Who: Tony and Bruce
What: Science Bros catching up and doing mad science.
When: After Jane's hospitalization
Rating: it's not easy being green?

Tony was on the top floor of the new Stark Industry building, in his private lab. It wasn't a quiet place unless real work was in progress, and until Bruce arrived, Tony was listening to music and drinking coffee. Several holo screens were surrounding him and he was going through his files and specs, looking through all of the files that Friday brought up from his research projects.

He already told Friday to let Bruce in through the security door after the elevator dropped him off on that floor. All they were waiting for was Bruce's arrival.

Before he forgot, "Friday, text Pep and tell her I'm gonna be home hella late? Bruce and I have this cancer thing we're working on."

"Right away, boss," the AI answered, promptly sending a text to that man stealing hussy Ms. Potts that said:

    > Mr. Stark and Dr. Banner are working on a cure for Dr. Foster's cancer. He will return once they have conquered nanomedicine, or whenever he needs clean clothes.

It was a text that was both snarky and the truth.

After dropping by the hospital and looking over Jane's chart, Bruce headed to the new Stark Industry building. He'd stopped by a coffee shop on the way to pick up a large coffee, knowing that he and Tony were likely to pull an all nighter working on this project. It wouldn't be the first time and this was a hell of a lot more important than the things they usually did in the lab.

Also far less likely to involve unleashing a murderous AI on the world.

He was only a little startled when Friday greeted him upon arrival and guided him to the top floor and right through security. He hadn't realized that Tony replaced JARVIS nor was he used to the tech after all his time away from Earth.

"I brought some brownies," he said, tossing a bag on the counter as he looked around to orient himself to the workspace.

It was quiet for a moment before Tony turned in place, tearing himself away from the information splashed all around him.

"Classic comfort food," Tony said, eyeing the brownies on the counter. "Before I wallow and make sweet science with you, are these chock full of reefer madness? Are we at that stage where we're actually into mellow jazz, bongo drums, a huge bag of weed? Because it's legal in places now. The big guy's green. Code Green. The world's never under attack from violent hippies. It'd make sense."

Tony couldn't help but smile at seeing Bruce again. So much so that he ignored Bruce's elbow room and patted a hand on his shoulder, without a trace of fear. As usual.

"It's good seeing you again. Hope you didn't end up busting a wizard's roof or anything."

Bruce couldn't help but chuckle at Tony's question. It was good to see that Tony was Tony in every universe. "Regular brownies," he said. "Picked them up when I grabbed coffee." Oddly enough, he'd never thought about trying to keep the Hulk at bay with pot. Might be something to think about when he had some down time, though at the moment getting the Other Guy out was the issue, not keeping him contained.

"No, ended up on a street corner. Strange found me right away, gave me the rundown on what was going on, and made me a cup of tea." The wizard was a little odd, but had proven to be a solid ally and seemed like a decent enough guy. Bruce was glad that he'd run into someone familiar.

It didn't even phase him when Tony touched his shoulder, a testament to how comfortable he was with the other man. "I reviewed Dr. Foster's records. What have you got so far?"

It felt like a missing piece of a puzzle was put back in place, much to Tony's relief. He smiled and nodded, before taking a few brisk steps over to where the non-medicated treats were. As he was reaching in for a brownie, the mention of Strange brokered some acknowledgment.

"Oh right, Strange. Mystic asshole. He magics up a decent cup of medium roast. Not as good as the Javabot I had installed. Just tell Friday what you want and it's insta-roasted."

He gestured over to a wall of coffee machine. Rich boys and their toys. Speaking of toys, Tony was all too ready to launch right into work mode.

"If you reviewed her case, you know that it's gotten aggressive. I'm not a doctor and I've gathered that much. So Pep and I made some calls, and we got files for you. Latest genetics and immunotherapy are in there. Strange has a doctor friend, Dr. Palmer I believe, who's involved with Foster's case now. We can consult with her. And I've been working on a delivery system using...you guessed it...nanobots."

Tony made a grand gesture, brownie in one hand, so a three dimensional holograph popped up in front of them. It depicted the nanobots inside of a blood stream, targeting and latching onto immature or abnormal leukocytes, delivering doses of medicine and transmitting data.

"Helen Cho said that there's probably a way to alter the genetics using nano-robotics as a delivery system. Great! But tinkering with genetic coding would take time. We need something soon. Something that lets the chemo balance things out without knocking her out in the process. There's a way to make them from a biodegradable algae too. Harmless to the human body. I drink some if it every morning."

Tony took a big bite of brownie and checked his smart watch, chewing and swallowing quickly.

"Oh, just so you know? I gotta be ready to bolt since Pep's got our bun in the oven. She's past the due date. So don't get mad if I have to bail? I have panic alarms all over the penthouse. And on her wristwatch. If she sneezes more than once, I'm gonna know about it."

"Wait, what?" Bruce said, looking away from the screens and blinked at Tony in confusion. "Pepper is pregnant? When did that happen?" He was pretty sure he would have noticed that when he saw her back in their version of New York, even though it had been brief.

He took a big gulp of his coffee and picked up a brownie. If he was going to be tinkering with genetic code, he needed all the sugar and caffeine he could get.

"Last year," Tony said with a proud smirk. "Things happened, time got borked, she's due. I'm glad that I don't have to do the whole birds and bees talk with you. That'd get embarrassing. We're getting married afterward. June 1st. Your invite is....on my desk, I think."

Tony began chomping down on the rest of that brownie and turning the nanobots in place with his free hand, his eyes bright with possibilities. Even more so now that Bruce was back.

It didn't surprise Bruce that they were having a kid before getting married. When did Tony ever do things the way that society expected? Still, it kind of stung to hear that Tony was going to be a dad when it was something Bruce knew he'd never get to experience. He thought he'd made his peace with that, but those conversations with Natasha back on Clint's farm felt like they just happened yesterday.

"Congratulations," he said, shoving aside his thoughts for now. He needed to focus on the nanobots and figuring out a way to get Jane Foster well, not dwell on things that were going to make him melancholy.

He took a bite of his own brownie as he continued to read through the information that Tony put up on the screens. "Do we have any samples of Jane's blood to work with?" he asked. "If not, how soon can we get it?" That would be necessary if they were going to tie this to her genetics.

That was why Tony was breezing past it. He knew it needed to be mentioned to Bruce, one of his closest friends. It cut down on the surprise! factor if he needed a paper bag to breathe in while he ran like hell to the roof so he could fly off at top speed, rattling all the windows.

"We can probably get some. Right away. Friday, fax over some request forms," he said aloud, moving over to get his coffee when the disembodied female told him it would be done right away. "I think if you work on targeting it with the blood sample, and I start finishing the delivery method and programming, we can have this knocked out by, what...end of the week?"

In Tony's mind, as long as Bruce was there, they could cure cancer and power the planet for a thousand lifetimes. Zero pollution too. And maybe have time to turn him into a Transformer. Neat.

Bruce reached up to flip through some of the information in front of him before responding to Tony's question. "Hmm, maybe next week," he said. It seemed like a straight forward enough problem to solve and he knew that he and Tony always worked well together. Plus, they had good motivation for getting this project done as soon as possible.

"I can start working on the sequencing without the blood, but it'll be generic until I see her samples."

"Workable time table. I better text Pep since she's got this whole weird conspiracy thing about Friday."

Tony shrugged, not sure what that was about. What he was sure of, was that Jane needed help and that Bruce would keep working if he needed to leave for home or a twenty minute catnap on the office couch.

"While you're on that, I'll start on test models," he said. "Once we get enough data for something the computer simulations think are safe-ish, I'm the best guinea pig we have. Technically? They're already in me. Hey, I've fallen off the low carb wagon today. You want anything else to go with those brownies? I can order a pizza."

Coffee, brownies, and pizza. A classic late night in the lab comfort combo. He'd jog it off later. Along with that pint of Stark Raving Hazelnuts that he ate a couple of days ago.

"Pizza sounds good," Bruce said absently, his mind already focused on the problem in front of him. He would much prefer to focus on a potentially solvable scientific puzzle than think too much about being in an alternate dimension. And there was no way he was about to ask what Tony meant by Pepper having a conspiracy about his AI.

Once they solved this problem, he figured he could go grocery shopping and pick up whatever he needed to outfit his kitchen so he could prepare his own healthier meals.

"I'll get Lombardi's," Tony said while looking over Bruce's half of the puzzle. He headed over to his side of the lab to tackle the other half and to order the pizza. He knew that Bruce was still new to this and that pushing to talk about it right now was probably a bad idea right off the bat.

Having Pepper there with him helped a lot. Bruce didn't have that support other than making googly eyes at Natasha, before he disappeared into outer space. That whole thing with Natasha was something he wasn't sure he should ask about. What Tony did know for sure, was it helped to keep busy from day one. It helped having things to design, to build, and to keep his hands busy. It kept him from going off the deep end into Crazyville.

And if any place might qualify as Crazyville Central, it was finding out that you're in an alternate universe.
