Darcy was looking forward to spending some time with her bestie away from the hustle and bustle of New York. Ever since New Year’s, her life had been something of a blur and she desperately needed some peace and quiet. New Mexico was a great place to get that, even though she wasn’t sure if she’d ever get used to traveling via magic. It did go much faster than dealing with an airport though, so she wasn’t going to complain.
“Promise me that we don’t have to talk about lawyers or attacks or anything remotely serious for the next couple of days,” she said, flopping down on Jane’s couch in a dramatic fashion. “Because it turns out that being a long lost Stark involves a lot of paperwork.”
*
"I'm all out of paperwork but if you want I can probably find some grant applications for you to fill out for old times sake." Jane sat down next to Darcy, shoving at her legs until Darcy made some room for her.
"Any benefits? An Amex card? Your own helicopter?"
*
“Ugh, you suck,” Darcy said, no heat behind her words as she grabbed a throw pillow and half-heartedly attempted to thwack Jane with it.
She moved her legs long enough for Jane to sit down and then plunked them down on her lap. “Apparently I have a trust fund or something. Lots of money.” Would have been a lot more useful a decade ago when they were struggling to feed themselves with Jane’s jerry-rigged equipment in the desert. “No helicopter.” Not that she needed one.
“Oh, I did get a little sister. That’s kind of cool.” Morgan was cute and Darcy would have fun doing stuff with her.
*
Having Darcy here in New Mexico reminded Jane of those old days. Splurges back then had been pancakes at Izzy's and she'd eaten Spaghetti-O's out of the can more than any grown adult should probably admit. "Morgan seems like a good kid. She's lucky to have you."
*
The old days were good memories, even the bad parts like the alien attacks. That didn’t mean Darcy wasn’t glad that Jane and Thor were finally getting their well deserved happy ever after though. “Yeah, she’s cute and smart as hell. I won’t be surprised if she’s running everything in the future.” With any luck, Morgan would be a benevolent leader.
“Thor’s around right? I was hoping to see him too,” she said.
*
"I sent Thor for takeout. Don't worry, he'll be back and with curry from that takeaway down the street from my mom's place in London. He's going to want your opinion on everything in the place." Jane smiled. "He's very proud."
*
Darcy laughed at the idea that Jane sent her Thunder God boyfriend for international take out. How was this even her life? “I think it’s great,” she said. “You seem really comfortable here.” That was a good thing, as far as she was concerned. “And I assume there’s a lab tucked away nearby?” Even though she knew that Jane could always go back to the New York for that, she knew her friend well enough to know that she would be tinkering nearby too.
*
"I'm still mostly working out of this room and a lot of the equipment is actually being fed data from the New York." Most of the home was the large open space of the renovated service station. The main renovation was adding a bedroom to turn it into a liveable home.
*
“As long as you’re happy,” Darcy said. After everything they’d gone through since first meeting Thor and the recent cancer thing, she was glad that things were calm for Jane. “And as long as you don’t mind me escaping New York occasionally to visit. Especially after the press release about me being Tony’s daughter.” She was hoping the news wouldn’t have much an impact on her day to day life, but she also knew anything was possible.
*
"You're always welcome here," Jane said, patting Darcy's ankle. "I'm good. Thor and I are good. Still trying to figure out work which is...frustrating."
*
It was nice to have a family, even ones who weren’t related by blood, and after everything they’d been through together, Darcy certainly considered Jane to be family. Having a biological family now wasn’t going to change that. “What are you trying to figure out?” she asked. “Can I help? Do we need to make a chart?”
*
Jane laughed. "I appreciate that but it's the same thing as usual. With the added bonus of basically my in laws have not only solved it but they're about to reopen their galactic superhighway while I'm still trying to invent the wheel."
*
Darcy could see where that might be less than fulfilling. “All right, well then, let’s do something fun. How about a movie? Something that does not involve giant monsters destroying things.” They got enough of that in real life.
*
“Sure,” Jane agreed. “Thor will be back with food soon and then we can go out. No working I promise.”
