Who: Jane & Thor
What: a marriage proposal
Notes/Warnings: n/a
Jane hung up with Pepper and sat in silence for a few minutes. If this mysterious island went for it, Pepper's plan was a good one. The only people they knew could even offer up a marriage to get in was her and Thor. They'd talked around it and fought over it but never came close to getting married.
Jane loved Thor more than anyone on this planet. Her concerns she voiced to Pepper were real. Thor vanishing into space wasn't a concern anymore. Jane trusted him to stay and that whatever they did going forward, they were going to do together. Her bigger worry was her own mortality.
Jane had maybe another 50 years to live, during which she would slowly grow old while Thor stayed the same. Sometimes Jane wondered if it was selfish to keep him, if the right thing to do was to do was let him and save him that pain. But Thor had the right to choose and he'd made it clear he wanted nothing else than to be beside her. And not having Thor with her was a pain Jane didn't want to think about. Jane would not have survived cancer without Asgard's magic and Tony's science but it was Thor who got her through it. Walking through that only solidified that Jane wanted to spend the rest of her days with this good good man. Not even him making her crazy the past month had changed that.
Married or unmarried, Jane wanted Thor. And if saving his brother was the push to make that choice, then she'd make it.
Jane made the short walk from her lab up to the house and went looking for Thor. "Hey," she said, "I have to talk to you about something." They'd last left this decision in her hands. Time to make it happen.
Thor peeked up from the book he was reading and moved his legs up off the couch. It was probably the fifth time he’d attempted to read this Rings Lord book and it was getting tiresome. There was really only one ring -- how could you be a lord of multiple ones if that was the case? There seemed to be many more lords than rings. It should be renamed Lords of the Ring … or whatever it was in the first place. Tossing it aside gladly, he gave her a curious look.
“What should we speak of, my love? I am yours to command.”
Jane smiled a little when she saw what Thor was reading. She'd recommended that for him out of the stack of books they'd brought over from the New Mexico house when they moved. Jane settled in beside him, taking a place where she could lean against his chest.
"I just talked to Pepper. She has an idea of how we might get onto the island where your brother is. Pepper thinks the celebrity wedding route would work. The thing is, the only people famous enough to get them to say yes and in a position to even do it is you and me."
It took Thor a few minutes to fully process what Jane was saying. Initially, he was just happy she wanted to cuddle on the couch. In fact, he would have been happy if that was all she wanted but if he understood her correctly….
Clearing his throat, he shifted a little, his arm curled around her, and tried to speak. Opened his mouth. Closed it. Cleared his throat again. Sat in silence. Tightened his grip a little before finally asking: “Is this a proposal?”
It took Thor longer to reply than Jane had expected and for a wild she thought maybe she had misunderstood his intentions after their conversation. Or maybe something had she changed that Thor hadn’t shared. With Loki missing would he even want to. Then the moment passed, though Jane’s voice echoed oddly in her head when she spoke. “I - I mean yes? Not a good one but I - and you… and it’ll help Loki. So yes. It’s - yes.”
Loki was the last thing on his mind. He could see the practicality of what Jane was saying, and her pragmatism was one thing he adored about her but this? This moment wasn’t about that. Jane would never say or do anything she wasn’t certain about.
“Alright,” he responded slowly, his knee starting to bounce while he tried to process what she had been saying. “This is a proposal. You are asking if we can be wed. I agree...I would like to know if there are conditions to this though….other than the locale, of course.”
He was still 100 percent sure she hadn’t changed her mind about anything else (the crown, mainly) but he wanted to ensure he wasn’t misunderstanding anything.
Jane wriggled a little, shifting and resettling as Thor's fidgeting jiggled against her too. "That's...a very practical question Thor." Honestly she hadn't expected realistic questions first. "I don't think so? If it's Earth style, we just need a rabbi? Unless there's something you want for Asgard?"
Thor couldn’t help but snort. “I do not always resolve issues with my fists of ham, as my brother often likes to say,” he responded gently. “This is …. This is very important to me. And I feel that if I do not get these questions asked now, I will not ask them at all, and later we will have a miscommunication that could result in hurt feelings.”
“The ceremony, you can do whatever you wish. I am not concerned about that. It is, as always, a question of your role. What is it you desire with marriage?”
Jane's eyebrows knit. "I thought I would be the wife and you would be the husband? I don't understand."
Thor burst out in a laugh. "I meant more along your lines within my country but I can absolutely agree with your statement. Your legs look far better in a dress than mine."
Jane smiled for a moment and then her lips pursed. "Thor, do you mean queen again? I thought we talked about that."
"We did," he agreed, "but we still never settled on what you would do. Lady Doctor Consort Love is far too cumbersome for the tongue."
Thor shook his head and leaned down to capture her mouth in a kiss which soon led to a few more and his hand playing with her hair. "Perhaps I should stick to actions rather than words and simply agree to whatever you desire. I believe first and foremost, that is a husband's main priority -- his wife's happiness, is it not?"
Asgardians, I swear had been running through Jane's head until distracted by Thor's kisses. She wrapped an arm across Thor's shoulders and settled in closer against his chest. "Do I need a title?" she asked, face close to his. "Are you going to take kinging back up?"
“I will continue to assist Val in whatever area necessary but I am in no rush to take the mantle on again. Working alongside my sister-in-law is more than enough for me at the moment, and I think, all things considering, it’s the best option for now. Perhaps that might change in the future…” Thor trailed off and shook his head. He wasn’t about to go down that path.
It was bad enough he had weekly therapy to attend. Thanks Tony.
“In your arms, I am nothing more than Thor. It makes sense that you remain simply Jane for it is Jane that I love.”
Jane had an idea of what "in the future" meant for him but it wasn't anything worth thinking about now. "We can figure out resumes later." She threaded her fingers into his hair. "Let's just do this… I love you."
"And I you," he responded back, leaning into her touch. "It will bring me great pleasure to refer to you as my wife. The great Dr. Foster. The most intelligent woman in all the realms. Mine for eternity." He gave a little growl before nipping at her lips. "Now to wait…. I am not a patient man…. How soon can we do this? Having my brother back in my life would be wonderful…."
Jane's interest in maintaining an active conversation was waning. "Very soon, I think." She ducked her head, mouth pressing against Thor's neck, below the line of his beard. "...Pepper's going to help."
"Excellent," he responded, his hands reaching to tug at the hem of her shirt. "Let's leave that in her very capable hands, we've talked enough."
There were better things to do with his time...and hers. They were getting married.
