow and brown cart where she had gotten her croissant. Stopping, she put Dido's leash between Bruce's hands and made him hold it firmly. "It's over there. Can you hold onto Dido's leash for me?"

Smiling, she rushed over to the cart and stood in line for only a little while before buying another croissant for herself, and two for Bruce. Once she got back to him, Valkyrie exchanged the leash for the two croissants. "Here you go! I hope she wasn't too much to handle."

Motioning for another bench nearby, Valkyrie pulled biscuits out of her pocket to distract Dido from Bruce's food.

"Yeah, that's what they say," Bruce said with a nod, definitely pleased that Dido liked him as he knew that animals could sense the Hulk under the surface. The same Hulk who if he was to observe from a completely objective point of view would be the embodiment of everything he'd experienced as a child and his own anger issues.

He took a hold of the leash as it was given to him and as Val went to get food he busied himself with paying attention to Dido in the form of ear rubs and idle conversation.

"Not at all," he assured Val as he took a hold of the croissants with an appreciative smile. "Think she was too busy enjoying all the fuss."

"She knows, you know? Dogs know." Valkyrie told him cryptically, smiling. No dog would have let a dangerous angry monster rub between her ears to the point where she looked sleepy. So sleepy, she laid down on the floor between Val's feet and Bruce's when the say back down. Then again maybe Dido was special. Val had also read they sensed anxiety as a threat and if anyone was always at least a little anxious, it was Bruce. But here he was, making her dog fall in love with him.

"Well then now you enjoy the chocolate. Chocolate is amazing. Chocolate and dogs, huh? We're having a great day." She told him, settling back against the bench before taking one big delicious bite of her croissant. She looked at Bruce and then Dido, then sighed in contentment.
