Sam and Sif -- Quebec, Canada

Neither one of them would win any acting awards, but Sam figured no one was paying that close of attention to them. Or at least he hoped they weren't. There were probably some kind of surveillance measures in place and with any luck, they'd be video only.

Sam followed Sif, also stepping carefully, and frowned at the shoe print. "What a lovely view," he said, just in case anyone was listening. Then he tapped the communicator he was wearing to ask T'Challa to fly the drone a little closer to see if there were more footprints leading in a particular direction, keeping his voice pitched as low as possible.

"This might be a wonderful place to take photographs," he said, his voice returning to normal. "Let's see if there are any obstructions around."

"Yes, let's get as many photos as we can," Sif agreed in something more like her normal voice: no-nonsense and brusque, but not hostile to Sam. It was more as though she assumed his competence.

She moved around the edges of the building with the grace of a large, dangerous cat, careful to stay in sight of Sam even as she advanced. It would do no good to be caught in a trap that her partner couldn't see. And for all that she wasn't wearing her armor or carrying blade and shield here, she was ready for anything. Several knives were concealed about her person as well as a Midgardian weapon that she had no intention of using.

"All clear this side," she told Sam, for all that she was sure his cameras could see the same. "I have a skeleton key for the door, should it take such. If it's a computer code or a fingerprint, we'll deal with it."

"I'm no Tony Stark, but I can manage a little hacking," Sam said. He did have a gun tucked in a holster against the small of his back, but he was hoping not to need it. If he hadn't been partnered up with a literal goddess, he would have had a lot more issue with the whole undercover part of this operation.

He scanned the area, his glasses transmitting what he saw back to HQ even as they fed him the images from his drone. "We're good," he said with a nod, encouraging her to continue forward.

Sif tried the door, which was definitely locked and had a visible plate for the key. The skeleton key was successful, as far as she could tell; at least it opened the door and she ushered Sam in quickly, closing but not locking the door behind them. It looked, as far as she could tell, like a standard if somewhat low-tech Midgardian office. Low-tech because there was a lot of paper on the premises, both on the desk with the computer and probably in the filing cabinets. A map of the park on the wall and a narrow table with park brochures completed the illusion.

"Is this right?" Sif asked Sam, because she knew she couldn't judge.

Sam scanned the room. It appeared to be fine, but he knew that appearances could be deceiving. "Doesn't look like anything," he said.

And clearly he spoke too soon because no sooner were the words out than he heard something and turned to identify the sound. It took a moment, but one of the file cabinets in the corner had started almost vibrating. That was most definitely not normal.

"That is not right," he said, gesturing in that direction.

Sif's reflex was to shield the mortal behind her but without anything to hand, she merely gestured to him to stay back while she approached. If it was going to explode, she'd risk it.

And explode it did, or at least let loose the metal drawers toward Sif and Sam. There was only one direction they could go, which let Sif dodge them easily; nor, she imagined, would Sam have any trouble behind her.

That was when the remainder of the former file cabinet stood up. It was about eight feet tall and had four arms, which had been wrapped around the drawers.

Sif grinned.

That... was certainly not something Sam was expecting to see. He really wished he had his wings, but since he didn't, he pulled out his gun and took aim at the... thing once he'd successfully dodged the flying metal drawers. Every time he thought his life couldn't get weirder, it did.

He assumed that the creature was guarding what they were here to retrieve, so he fired a shot at one of the arms, attempting to distract it long enough for Sif to get in and grab what they came for.

Sif had really been expecting Sam to do the grabbing and her to do the fighting, but a glance back at his posture told her that she was on point for grabbing the--thing in the middle of its chest, oh great. She cursed loudly and picked up an office chair, which she snapped across a desk to break into something resembling a shield. Fortunately for Sif the place was old enough that chair actually had metal components, like the drawer, instead of being made of plastic. That was handy when the thing tried to land a fist on her head and it clanged off the back of the chair.

"Do you see it, comrade?" she asked, while blocking another stroke from the thing. trying to get out of the way of its body so Sam could get a good look at the thing in the middle of its chest.

Her best bet, she thought, was going to be to bind one of its arms and then grab the motivating device. She suspected it would collapse once its mechanical heart was destroyed.

"On the left," Sam called, shooting again and taking care not to let Sif get caught in the crossfire. There was something glowing oddly on that side and he assumed it was what they were looking for. If not, then he had no idea what this creature was doing.

He moved in closer so he could offer more assistance, even though his weapons were better used at a distance. After this was over, he was going to need to work on his hand to hand skills.

Seeing Sam come up on the left, as he'd called, Sif moved out of the way of his approach. She went on the attack before he got close enough for it to swing at him, grabbing one of its arms and bending it round so it couldn't reach Sam easily, and doing the same with the other. It started trying to kick at her, but it was so preoccupied with freeing itself that it was open to Sam's assault.

Sam took advantage of the opening Sif provided and managed to grab the item they were here to retrieve. "Got it!" he said, taking a step back and firing a couple more rounds into the thing's... well, he had no idea what the anatomy really was, but aiming for center mass was usually a safe bet. "Let's get the hell out of here."

"Go, go!" Sif urged him. "I'll guard the retreat!"

But with the device that Sam had pulled out of it gone, the machine, or robot, or whatever it was, quickly lost its motivating force. Its speed decreaed until it was frozen in place. "I think we can leave this for Fury to clean up," she told Sam. "Now all we have to do is get out of here without alerting the geese."

Not for the first time, Sam really wished he had his wings. They would make retreat so much easier.

He radioed in that they were successful and heading back to the drop point. With any luck, the geese wouldn't make that more difficult than it needed to be. He slipped the... hard drive? or whatever it was, in his pocket and then held his arm out to Sif. It was unlikely that they would need to maintain their cover at this point, but he figured better safe than sorry.

"Let's get the hell out of here."

"They are sacred geese, we must not fight them," Sif whispered to herself as a reminder, and opened the door. The creatures were gathered around the door, watching them, malice that Sif could feel in their hard eyes.

She let Sam take the lead, asking the All-Father, even though he was no longer with them, to guide her path, to keep the kinfolk of his ravens from acting against her and Sam.

Sacred or not, Sam wouldn't hesitate to take out the geese if that's what they needed to do to get out of here and back to their ride. Luckily, they had support from above and his drone flew in, causing enough of a distraction for the geese that they were able to slip back through the park with little difficulty.

He breathed a sigh of relief when they were finally clear. "Well. That was... fun."

Sif offered her hand in a warrior's clasp. "Well fought, Sam son of Will. It has been an honor to serve by your side. Now let us show the King and Fury our prize."

It took him a moment to understand what she meant by 'son of Will' and Sam decided it wasn't worth trying to explain, so he grasped her hand and nodded. "And let's hope we never have to deal with geese again," he agreed.
