Wanda hadn’t said much on the way home from the clinic. After Christine told her she was pregnant, she clammed up and only managed to mumble to Vision that she would go over things when they got back to their apartment. She had an inkling this was why she’d been feeling ill lately, the faintest little glimmer of it in the back of her mind when the days ticked by and still no period - mostly she told herself it couldn’t be possible, but a woman knew her own body best. And a woman knew when something was happening to her body as well. She unlocked the door and dropped her purse on the floor, sinking into the couch cushions and not even waiting a moment before she put her face into her hands and began sobbing. Loud, shoulder-shaking sobs too - this would likely cause all of Vision’s systems to go into hyper overdrive and worry him into a comatose state or something, but she just needed to let it all out. Her anxiety was looping around and around in her mind, a carousel on fire, there was no room for anything else. Except for the stupid thought that once she told him, he’d assume she had cheated on him and leave - she needed him to not leave, and she needed to get ahold of herself but that was also decidedly difficult. Needless to say, Vision had been on high alert ever since they left the doctor’s office. Wanda was quiet and pale and didn’t seem to want to talk about it, which led him to start trying to narrow down all the possibilities and worst case scenarios, one by one in his mind - at least then he might be better prepared to help. He’d never felt the type of crippling fear he did now, and it was jarring. He was terrified that something was truly wrong with the woman he loved, terrified that after all they had been through; he might lose her again. All he could do was keep her hand in his on the way back to the apartment. When she sank into the couch and burst into tears, all of that careful planning he’d done in his head was a lost cause. He was at her side immediately, crouching down in front of her as she wept. He didn’t say anything for a few moments, just ran his hands comfortingly up and down her arms; then drew her close to him on the couch, holding her as he wished desperately that he had a way to help - to make things better, to reassure her. “Wanda,” he urged gently, once the majority of her sobs had died down. “Please tell me what the doctor said.” Wanda was a limp noodle in Vision’s arms - her limbs just felt heavy, she was tired (what else was new), and she had a headache that was like an iron band garroting her skull. “Do you promise you won’t leave?” she asked, hiccuping in between her words - she felt small and ridiculous, a lost girl desperately clinging to such an important fragment of her soul. It wasn’t worth anything without him - it didn’t work right without him, nothing did. She placed her hands on his shoulders, sliding up to press to the sides of his face as she continued to quietly sob, sniffling, nose red and her cheeks blotchy. Surely she had looked better in her life - but as this pregnancy went on, no doubt she would be thinking that a lot. “I need you to promise.” He brushed away some of the tears from her cheeks with the backs of his knuckles, gently and carefully. She looked so frightened, so worried. He didn’t know what could possibly cause such a reaction, but his mind went to all of the worst incurable sorts of illnesses. It was a struggle to wrench his focus away from those horrible fears, but he did; she needed him present and steady right now and that’s what he would be. “Of course,” he said softly. “I will not leave, I’m right here. I promise, I will stay,” he vowed. As if anything could have torn him away from her at the moment. The concept was utterly confusing, but with the way her voice sounded; it was clear this was something she needed to hear him say aloud. And he meant it - no matter what she told him, he wouldn’t leave. His place was at her side, nothing could change that. She was his fiance after all, they hadn’t had a ceremony yet, but that made little difference. In his mind, this was his wife, his partner; he was hopelessly in love with her and was devoted to having a life with her. He hoped desperately that the next words that came out of her mouth had nothing to do with something incurable. “I didn’t - first off, it’s not what you think,” Wanda started. “You know about what happened with the...whatever I’m tainted with.” The black sludge, the demonic presence, the entity that had found a home within her - even if she tried to have an abortion, she was nearly certain that the presence wouldn’t allow for such a thing. It had very clearly fought back when Stephen tried to get magical hands on it and remove it from her. Not that she wanted to have an abortion - oddly enough, despite her worry and fears and anxiety, she was hoping they could save this baby. “The doctor...Christine...she said I’m pregnant,” Wanda finally admitted. “I wasn’t with anyone else, I swear.” Now she was babbling, back to crying - honestly, she was terrified Vision wouldn’t believe her even though he was better than that. Of course he would believe her, but still. Vision believed her, because well, he always did. She didn’t typically lie, and he trusted her implicitly. But what she had just said might very well have caused him to have a heart attack, if such a thing was physically possible. He froze completely, as about a thousand different reactions happened all at once. He hadn’t been around that long, and was still getting the hang of what it was like to feel one emotion at a time. Right now there were multiples - fear, shock, hope, confusion, and a couple others he couldn’t have named if he tried. He shook his head a little, like it would clear anything up. It didn’t. And she was crying again, which pained him to see. She was clearly distraught by this entire experience and he was just sitting there silently, like an absolute fool. “Of course I believe you,” he clarified, his voice sounding a little far off as he struggled to process this piece of information. He reached out to smooth her hair away from her face. “I… don’t see how this is possible?” Physically, it wasn’t. Which mean there had to be another explanation. He didn’t understand how any of this was happening, but then again they knew very little about the substance that had gotten on her from the entity they fought. Was it somehow responsible, and if so how? Among all those emotions he was feeling, fear kicked back into the forefront as he realized this might cause a significant risk to her health. Finally, finally, Wanda got ahold of herself - well, she was still utterly terrified and on the precipice of being sick, but she had stopped crying at least. She reached for a tissue from the box on the side table and blew her nose. “I don’t know how it’s possible either,” she said. “Christine was saying things about prenatals and ultrasounds and I told her about you, but I don’t think she really...got it.” The doctor just thought it was a normal pregnancy - likely she’d talk to Stephen about it and he’d fill her in. Wanda also hoped that Christine would still want to be her medical doctor. She felt awkward going to Bruce, given the less than stellar history between them - it was all years ago, but regardless. “It has to be because of the...demon,” she added. “Demons have magic, powerful magic. But whatever it is, it obviously wants me to have this baby, so - it won’t hurt me, I don’t think. We just have to find a way to separate it from the baby.” The demon wanted her to have the baby. That statement alone took a while to fully settle in Vision’s mind. Everything felt discombobulated, like one of his systems had malfunctioned and started spinning elaborate but false details about his environment. But he knew that wasn’t the case. Everything else was functioning just fine, no alarm bells or glitches. This was real, this was happening. “Of all the things that could have resulted from that mission, I did not… think this would be it,” he said, completely dumbfounded. He stood and walked to the kitchen in a daze, filled up a glass of water and returned; handing it to Wanda. Demon entity or not, if she was indeed pregnant; he was going to be in caretaker hyper protective mode until they could actually figure this situation out. He wanted to make sure she was comfortable as possible and had everything she needed. “How much risk is involved - will it be very dangerous to attempt to separate the entity from the child?” he asked, sitting down next to her on the couch again. Then, before giving her a chance to answer; another question popped into his mind - “Is it… how do you feel about this?” he asked, stroking his palm along her arm. Was she happy to hear the news? Filled with dread? Fear? He was filled with all of the above and then some, but what she was going through right now was more important - given that it was her body that was affected. Wanda took the glass of water and gulped it all - she was thirstier than she thought, but that made sense given the fact that she’d just shed an ocean’s worth of salty tears. As she drank, she was reminded that she’d have to consider everything she put into her body now, everything she was around - her pregnancy was still in its early stages, the baby not even really a baby yet and likely the size of a pea, but she would still be mindful of her health. She was determined to be. She slumped against Vision, leaning into his side. “I don’t know how dangerous removing a dark presence would be,” she confessed. “Stephen has been trying to figure it out.” Of course, a pregnancy was not something he expected, she was sure - so he’d have to redirect and refocus on some things. Some spells probably weren’t safe to be performed on or by an expectant woman. “I feel like - well, weren’t we just talking about children?” she asked, looking up at Vision with watery pale blue eyes. “This is your child.” Maybe demon magic had a hand in causing her to conceive, but a demon wasn’t its father - Vision was, if he wanted to be. “It’s ours, together - I’ll do anything to save it. I’m not afraid.” Maybe she was a little afraid, but overall that didn’t compare to the love of a mama bear and the sacrifices she would make. Motherhood wasn’t for everyone, yet Wanda felt it was right for her - her choice was to do this, all the way. “Is it truly mine?” he asked, feeling the first flickers of hope begin to grow. There was wonderment in his voice, but he was still somewhat reluctant, given how little they knew about what was causing this and the entity itself. He knew how strong and resilient Wanda was, though part of him was filled with fears of what would happen if they couldn’t separate the entity from the child, and what if the child wound up with all the malevolent traits of said entity… there was a lot there to process. Still, he couldn’t help but hope in spite of all the risks and uncertainties involved. It was true - they had recently had a heartfelt discussion about wanting kids. A discussion that ended with the sad realization that although they both wanted a family, it would not be in their future. Now though, for whatever reason; that was about to change. “It is hard to fathom that we could be given a chance like this,” he said quietly, tugging her closer against his side. “I am still very concerned about the safety of both you and… our child,” he had to pause there, because saying those words felt almost unreal. “But I cannot help but feel this is nothing short of a miracle,” he said with a soft smile. “I will do everything I can to ensure that both of you are protected and taken care of,” he promised, kissing her temple. “We’ll figure this out.” “Of course it’s yours,” Wanda smiled a bit, patting Vision’s knee. “I told you that being a father is more than simply the biology.” Any deadbeat could blow their load into a woman and get her pregnant, but it was what he did afterward that mattered. Vision would be a great father, if nothing else she was certain of that. She supposed that he was right, that they’d figure this out - her moods were all over the place though, so she couldn’t promise she’d be stable throughout everything. “I apologize in advance if I get too whiplash about things,” she chuckled. “I’ve never been pregnant before. I think it does a lot of crazy things.” Swollen ankles and bigger breasts (well, maybe he’d appreciate that, at least - she had always been pretty average-sized in that department) and odd cravings and being unable to sleep when you were the size of a walrus. Lots to look forward to. He smiled warmly at her reassuring words. It was something he didn’t realize he needed to hear; but he did. Vision reached out to take her hand, kissing her palm, then sliding his opposite hand atop her belly, still amazed that all of this was happening. “I may have trouble keeping up with the shifting emotions, but I will try my best,” he said with a smile. “If I’m not getting something that is obvious though, feel free to shout at me,” he teased. He’d had a few years of watching and interacting not only with Wanda, but other humans; so he was more comfortable now with his ability to comprehend what certain emotions meant. And he’d experienced them himself, as well. That would help, but pregnancy and it’s various effects on human physiology was definitely new territory. He was certain they would figure it out together though, and they were fortunate enough to have a skilled team of friends and doctors helping them out. “There will be changes, yes, but fortunately you have a fiance who does not require sleep or food; so I will be happy to help make those changes as comfortable as possible for you,” he reassured. He would need to do some research, he realized; when it came to reading up about what to expect. “Have you noticed any changes so far? Beyond just the nausea,” he said. Wanda couldn’t help but laugh a little. “I may have trouble keeping up with the shifting emotions too, so we can handle it together,” she said. “I haven’t noticed much as of now though. Just being tired a lot. And nauseated - food is...tricky.” She was hungry, but everything made her stomach feel like it was on a tilt-a-whirl so it was difficult to find something that appealed. “I guess I pee a lot more too.” And her breasts hurt - apparently that was one of the early signs of pregnancy, which she should have picked up on. However, she’d try not to talk much about her increased peeing but likely it would be inevitable because wherever she and Vision went, she’d need to know where the bathroom was. Sigh. “I’ll keep you updated,” she teased, hand framing his face and stroking his cheek before she leaned in to kiss him. “Te iubesc.” “Te iubesc,” he repeated, returning the kiss with a sigh against her lips. I love you too. He sank back into the couch as if a massive weight had been lifted from him, gently tugging her with him so that he could hold her close against his chest. “I apologize in advance for being over protective,” he said with a small chuckle; knowing that he was likely to hover for the foreseeable future. He felt such a mixture of excitement and concern. He was still reeling from the news, and figured Wanda was as well. Fortunately, they had some time before they would officially meet their child to figure everything out. Most importantly - how to remove the dark entity that still resided within her. Wanda trusted Dr Strange to be able to find a way to do so, so Vision would try to take some comfort in that. “Bed?” he asked after a few comfortably quiet moments passed. She tended to sleep longer, and go to bed earlier - both symptoms he hoped were simply a result of the pregnancy, and not of the entity interfering with her health in some way. “I could use a nap,” Wanda decided, and it was true - she had a feeling she would be taking cat naps very frequently as time went on. All of this was new to her (and Vision as well) but she would look forward to the future and hope that their family would happily grow - without anything demonic in the picture. |
