Open to anyone that wants to break orbit for a few hours
Running through a final pre-flight check, Peter made sure that the armory racks were squared away, that the weapons systems were locked to his console and then looked around the cabin. He tried to figure out if there was anything else he should secure before letting a group of Terrans, especially one that included a couple of teenage boys, onboard.

He wondered if there was anything that he was missing that Stakar would have noticed, then shrugged inwardly. Yondu had taught him to fly when he was ten. Sure he’d destroyed a small moon….. Kraglin had called it a glorified asteroid, on the edge of of the Andromeda galaxy when he was learning how to execute an evasion maneuver consisting of a barrel roll, followed by a three point turn that culminated in a full stop that Yondu had called the Drunken Kree. There was also the time that he’d been trying to clear out the plasma injectors and instead hit the biohazard recycling tank evacuation lever without first disengaging the external cover plate. The pressure had blown a main line and coated the entire cargo bay with hundreds of gallons of a greasy grey liquid that smelled like a combination of a truck stop bathroom and the kind of perfume his grandmother had once worn. Bet that’s when Taserface started hating my guts, Peter thought remembering that while his Daddy had yelled at him, called him a wretched little waste of oxygen…..Yondu had delegated the actual clean up to Taserface.

Peter appreciated the fact that the Benetar had a spot on the roof of Avengers tower, taking a bunch of people up in space sounded fun. Driving them all the way to upstate New York sounded like hell.

He opened the main hatch, extended the ramp and wondered if they had barf bags on board….. he vaguely remembered something about airplanes having them and wondered if other Terrans ever got spacesick. “Eh, it’ll be fine.” He made his way down the ramp, trying to decide what kind of music you played for someone’s first trip to space.

Ned was on the roof so fast his gym teacher would not believe he was the same kid who often asked to sit out during soccer and contact sports. He was out of breath as he showed up, though, with his backpack and a blue bucket hat he thought would match being in outer space.

He opened his mouth and stopped short of saying 'Mr. Star-Lord'. Instead he shouted "Quill! Hi! I'm Ned." He waved even though he was right there in front of the way-too-cool looking guy. "Thank you so much for bringing me to space. I've never been. The closest thing was watching Peter fly into space on the outside of a space ship and that was pretty terrifying.

“Hey, glad you could make it!”, Peter paused and said, “Legit.... first rule of safe space flight.” He pointed to the outside of the ship, “Outside. Note. No seats.” He grinned, “Inside. Better seating and oxygen. Parker is straight up gangster for that move.”

“You know Gamora, right?”

"Hey Ned," Gamora walked up to the ship, trying to hide her grin at how excited he looked to be seeing a real life spaceship. "The Benatar is gorgeous, isn't she? Wait until we get her up in the sky."

"Hey you," she slid an arm around Peter's waist, giving him a quick kiss. "You know I'm 100% leaving you when this guy is legal, right?"

Peter wasn’t as visibly excited as Ned - he’d been to space before, and he’d died there - but he wasn’t about to let his best friend go alone. Exposure therapy was a thing, right? And besides, this would likely be a much more positive experience given that there wasn’t a genocidal alien on the loose. Peter had his web-shooters strapped on beneath the sleeves of his hoodie just in case.

"Hey guys," Peter greeted, stepping in behind Ned and grinning at his enthusiasm. "I gotta say...this is a lot cooler than the last spaceship I was in." And it was; the alien Tony had dubbed Squidward’s aircraft was cold and informal, but this almost looked like a home.

"Hey, man, it's good to see you!" Peter looked his friend, realized that this was one of the few people in this reality who said they knew him, who'd said that they were friends..... and Peter felt it right away. Maybe there are some people that you click with in any reality, Peter thought. A very brief shadow crossed his face as he looked at the two young men in front of them. He couldn't help but the think about how screwed up Peter and Ned..... and well himself and Gamora and Nebula, too many kids in the world had been forced to fight and kill and sometimes even die for adults whose job its was to protect them. We'll just make sure they don't have to figure it out alone, that's for damn sure, Peter thought.

"So dude, you know I can't give a zero aliens guarantee, but I can promise you that it's 99.9 % that she," Peter gestured toward Gamora, "Won't lay eggs in your chest." He grinned.

"Before we head in and start firing up the engines," Peter pointed at Gamora and Ned, "You two, you gotta' get code names. Seriously, man. It's just how we roll in this whole superhero, save the world gig, right Peter? You can't get the t-shirt and the entry codes and the special handshake unless you got a code name."

Ned hadn't seen Gamora in person and she was so cool. Was she the first official alien he had ever met? Maybe? He wasn't sure. Maybe he had met aliens in a Bodega in Queens and hadn't even known it. Maybe Flash was an alien.

No, that was insulting aliens.

He was blushing a little from Gamora's tease about him being legal. Thankfully Quill was giving him something to focus on. "A code name?" He looked to Peter - he was thankful his best friend was coming along too. Sure, he trusted Quill not to kill him, but still, having someone familiar around was good. Having Peter felt safer.

"Is Guy In The Chair not cool enough?" No, it wasn't. Especially for space. "Uh.. okay. What should it be?" Suddenly all he could hear was all of the names Flash called him over the years and none of them were code name worthy, that was for sure.

"Please ignore him, Parker" Gamora said in mock exasperation. "The alien most likely to lay an egg in this ship is Star Lord, if you try to mess with the tape deck."

She started up the ramp heading into the cargo hold, "Let's quit standing around talking and get up there, these guys probably have curfews and we have a long way to go. We can brainstorm codenames while you show them around."

She smiled at Ned, wishing she felt about exploring Terra like he did about space, "I think you need a different Guardian codename, just don't let Quill pick it out. You could end up with something like Taserface."

“I did not choose the name Taserface. I would have gone with Sactap, but that’s because I know his ex boyfriend.”

“Guy in the chair is a cool name, but shorter is easier for the Universal Translator. I wanted my code name to be Ren, but Yondu told me I had to stick with the one my mom picked out. Seriously, dude,.... don’t let your mom be the one who picks your code name.” Once everyone was in the ship, Peter hit the button that pulled up the ramp and turned to Ned and Peter, “The Benetar is one of the Ravagers M ships. She’s built to be fast, but she’s also built to take a beating.

He grinned, “I oughta know I’ve put her through hell a few times.” He showed around the nav stations, showed them how to pull out the screens that showed the ship’s status, position in the galaxy and the nearest jump points.”

Peter sat in the cockpit and started flipping switches, “Pick your seats, gentlemen.”

Peter chose a seat next to Ned, and while his palms were clammy with nerves, it was hard to let himself get too lost in the anxiety when Quill was pointing out the ship's tech. "Woah." He looked away from the screens for only a moment to buckle himself in, making sure that Ned's was all set tight too. "So those jump points - are you talking vortexes here? Are they shortcuts? Like a space highway?"

He could ask questions for days, honestly. As a kid who'd grown up a sci-fi nerd, things like this were almost unfathomable. And complicated, too, now that he had his own not so good memories of other planets to contrast it to.

"Hey-" Peter nudged Ned, thinking on those nicknames. "What about Skywalker for you? I don't think anyone who goes way out there besides Carol and the Guardians know about Star Wars, so it'd sound all original and awesome."

Ned's eyes were everywhere. He was like a kid in a candy store except the store was all tech. He was completely floored every time he saw something that he wasn't sure what it did. Some of the stuff he thought he had a good idea what it would do by looking at it.

He made sure he was secure - he triple checked it, really, because he did not want to fall out of his chair in front of all the cool people.

His eyes widened at Peters's suggestion. "You think I could go by that? Do you think I've... earned something like that?" Was he cool enough to pull it off? WAS HE?!

"Uh.. How about? Um. Skywalker?" And Ned was blushing really hard now.

Quill tilted his head and looked at Ned for a minute, "Hell yeah! It's perfect! Data streams through the sky and your the badass who virtually walks through it, taking what you need for your team, blasting firewalls away and kicking over lockouts." Peter nodded, "Good call, Parker. I like it!"

He had several ideas for a code name for Gamora. Virtually all of them would get him killed, he decided to change the subject, "Sorry guys, I'm a dumbass. I forgot to have you record an access pass," He hit a button which lowered the ramp back to the deck. "Gamora, could you show them how to record it, I'll finish the pre-flight check.

Shuri hadn't forgotten the offer to go into space. How could anyone possibly do that? She was just running behind because that seemed to be her life right now. Trying to figure out what had happened to the Captain and Dr. Banner was taking a lot of her focus. She tended to lose track of time.

Arriving on the roof of the Avenger's Tower reminded her a little of Wakanda. The ships stored here were beautiful, and one of them was her goal.

Her hair a la Princess Leia, sort of, and casually dressed in shorts, sneakers, a denim jacket and a t-shirt that declared 'Life is Beautiful!', Shuri jumped up and down and waved at what she hoped was a spot on the Benetar where someone would see her.

"Come on Skywalker, Spidey" Gamora gestured to the back of the ship. "We need to use the console in the cargo bay to set up the codes." She paused on her way past, and leaned over Peter's shoulder, murmuring in his ear, "Still waiting for my codename, Star Lord. Better make it a good one."

She placed her hand on the panel, and a voice asked for her access code. "I'm holdin' out for a hero 'til the end of the night," Gamora said, waited for the system to log her in then added, "System settings, add Guardian access code."

She turned to Ned and Peter. "You place your hand on the panel, so it can add your biometrics to the system. It will ask you to voice identify with your name. and then an access phrase. Because this is the Benatar, it is 100% required that this be a song lyric." She smirked. "Sorry, those are Captain's orders."

She looked out the cargo bay doors, and saw Shuri heading across the roof, and waved back. "Come on up, Shuri! You're just in time, we're just doing pre-flight checks now."

She considered herself fortunate that they hadn't left without her. Running up the ramp, she said, a little breathlessly, "Sorry I am late, and hello, Gamora, in person, this time." She held out her hand to the woman and nodded toward the boys. "Peter, Ned, isn't this exciting? I brought my GoPro, to capture every moment I can on film. Whoo-hoo!"

After a final jump in the air, she ceased rambling and asked, "So, what are we doing now?"

This was exciting. It wasn't just exciting that apparently his code name was going to be Skywalker, but also because he was going to be in the Guardian's access bank? Did this make him a Guardian now?! WHY WAS TODAY SO COOL. It really made up for Flash this afternoon.

"Uh, okay." He nodded. There was a lot of pressure to pick the perfect song title. In fact, there were several good ones floating around in his head - Queen, Rolling Stones, Ed Sheeran. As Ned put his hand on the console, though, and said his name, the lyrics that came out was a sudden, "Never gonna give you up."

Oh my God. Did he just Rick Roll space superheroes?!

"That's perfect," Gamora had yet to encounter this particular internet meme, so she approved of Ned's choice without irony. "Listen, this means you're Guardians okay, so if things go totally sideways and we need to bug out, you get yourself to the ship and let yourself in."

She looked at Peter, "Okay Spidey, you're up, once we have access codes, I'll walk you through prep for takeoff while the captain does the nerd tour. I know Quill told Ned he could be co-pilot, but the gunner seats have an even better view."

"That was legendary, Skywalker." He was totally going to call him that all the time now. Peter raised his hand to fist-bump Ned - they'd have to explain the concept of Rick Rolling to Gamora once they got back to Earth. He reached to place his hand on the panel, giving his name and then pausing for a moment while his mind raced through song lyrics. "Okay okay, umm - I've been too long and I'm glad to be back."

He heard that song in Tony's workshop pretty often, though Peter still couldn't safely say if it was Led Zeppelin or AC/DC. "So are there like...any emergency exits here? Just in case?"

Ned kind of wanted to do the nerd tour too, but he didn't say that because he guessed it was implied that Gamora's tour would be cooler. Ned wanted to be cooler - especially after the day he had with Flash - so he just sort of nodded and went along with it all, though he definitely high-fived Peter because high-fives were still definitely cool.

"You mean like, escape pods? Because I don't think I want to exit out directly into space when I'm panicking." It would probably not end well, what with the immediate death thing.

"We definitely have an escape pod," Gamora led them to the hatch leading to the space pod. "It seats up to 5 and is actually works like it's own tiny ship. We were able to install a secondary tape deck in here with the upgrades, so now it's literally a mini-Benatar."

She slid into the escape pod, flipping switches to power it up to show the boys how it worked. "Peter's earpiece opens up into a helmet so he can actually spacewalk, although I'm not sure why we haven't stocked enough for everyone. He's really possessive of his tech, sometimes."

She gave them a few moments to look around the space pod before asking, "You wanna see the lasers?"

Peter grinned at Shuri's enthusiasm and then remembered that she was royalty. As he motioned for her to precede him towards the navigation station, "Hey, so I only know three things about Wakanda; you guys have the market cornered on vibranium, your brother is a badass king and when your people start saying Yibambe, shit is about to get real."

He pulled up the screens, "So this allows us to see all jump points in the vicinity and allows us to recalibrate the proximity alarms for the quadrant, stuff like that. ". He pointed down at the table in front of them, "Oh and Thor passed out on this table once."

Shuri laughed. "Those are three very good things to know. Do you know what 'Yibambe' means? 'Hold the line' or 'hold strong'. A very powerful word for battle."

She looked at the screens while Peter introduced her to some of the ship's controls. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to not only tour a spaceship, but to actually go for a trip, even a short jaunt, was so exciting.

"Do the jump points move around or are they stationary? Is it like a gateway from point a to point b or just a recognized route to somewhere? And why was Thor passed out on that table?"

So many questions, so little time.

"I wasn't pretty sure it meant, 'Get off our lawn' or 'Gonna whoop your ass', Close enough, I guess." Peter leaned against the table.

"They're artificial wormholes, so theoretically they are stationary....," he shrugged, "Each jump takes you from one point to another and based on that, you chose your next point. Think of them more like intersections in space"

He spread his hands expansively, "Long story, but basically we saved him. We're good like that." Peter strode over to the cockpit, and pointed to a seat behind him. If you want to buckle in we'll be ready for take off.

As soon as he sat down and buckled in, he turned back to Shuri, "So you can easily pull up the console screens from that seat. It's set to mirror mine, so you can see me do the final systems check and the start up sequence.

"Gamora, we are five minutes and counting to lift off." Peter called out.

"Ah, good, good," she said, sitting in the seat behind him and finding the straps to secure herself as he instructed. Shuri looked at the console before her and studied it to determine how easily she could activate the screens. It took less than ten seconds to figure it out, which was a relief.

Maybe some things didn't change to the extent that they became unrecognizable.

"This is fantastic," she said, watching the screen closely in order to follow what Peter was doing. "Five minutes? It does not take long to prepare for flight, especially when you think of all the steps required for a rocket to launch from Cape Canaveral, for instance."

Shuri's enthusiasm brought a huge grin to Peter's face, "This ship was built to be a workhorse, so her engine tech is pretty old school." He checked the quantum tachyon field generator gauge , looked at it critically, and thunked the gauge by snapping his finger off of his thumb.

Smiling as the levels rose appropriately, "The long range engine drive is based around the Alcubierre bubble theory. She harvests color-glass condensate as she travels through jump points, which gives her the energy for the next jump point.."

Scanning down the control panel, he said "Our thrusters and the in system engines are powered by deuterium set into a crystalline matrix. If we didn't use the jump points , or the downforce cambre ram in system we could probably go five years without doing the refuel and refit. I try to conserve it though because the R/R takes fricken forever."

At the warning that it was time to prep for takeoff, Gamora led Peter and Ned back to the cockpit, pointing out the co-pilot seat to Ned before heading down to the gunner stations below, gesturing to Drax’s seat for Spidey. “Make sure you’re buckled in tight, the g-force to get out of Terran gravity isn’t a joke. Once we’re in deep space, it will be safe to move around again.”

She pulled up a navigation panel at her seat, scrolling through the preflight checklist. “Cross check, all systems engaged and prepped for takeoff, Captain. Oh, wait... You did forget one thing.” She reached into a compartment next to her seat and pulled out a mix tape, tossing it up to Peter, before turning back to the star map.

Peter caught the tape in one hand and popped into the console, and opened a comm channel "La Guardia Ground, this is the ISS Benetar at Avengers Tower, ready for rapid vertical lift off. If you can clear me a..." he gave the nav control a final check, "11.5 second window of clear air that would be peachy." He turned to the others, "Technically, we're not really covered by FAA, but you know these Tower guys can be real dicks if you hurt their jurisdictional fee fees ."

"ISS Benetar, this is La Guardia Ground. You are advised that your personal commentary is unnecessary. Is this official Avengers Business?"

Peter rolled his eyes, "La Guardia Ground, this is the official business of the Intergalactic Guardians. Are you clearing me a path or you want me to play pinball in your approach?"

There was a pause while the tower decided whether or not they were in the mood to play with a jackass in a spaceship, "ISS Benetar you are go for lift off, T-10 at my mark."

The entire ship quivered as Peter throttled the lift off engines to hot standby and then tapped his finger impatiently on the yoke.

"La Guardia Ground to ISS Benetar. I am authorized by shift command to advise you of the following: No, you're the dick. And Mark. Over."

Peter grinned as the countdown rapidly approached, "ISS Benetar is a go for vertical liftoff." Peter left the comm unit open just long enough for the control tower to hear When I die and they lay me to rest.... Gonna go to the place that's the best before he killed the comm and launched.

Gamora's rundown had helped put Peter a little bit more at ease and got him thinking that space really could be more cool than scary. Maybe. He took out his phone and sneaked a few pictures of Ned in the co-pilot's seat - they'd probably be nerding out over all this in a big way later.

When the ship started to lift off, Peter gripped at the armrests of the seat, trying to play it cool. He was Spider-man, right? He'd gotten through a whole lot more than a trip to space with two people who were definitely professionals at this. "Awesome," Peter said. Even though his stomach was doing flip-flops, Quill's exchange with the officials was pretty badass.

Before they soared out of the atmosphere and things got real, Peter looked over at Shuri. "Is this your first time in space?" Wakanda was so far advanced with their tech that he wouldn't be surprised if they found a way up before anyone else did.

The Peter who was Spiderman looked a bit tense, the way one who might have issues with flying in an airplane might behave. Given his incredible strength, Shuri hoped the armrests would survive the journey.

"This is my first time," she replied, glad she was strapped in. She reached for the strap across her chest, which carried the pouch for her GoPro, and pulled the pouch to her lap. There she extracted the camera and with practiced ease, flipped it for filming through the large windows of the cockpit.

"Okay, we are live on the Benatar and headed for space!"

They were going into space. Somehow it seemed cooler that an airport had to acknowledge the spaceship that if they were just sneaking up into the sky. He really wished he could send a text to Flash showing the boy that he was on a spaceship, but Ned knew he couldn't - bummer.

The teenage boy was unaware of Peter's nerves - it didn't help that he was riding in the co-pilot seat while Peter was elsewhere, but Ned was also so caught up in just being in a spaceship, he was having a hard time noticing anything else. He even bobbed his head at the song, he was that excited. "I really hope I don't throw up!" Though no promises. And for once, Ned wasn't even worried about being embarrassed.

As Peter navigated a series of dodge and weave maneuvers to avoid orbital debris, Gamora pulled up the weapons control panel, mirroring her screen image in front of Spidey. "See that jettisoned rocket shielding over there," She pointed at the large piece of space junk in the distance before looking up at the cockpit, "Hey babe, can you hold steady, Spidey and I are going to do some community service okay?"

She brought the lasers online, and set up the target. You just line your target up, like this.. and then push that trigger right here." She pulled the trigger zapping the metal into microscopic particles. She reached over to the controls in front of him, activating his weapon. "Wanna try?"

More loudly, he called, "Sure, Boo, you got it." He jacked the grav stabilizers up by four notches and then said, "Pete, she makes me nervous , too. Don't worry about it. If anyone is getting stabbed today, it'll be me."

He leaned over, "Ned. See that green valve? The one that looks like Kermit the Frog's head on a stick? I might need you to pull it."

"Shuri, Pull up the screen in your armrest. If you swipe it right, you'll be able to access the external visual sensors. Keep an eye out for the Creepers. Guys with giant heads cruising the moon in their skeezy overcoats. If you see them, let me know."

Peter was trying not to do any damage to the armrest with his tight grip, but the further away they got from Earth, the further away his thoughts went too. May and MJ and so many people he cared about were back down there on that little tiny sphere that was getting smaller by the second, and it was too easy to remember the disaster of last time. He could jump off of a building a hundred stories high, but space, apparently, was his weak spot.

Quill's comment covering him and Gamora’s distraction came at just the right time. Peter gave her a somewhat sheepish smile, his tension easing while he had something else to focus on. "Definitely." Nothing like cutting up some space junk to avoid a panic attack. He watched Gamora's actions before repeating them on his own screen, aligning the target with a piece of debris and letting it go.

"That's pretty cool." Peter kept his eye out for more space junk - it helped him feel more in control. Though it didn't sound like they wanted a run-in, the mention of the Creepers was interesting. "The universe seems like it's way bigger than what school taught us."

Shuri located the button that activated the screen and, as Peter instructed, started looking for 'Creepers'.

"Who are these people on the moon? And why are they wearing overcoats when the moon has no weather?" Then she glanced down at Spider-Pete and said, "Good shooting! Is it like a video game?"

To Ned, she stage-whispered, "Please do not throw up." To Pilot-Pete, she asked, "How do you know there are people on the moon in the first place? Is there a civilization there?"

Maybe that would explain the rumours about cheese.

There was no guarantee that he wasn't going to puke, but he was going to try really hard not to. He was even more worried about it because Shuri asked him not to.

The entire trip up into space, Ned did not have his eyes open. His eyes were shut tight and he murmured the mantra of 'Do NOT throw up' over and over to himself. Hopefully Quill wouldn't need anything pulled or done from him because Ned was basically trying to stay cool.

The g-force eased as they approached the moon, changing direction to make a wide orbit around to the dark side. The ships artificial gravity took over and suddenly it barely felt like they were moving at all. "We're clear until we head back in," she said, glancing over at the nervous-looking teen next to her and added, "He's a good pilot, the best I've met. We're safer here than on the ground."

She overheard Shuri's questions, and looked up at Peter at the controls. "The Watchers are a species tasked with observing and compiling knowledge about every sentient species in the universe. They usually show up during epic events that they need to document for posterity. Star-Lord is not a fan of being spied on, though."

Keeping his eyes out for the acres of debris that orbited earth, Peter dialed the scanner settings for greater detail, "That's just their cover story. They're a species of creepy old dudes wearing the kind of overcoats that perves in Central Park wear." He glanced at Ned and lowered his voice, "Seriously, man. I'm on the dark side of the moon. You know how it goes, romantic setting, a little music...." He nodded in Gamora's direction, privacy...."

He checked the external stabilizer and pulled it up a notch, "I'm thinking that we're finally getting some where and then..." Peter rolled his eyes, "The Perve Pack is KNOCKING on the window." He winced remembering what had happened next, "Word to the wise, Man. If you take this baby up with a girl, don't start anything unless you've got the harness totally off." He saw what looked like a small flash of movement, "So yeah, scaring Gamora is a really bad idea, those guys could have gotten me killed.l."

Peter brought the Benetar closer to the surface of the moon, "Hey, is it me or it that the Geriatric Ganalyzer Gang at ten o'clock? Y'all we need to prepare for Operation Paybacks are a Bitch."
