What: Relationship talk
Where: Carol's apartment
When: After all the cleanup from Thor's storm
Warnings: Nah
Status: complete
Things were going well for Sam. Probably the best they’d been in a long time, possibly ever. Sure, this whole being in an alternate dimension thing was weird, but it wasn’t all that much weirder than his life back home. Plus it had the benefit of Steve not being old and of Tony and Natasha being alive. They still had threats to deal with, but none of them were Thanos level bad, so he’d take it, even if it meant cleaning up after Thor’s temper tantrums.
And, of course, there was Carol. For a long time, Sam had given up on the idea of having any sort of meaningful relationship. First, he was too busy with his veterans groups and dealing with his own PTSD over Riley’s death. Then he was part of the Avengers and not only busy, but had to worry about people only wanting to be with him because he was ‘famous’. With Carol, he didn’t have to worry about any of that. She got the PTSD thing and she was part of the team so she could relate to his biggest issues.
Plus she was hot. And fun. Sam liked her a lot. Might even be falling in love, though he was reluctant to say that yet. There was something that had been on his mind though and this morning, when he woke up in her bed, he decided to muster up the courage to say something.
“Morning,” he said as soon as she began stirring. “Want me to go put on coffee?”
*
Life here in this alternate universe was pretty damn good. Carol had no reason to complain about anything these days. Sure there were some weird things happening, but that was par for the course. That wasn’t any different than being at home. She was with friends, and nothing totally life shattering and horrible had happened. She would thank her lucky stars for that. Not only had she made friends, and had a life, but now there was a boyfriend. She hadn’t had a boyfriend in ages. It felt good to have one.
She really liked Sam, and felt herself falling for him just as much. She wasn’t in a rush though, they were taking their time and that was nice. It made everything much more comfortable. And made her like him even more. Being in a committed relationship was lovely though, something she hadn’t felt in a long time. Safe and protected. Right now she was sprawled out in bed, the light cracking through the windows.
She stirred and rubbed her face, pushing hair out of it before stretching and turning to look over at Sam. She smiled. “Morning. Yes, please.” It was barely english at that point, but she could muster.
*
Sam chuckled at her barely comprehensible words before kissing her forehead and crawling out of bed, finding his shorts and pulling them on before heading out to her kitchen to put on a pot of coffee. Once it was brewing, he poked through her fridge and decided to make some breakfast too. By the time Carol got out of bed and joined him, there were scrambled eggs keeping warm on the stove and bacon frying in a pan.
“Sleep okay?” he asked.
*
For a moment, she just laid there in bed and tried to get the energy and willpower to lift herself up. Finally she pushed herself up, rubbed her eyes and then slooooowly got herself up and out. She pushed on some pajamas, and then washed her face before heading down to get some food and most importantly .. coffee.
Sliding into the seat, Carol finally looked like a person. A person who probably needed a shower and things but she looked actually awake. “Yeah. Real good. Thanks. You? I always worry that I snore or kick or something.”
*
“You drool a lot, but sleeping in a raincoat isn’t really an option,” Sam teased. He was kidding, mostly, about the drooling thing. “Hope you’re hungry.”
He had cooked breakfast enough times in her apartment that he knew where everything was so he’d been able to get everything ready easily. Now that she was awake, he took a couple plates from a cabinet and set them on the table before moving the food over as well.
This was nice. The early morning domesticity. He could get used to it.
*
Carol promptly stuck her tongue out at him, and might have blew a raspberry, which probably justified the shower comment. “Yeah I’m hungry. Thanks. You’re a good boyfriend.” The best one that she’d ever had actually. Not that she’d had a whole lot or anything. No time when you were trying to be one of the first women to fly in the airforce. In any case, she started to eat, trying not to just shove food in her face.
She knew that he was a pretty good cook, so it was nice that she could actually just eat. “So what are you planning for today? Any fun stuff?”
*
Sam shook his head. “Just have some work to do for the center,” he said. “How about you?” It was nice that their jobs here were relatively calm, at least when there weren’t giant monsters attacking, and they could do normal things.
“You know, I’ve been thinking,” he said after pouring coffee for both of them and joining her at the table. “Maybe I’m jumping the gun here, but… what would you think about moving in together?”
*
She shrugged her shoulders. “Um, y’know. Just hanging around I guess? I didn’t really have a whole lot of plans.” Maybe she should have made some. Tried to get to know people. Hang out. That kind of thing. Carol definitely wanted to have some normalcy. That would be nice.
Her head lifted and looked up at him. “Yeah? You want to? I.. wow. Not that it’s a surprise, but I guess it’s a little bit of a surprise. It’s because no one’s ever wanted to live with me before.” She didn’t know if that was a good or a bad thing. Still she was grinning. “Yeah, I think we should move in together. I’d like that.”
*
As soon as the words left his lips, Sam held his breath, hoping that he hadn’t just blown the best relationship he’d had in a long time. He let out a sigh of relief when she grinned and said that she liked the idea.
“Awesome,” he said, his own grin obvious. “Should we use one of our places or ask Tony about something else? Or, I guess we could move out of the tower too.”
*
Carol was just glad that he actually wanted to live with her. She was pretty sure that she was a nightmare to live with, but if he actually wanted to then she couldn’t pass up the opportunity. “Oh my god that is a lot of options. Uh.. I mean, I guess it depends. How much stuff do you want to keep, and how much stuff do I wanna keep? And can we merge all the stuff?”
Moving was complicated, but it wasn’t like she had a lot of stuff here anyway. “To be honest, I don’t have a lot of stuff between like the bed and like .. cooking stuff. Oh and bathroom stuff. And maybe some Star Wars action figures. But y’know.” She shrugged.
*
Laughing, Sam shrugged. “I guess we don’t have to rush anything,” he said. “Though we’re in the proverbial calm between the storms and should probably take advantage of that.” Who knew when the next crisis was going to hit.
“I’ll shoot Tony a message and see what our options are,” he said.
*
Coming up around him, she slipped her arms around him from behind and hugged him tightly. “Oh yeah, let’s definitely avoid all storms and find a nice place before the shit hits the fan again.” She kissed the back of his neck and smiled. This was really nice.
