After Vision disappeared from this universe, Wanda didn't really know how to feel. Depressed, definitely. She knew her light had gone out - because his had too; he was returning to death, to nothingness, to a world that had trudged forward without him. Where she was forced to do the same. Despair? She felt that too. It felt like concrete in her veins. All she had left was a starless sky, no shining moon, not even any clouds. Even so, a small part of her had expected it to happen - nothing good ever lasted for her, so it was bound to fall apart at some point. Everyone said she should take the chance to be with Vision while he was here, yet no one anticipated he'd vanish and she'd be twelve weeks pregnant. But because she was pregnant, that was why she chose to carry on. She cared about something else very deeply, even when her own personal winter was at its darkest - she still had the baby, so, that was what she chose to focus on. Wanda went to her ultrasound appointment as scheduled - she just went alone, with no Vision in the waiting room to share in her excitement or comfort her. It was just her in that waiting room at the Stark Industries clinic, experiencing neverending nausea, and being reminded by her bladder that she had to pee really, really badly. Christine had been explained the situation and she felt nothing but empathy for Wanda. Like before, the cold and sterile clinic had been transformed into a gentle, calming space. It was actually starting to grow on her, and she made a mental note to bring it up with Bruce. In their line of work, any softness was a bonus. Christine poked her head through the door. "Hey Wanda, come on in." The equipment had been purchased a while ago and Christine had been testing it out pretty regularly. It had been a long time since her obstetrics rotation. "I bet you're eager to pee. Do you want to know the gender too? If baby cooperates?" “Yes, very eager,” Wanda agreed, giving Christine a small, quavery smile as she headed back into the examining room. “But - oh. The gender, really? It is not too soon?” She mostly wanted to know that the baby was developing on track, on schedule, and that nothing was wrong. So she’d take any information she could get - obviously she’d never been pregnant before; there wasn’t really any frame of reference for how it all was supposed to go. As she emerged into the second trimester, she only had a list of potential symptoms and experiences gleaned from Google. Apparently this would be the trimester where her libido was through the roof and she had no one to...indulge her. Wonderful. “My brother recently arrived, at least,” she added as she settled on the exam table, sitting on the edge of it until given further instructions. “One person I love leaves and another arrives - that seems to be the pattern.” How she hated this universe sometimes. Christine couldn't comment on the universe's cruelty, as she hadn't really experienced it yet,but she'd seen it in everyone else's eyes. Bucky. Clint. Especially Clint. "12 weeks is generally when we do all of this. If baby doesn't cooperate though, well, you'll have to wait until about 20 week when we do the next one ...that being said, we do have access to all this equipment whenever you want. I can even send you home with one of the handheld dopplers so you can hear baby's heartbeat whenever you want." Maybe that wouldn't make her feel as lonely? Or maybe it would... Motioning Wanda to the table, she gave a soft smile. "Come on. You get yourself settled, and I'll just putter and get organized. There's a gown if you'd rather wear that so you don't have to just drop you pants and be there in your underwear. Your choice." She liked to give Wanda options. “A handheld doppler?” Wanda wasn’t sure - at first, she was hesitant. But then again, with her and Pietro about to move into the Avengers tower, she would be around her friends. The people she called family - and her twin brother, her family by blood and essentially all she had left. They would want to hear the baby’s heartbeat too and get excited with her, wouldn’t they? She began the process of disrobing - taking her dress and leggings off, really, and keeping her flat shoes on. She replaced her ensemble with the gown and got settled on the exam table as requested. “Yes, I think I would like a doppler,” she finally decided. Her auburn hair splayed about her head like a halo, and she gathered it to one side so it wasn’t a mess while she laid there. Then, something else occurred to her. “I hope I don’t pee on you.” Because she really had to go. The thought made her giggle and ugh, she was nervous. That comment deserved a burst of laughter because it'd never happened before, and with Christine's luck, it would today. "I think you'll be fine," Christine reassured the younger woman before beginning the exam. It went fairly smoothly, everything went as well as expected until Christine realized that the heartbeats were slightly off. Knowing better than to say anything, she quietly continued with her exam, suspecting something but not saying anything until she was absolutely correct. And then she was and she wondered how Wanda would handle yet another shock. When it was finished, she sent Wanda to the bathroom while Christine mulled over the new information. This was ..huge. Well. Super huge. Like how big Wanda was about to get .. oh god, the jokes were starting. No Christine, stay professional, she told herself. Once Wanda was back on the table, bladder emptied, Christine smiled and moved the screen towards Wanda, motioning her to get back into position. Now that all the important sizing was complete, Christine could show Wanda everything else. "Well, I have some not so good news and good news. The not so good news? I can't tell you gender because the babies aren't cooperating. And that's your good news, by the way: babies. Looks like you're having twins!" Fortunately, Wanda did not pee on Christine. That really would not have been a nice thing to do a doctor friend helping her out, so, she willed her bladder to behave and was grateful to get a chance to use the restroom when it was all said and done. Unfortunately, she wasn’t really expecting the news about twins so the only sound she made for a moment was a confused hiccup. What? Her immediate thought was that it had to be the work of the literal, actual dark presence that was currently using her as some kind of incubator - her second thought was simply just her being overwhelmed, but she was used to that by now. Nothing ever went how it was supposed to, in her life. “Oh,” she blinked owlishly. “I...well, I am a twin. I guess that makes sense.” That was all she could say. Internally, she was kind of screaming. Poor Wanda. Christine couldn't blame her. One baby was enough but the idea of two? Christine was never so happy that she'd never wanted children. "Yeah, it's actually very common for twins to have twins. Something in the genetics ... are you okay? Do you need some water? Or to sit up?" “I will be fine,” Wanda promised, and she would be. She always was. Mostly, she was just glad that Pietro was here now - she needed the support her other half could provide; no doubt it would be a similar relationship, for her own twins. They would love each other wholly, connected somehow - the yin and the yang to make that perfect balance. Water sounded good and yet it didn’t because she’d just have to pee again (it all went through her quick as lightning these days) so she decided on another course of action. “Can I hear their heartbeats?” she asked, hoping that she’d be able to. Christine didn't answer. Instead, she put the wand back on Wanda's abdomen, and turned up the dial on the machine. Soon, there was the sound of heartbeats echoing through the machine, beating rapidly. "It always astounds me," she said, slowly moving the wand to find the best (and loudest) "how fast little babies' hearts beat. If this was an adult, I'd be prescribing heart medicines and be worried about vascular explosions." She also found the best picture she could. LIttle beans showed up on the screen, just small enough to be there, but not big enough for the full baby shape. "When we go to 20 weeks, you'll be able to get the picture that everyone wants to see. It's a little bit more than an egg sac right now. Cute though, hey?" She pointed to one shape. "We'll call that Baby A and.....this one Baby B. Unless you want to go with other letters or numbers. I'm flexible. It's really just so we can keep track of the information." Wanda was fascinated, watching with rapt attention, her sky blue gaze fixated on the screen. “Vascular explosion,” she snorted a laugh and, hey, that made her giggle a little and cut through the sheer shock that had settled over her. “They are very cute. Baby A and Baby B works well for me.” She honestly didn’t know what else to call them - Bean 1 and Bean 2? Twinsies? That was too schmoopy, she wasn’t the type. But hearing those heartbeats, knowing she had twins and actually seeing them, small as they were? That was indescribable. “Thanks, Christine,” she added softly, since the doctor had been very supportive throughout all of this. "No problem, Wanda." Christine pushed a few more buttons and took out several print outs, marking the top with A and B before handing them to Wanda. "I look forward to doing this again with you in a few weeks and you know, we could even do a 3D picture. After all -- with Tony Stark footing the bill, we can have whatever want." Normally, she wouldn't be this fiscally irresponsible but frick -- Tony bought her all the obstetric equipment she needed so was she going to care? Nope. "You're going to be a great mom, Wanda. You got this. You do." |
