This was not how Sam imagined it all ending. They fought like hell and still couldn't get the upper hand against that ugly grape bastard. It really sucked that it took something like this to get the team back together, or what passed for the team being back together, after the mess with the Accords. The fact that they were losing made it suck even more. It took a moment for him to realize what was happening, but it seemed like as soon as he did, it happened in the blink of an eye. One minute, he was there and solid and alive and the next, he was turning into dust.

Sam's next moment of awareness found him standing in the middle of a familiar room though it took him longer than he cared to admit to place it. Why did the afterlife look like a room in Stark Tower? "Uh... hello?" he called, uncertain what was going on and unsure what he was supposed to do right now. If he was dead, why was he here? And if he wasn't dead, how? And why? And still why was he here?

On rare occasions, he wished that he hadn't been home when Steve and Natasha ended up on his doorstop. His life had been just fine before he'd gotten caught up in all of this shit. Deep down, he knew that he wouldn't trade it for anything though.

Pepper felt like a beached whale. A bloated, puffy and hideous beached whale. She couldn't get comfortable, had to pee close to every half hour...and she really didn't want to talk about the time Tony's kid had stretched against her bladder, thank you very much. Fortunately, whenever Tony couldn't be right there with her Happy was. Today, the fortune smiled on someone other than Pepper.

While Pepper was poking around in the kitchen Happy got an alert on the internal comms. It was only a yellow alert, meaning something happened that required attention but not in the guns blazing way. He went to a vid screen in the closest wall, poked at it a few times then called Pepper's name. She joined him with a bag of baby carrots and a tub of whipped cream for dipping only to shove both at Happy when she got a look at the screen. "Call Stephen. And Steve. Not Tony. Not yet. I'll handle this." Then before he could protest Pepper waddled into the elevator and poked the appropriate floor button.

Tony must have programmed some kind of protocol into Friday about things like this. The bitch wasn't giving Pepper a hard time about getting to the right floor. She had a smile on her face as she stepped out of the elevator to approach Sam on puffy bare feet, her hands absentmindedly rubbing her swollen belly.

"Mr. Wilson," she said. "Welcome to Stark Tower. I'm Pepper Potts."

Sam recognized Pepper before she introduced herself, though it took him a moment because he never saw her pregnant before. "Uh, yeah, I know," he said, walking over and holding out his hand. "Call me Sam. Please."

Seeing Tony Stark's girl didn't answer any of the many questions running through his mind at the moment, especially since he was fairly certain it would have hit the news if they were expecting a baby.

"Can you tell me how I got here?" he asked. That seemed like the more important question, at least to start.

Pepper never assumed people knew who she was when they first showed up, what with everyone coming from vastly different times. Her smile lifted as she shook Sam's hand. "Then call me Pepper."

He had that look in his eyes of WTF just happened, but Sam at least seemed to have it more together than most.

"Well," she said as she gestured toward a couple of nearby chairs that looked new and comfortable. "That's kind of complicated and not. Dr. Strange usually does this, but he's either busy with someone else or he's in denial." Either was a good guess. Happy was supposed to be calling him now.

With one hand on her stomach and the other as leverage on the arm of the chair, Pepper wrinkled her nose as she lowered herself into the chair. "It seems the Time stone...is that the green one? I'm not really sure myself. Or maybe one of the others. I don't know. But one of them brought you here. What's the last thing you remember?"

"Right before I found myself here, I was in Wakanda," Sam said. He was hardly an expert on the stones, but if the Time stone was involved, that meant he might be dealing with time travel, so he wasn't sure how much he should actually say about what happened.

He waited until she was settled in a chair to sit down. "Strange... that's the wizard guy?" There hadn't been a whole lot of time to chat when Bruce joined them though he remembered thinking the name was appropriate.

There were a lot of other questions Sam wanted to ask, but he wasn't sure how much to say. Plus he knew that it was inappropriate to ask a woman about a pregnancy.

"Ah." She'd heard this tale before. Well. Tony had told her about things. It wasn't fun, and if Sam had been on the really not fun part of things then it was no wonder he was a bit discombobulated. He was handling it better than some, though.

"Yes. Dr. Strange. Don't let his antisocial tendencies spook you. He's actually really nice." And Stephen would probably give her a look for saying that.

"Let me see if I can get this right." Pepper shifted on her chair. Honestly, nothing was comfortable anymore. "This reality isn't your reality. Nor mine, really. I don't know if anyone we know is actually from here. It's the same, but different. Different events. Things like that. The point is you aren't alone in the weird."

Ever since meeting Steve Rogers, the weird was pretty much a constant in Sam's life so he nodded at Pepper's explanation even though the idea of multiple realities was a little over his head.

"Banner mentioned him," he said. "We didn't get much of a chance to talk though. Too busy fighting off Thanos's lackeys." Not that they'd been successful. "So, uh, Tony's around, I'm guessing?" It was an educated guess, given that they were in Stark tower and Pepper looked like she was ready to pop. "Who else?"

"I hope so." Pepper chuckled as both hands came to rest on her round tummy. "Otherwise, this would be really difficult to explain." She smiled with that expectant mom glow. "Yes. Tony's here. Steve. Wanda. Natasha. Jane and oh!" She reached over to touch Sam's hand. "Peggy Carter. Steve's over the moon. It's adorable."

"Dr. Strange. Thor. Loki. What's left of the Asgardians." She continued as she ticked names off on her fingers. "Peter Parker. Peter Quill. What is it with the Peter names?"

Sam chuckled. He hadn't wanted to assume, but was glad to have the confirmation that she was carrying Tony's child, even if the idea of Tony Stark as a father was more surreal than being in an alternate universe.

"Don't think I know either of the Peters," he said. "But it'll be good to see the others." Maybe not Loki, but since Pepper didn't sound alarmed about his presence, he wouldn't worry too much yet. "When are you due?" He was no expert, but it looked like soon was the answer.

Pepper looked down at her tummy with a wrinkle of her nose. "Last Monday." She chuckled. "They tell me that the first baby is always late, but for once I kinda understand Tony's go, go, go approach to things. The sooner I have this baby the faster I regain control of my own body again." Seriously, the risk of peeing unexpectedly was keeping her inside.

Just then a small ring of fire formed above the small table between their chairs. Dr. Strange's gloved hand shot through to place what Pepper recognized as the Welcome Packet on the table. It retreated then the ring closed.

"Yep," Pepper said with a sigh. "He's busy. Someone else must have shown up who might not be taking the transition well." She picked up the packet to hold it out to Sam. "Apartment address and keys. Bank account. Honestly, I'm not sure how much Tony puts in there, but there's talk of getting the Avengers back together for a reunion tour so there's that. Phone. Uber account. I think. Pretty much anything you need and if it's not, let me know and I'll make it happen."

Having never met Dr. Strange and being unaware of exactly what his powers were, Sam startled when the small ring of fire appeared and jumped up from his seat, determined to protect Pepper and her unborn child from whatever the threat was presenting itself.

After a moment, he realized that whatever it was, Pepper wasn't threatened by it or even startled, so it must not be dangerous, so he sat back down and looked at the packet she held out to him. "Uh, thanks," he said. "Are the Avengers needed here?" He wouldn't object to being part of the team again, especially with Steve, Nat, and Wanda around.

A sad look came to Pepper's face, but pleading was in her eyes. Tony was about to become a dad and her husband officially. There were still things to take care of that only the Avengers could do. She knew that, but she hated Tony going into it.

"Yes," she said with a small nod. "Unfortunately, yes. Tony knows the most of what's going on. Steve too. You'll have to get the details from them."

	Sam couldn't help but chuckle a little even as he stood to help her up. "I'll get out of your hair," he said. "Go find this place and settle in. Thank you for your hospitality."
