"Thor," Jane said, "doesn't need to pay for airfare." He couldn't actually board an airline. Thor still had no identity, legally. He was going to fly over and meet Jane there. She was a little disappointed she wouldn't have him to lean on during the long flight.

The offer was a mini-fellowship from the Keck Observatory on the Big Island. Jane would give a couple lecture, do some consulting, and log some telescope time. The wait list for telescope time was in the years. Jane had jumped at the chance. Thor would accompany her and without Darcy it was something like a private vacation.

Thor had to entertain himself during the day when Jane was working. The trip up the mountain to the observatory was longer than she expected - almost two hours - so by the time their first weekend arrived, she was glad to have no plans.

Jane slept late and woke to the sound of birds through the open window. She rolled over and pressed her face into Thor's neck. "Mmm. Coffee."

Thor chuckled and leaned down, closing his eyes as he inhaled deeply. This Midgardian concept of 'vacation' was a quaint one. Although it was not uncommon for Asgardians to hop amongst the realms, it was usually done with a purpose. Even when they summered on Vanaheim, or Alfheim, Odin continued his duties, more often than not dragging Thor along to meet with councils, get to know communities, learn ...things. Sometimes, Frigga would step in and demand some time as a family, which Thor had always appreciated but ultimately, there was a plan when travelling.

When Jane suggested Thor come along, his first question was what was he supposed to do with his time. At the answer of 'nothing', Thor had to think about it for a while before deciding that yes, nothing was a nice thing to do. Jane should have told him there were volcanoes to explore -- that would have had him saying yes in a heartbeat. While she had been busy with her telescope, Thor was happily flitting around the many islands (so many islands!), meeting locals, and swimming. Until this moment, the beaches were his favourite part of this 'vacation' but now? Now, he would say this. Waking up in bed next to his beloved, knowing that he had a few days of time with her.

"Is this how we are greeting each other in the morn now? I must confess -- I prefer hearing words of love from your lips, but if it is coffee you crave before you can adore me, then so be it. I shall fetch some ...in a moment." He was comfortable right now.

"So needy," Jane mumbled against his skin. Thor was better at mornings than she was. It therefore seemed an equitable division of labor in their relationship that he was responsible for controlling the weather and turning on the coffee pot. To prove her point, Jane seemed to be considering a doze. Her face was still pressed into the crook of Thor's neck and her eyes were closed.

"Always needing to be adored. What are you, some kind of god or something?"

Thor grinned down at her, shifting in the bed so he could hold her close. "That is what I have been told," he agreed with a solemn nod. "A God of many things, but in this bed, I am simply nothing more than a man at your beck and call." Which meant he probably had to get up and start the coffee. He allowed himself a few more moments to indulge, before sighing deeply. Burying his face in her hair, he gave a light growl before moving.

The space provided for them was private and comfortable, and he felt no prying eyes. These days, anonymity was nigh impossible, so when he could hide in plain sight? He took it. Although the day was early, it was still a comfortable temperature. He'd fallen asleep waiting for Jane in a pair of shorts, and he felt no need to put anything else on while he waited for the coffee. Even though he preferred a coffee much stronger than Midgard could offer, he was happy to drink it as Jane preferred. Actually, he was happy for anything Jane preferred.

A few moments later, he tiptoed back into the bedroom, and smiled fondly when he saw Jane, back to sleep. "Beloved," he murmured softly, placing the two mugs on the nightstand. "We have only two days." He crawled on the bed and gently nuzzled her head with his nose. "Do you truly wish to spend them sleeping when there are so many other things we could be doing in a bed?"

"Mmmph," Jane said, throwing an arm over her face. "So needy," she mumbled at him. Still, the smell of coffee was there tempting her back into wakefulness. Jane sat up, letting the covers fall away from her as she reached over to the nightstand for a mug. "What activities?" she wanted to know. "Cards? Vigorous economic debate?"

Thor wasn't paying attention to Jane's words. The moment the blanket had slipped away, and he saw her in her night attire (he would never understand why she had a shirt to sleep in and a shirt to work in that looked exactly alike), he found it hard to concentrate. "Hm?" He glanced back up to her and gave an embarrassed look. "I'm sorry, what was that about debate? For if we are debating who is the most beautiful woman on Midgard, there is no question that it is you."

Jane reached for one of the pillows to throw at him. "You're a shameless flirt," she told him, though her cheeks were pink and her eyes sparkled behind the mess of her hair. "have you really been that badly neglected this week while I was working?"

It would be easy to take the excuse she provided, but Thor wouldn't do that. "Neglect is a strong word." He gave her a quick kiss on the nose before settling back on his side of the bed, his own coffee mug in hand. "I have found this place to be very enjoyable. There are great volcano ranges to visit, the beaches have soft sand, and of course, I have many admirers here. The food is strange, I must admit. I am not sure I care for this false loaf of meat they serve. " He wrinkled his nose and shook his head. "The apple shaped like a pine cone is better for my palate."

Jane tilted her chin forward, expecting a proper kiss, and couldn't chase away the pout when she didn't get it. Sipping her coffee hid the disappointment. "Pineapple. I want to try the spam though. I thought we might go out for breakfast and then down to the beach? Technically I have no idea what the spam is made out of. Since I don't know, I can pretend it's not pork. Might just make a vacation exception anyway. Did you know Hawaii is famous for roasting whole pigs? Very Asgardian, you'd love it."

The pout on Jane's face was adorable. He debated kissing it away but coffee. "A roasted pig?" Thor perked up at that. "I would most enjoy that. It would be wonderful to partake in some cuisine similar to my own."

Drinking his coffee, he took a moment before continuing on. "I would advise against the beach however. ‎ In approximately 2 and a half hours, there will be a storm. " Thor would actually love to be out in the storm, but he wasn't sure if Jane would like it.

"So soon?" Jane raised her eyebrows. "Is that what's got you all worked up?"

"Worked up?" Was he? He didn't think he was. He was just thoroughly enjoying laying next to her. Touching her. Teasing her. Currently, his hand was slowly drawing circles on her thigh. "I am afraid I do not know what my lady means."

"It means," Jane said, holding back a laugh, "that you got up this morning looking to jump this lady's bones. And don't say you don't know what that means either. I know you do."

Thor had the decency to look admonished, but he didn't draw his hand away. "Can you blame me?," he asked instead putting his half empty mug back on the nightstand, and leaning forward to trail kisses on the side of her face, purposefully missing her lips. "It is not often that we have this time together, free of all obligations. I worry that this streak of privacy will soon vanish, as it is wont to do when I would wish it otherwise."‎

Jane made a low frustrated noise even as the corner of her mouth twitched at the tickle of his beard. What he was saying though worried her too. He was afraid he was going to have to leave again. "If Tony Stark calls for you, tell him you're busy. If he doesn't like it, he can talk to me." The last of her coffee abandoned, she reached out to twist her fingers through Thor's hair.

"Did you want to stay? Or do you want to watch the storm? We could swim for awhile, wait for it to come in? I'll watch the storm with you. Or am I not getting you out of bed today?"

"Why must I choose," he said with a cheeky grin, leaning forward to let her play with his hair. He laid there in silence for a while before answering her question. "I must confess, natural storms are invigorating. I would wish nothing more than to go to the beach with you, and enjoy it together. I can ensure that nary a raindrop touch your head if you so choose...although, if you would like to fully experience the storm with me, well, I would not be adverse to that either." He was already picturing it in his head and it was a very pleasant image. "Although, as I mentioned earlier, we still have a couple of hours...."

"Shameless." He'd put in a braid behind his ear sometime this week and Jane rubbed it through her thumb and forefinger. "You're forgetting one thing..." She rolled onto her hip to lean over him and press her mouth briefly against Thor's. "...I'm hungry. Let's get something to eat and then I'll play in the storm with you. Deal?"

He groaned against her mouth, his hands now freely roaming across her back. It was on the tip of his tongue to say he hungered for something else, but his traitourous stomach made itself known. "Breakfast," he agreed, stealing another kiss. And maybe another. And a last one for good measure. "Waffles."

~*~*~*

By the time they finished breakfast and got down to the water on a pace that the locals referred to as "island time" there wasn't that long before the storm arrived. The sky had gone flat and grey and people were starting to pack up their towels and umbrellas as the wind kicked up. Jane would have liked to get in the water but the waves were starting to rise in a way that made her nervous considering her short size. Instead, she stripped down to her swimsuit and stood at the shore line, letting the waves wash over the top of her feet. Thor had been waylaid by a couple of admirers but it looked like they might be clearing off. The air felt heavy and out in the distance over the water came the first low rumbles of thunder.

When it looked like the group asking for pictures had moved away, Jane walked back over to Thor. A couple of he girls were casting last looks over their shoulders and Jane wondered if she looked to them like another autograph hunter. She studied Thors face, looking for a sign of how the weather was affecting him. "What's it feel like to you? The storm?"

It was times like this that Thor wished to be a wordsmith like his brother. How could he describe to Jane the sheer energy that one simple lightning bolt had? That the smell alone sent him into an almost primal state, where he wanted to simply exist within the energy, take it deep into his very essence, and let it flow out? Or that the storm was very much alive, caressing him with promises of power, strength, and unlimited energy....

Instead, he reached out to Jane, not caring that others were looking, so that he could hold her hand in his. Sometimes, he couldn't get over their difference in size . She was so little, so delicate, and yet so strong.... "The storm calls to me," he said simply. "I know its pattern, its wants and they fulfill me as I fulfill it." He glanced up. The storm clouds were gathering. "There is still time to go inside if you wish. I would not fault you. I do not think this will be a small storm."

The human body could conduct an electrical current, Jane knew. She tried to imagine Thor's power flowing into her through their linked hands, that she could reach out into a thunderstorm and draw its power into herself. How heady it must be to know that when the thunder rolled it was beating a drumbeat just for you. "I'll stay unless you tell me it's not safe." Every warning Jane had ever head about the risk of lightning strikes near water echoed through her head but look who she was with. She wasn't afraid of lightning.

"There is no place safer for you than by my side," Thor responded with a touch of cockiness. He knew his powers, knew he could control this storm. "I can control the rain such that you will remain dry and untouched, if you prefer."

Jane could accept his suggestion to retreat indoors. It would be easier and certainly more comfortable. Or she could accept this was part of who Thor was and be part of it with him. She'd seen Thor use his power for battle. She wanted to see what this natural elemental side looked like. Jane was glad she tied her hair back into a ponytail to keep it out of her face. "I'm okay."

‎Thor beamed down at Jane, and lightly hugged her before stepping back. The rain had lightly started, and it was barely any effort to re-direct it away from Jane. To an outside viewer, it would look almost like she had an umbrella as the rain started to really pour down.

Refusing such a luxury, Thor stepped out, allowing himself to be covered in water. His hair, neatly tied back earlier was curling from the humidity, and his beard was dripping water. With one hand, he clenched his fist before opening it just in time to catch a literal thunderbolt. Because he was consuming the energy, there was almost no effect around him. It looked effortless, like he was always doing this, but internally, he was grinning. Now this -- THIS was a battle.

Jane reached out, breaching the circumference of her circle to let the rain fall onto her palm. She stepped forward, half expecting the circle to move with her - he'd done something similar - but Thor didn't seem to notice she'd moved and the circle remained a dry home base. Jane was instantly drenched. Her first thought was to stand beside Thor and experience this with him when the lightning came down. Jane didn't know if he'd made the bolt or simply called the natural energy in the clouds to him. It was different than the way she'd seen Thor use lightning before and Jane quickly realized she needed to keep some space between them. Touching Thor when the lightning came would stop her heart, even if she had been wearing her rubber-soled boots, instead of being barefoot as she was now.

With the smell of ozone cutting through the scent of the rain and burning her nose, she took a big step back. Jane was half in the circle, half out now. Her back leg was on dry sand while rain lashed at her face. At this angle, with Thor ahead and his back to her, water dripping off his chest as he let the storm into him, Jane could appreciate how old Thor really was and how the Vikings had called him a god.

Thor hadn't realized Jane had escaped his little circle of protection, but his eyes were closed now, allowing himself to be rejuvenated by the weather. The water was washing down his face, cleansing him in a way that he didn't realize he'd needed. Since his return to Midgard, he'd kept himself close to Jane and the Avengers, doing whatever was needed of him. He hadn't really taken a moment to regenerate, to fully embrace his powers on this realm where anything out of the ordinary was faced with fear.

In all honesty, doing this in such a public area was probably not advisable. He hoped no one was filming or taking pictures and reluctantly, he sent the bolt back to the heavens. Turning his head, he grinned wildly at Jane. Stretching out his arms for her, he shook his head, smile firmly in place. "If you do not wish to be dry, then at least let me warm you."

Thor grinned at her and Jane was instantly put in mind of a Labrador the moment before it lept into the swimming pool. He seemed happy and absolutely in his element - pretty much literally. It wasn't as if it had never rained while he was here. London was nothing if not full of grey dreary day but this storm felt different. Maybe it was the additional moisture in the air in this part of the world, maybe it was something about stormwatching along the water with nothing but the horizon open in front of them.

"I was curious." Jane's eyes flicked to the sky as if she could predict another bolt of lightning but she accepted the trust that Thor would not call her if it was unsafe and stepped forward. There was a sharp tingling when Jane touched Thor's skin and she jumped a little in surprise. It was a bit like a cross between static shock and the feeling of pins and needles when your foot falls asleep. "Easy," she said. "I can feel the lightning."

He looked down curiously before giving an apologetic shrug. "Yes, I can feel it coursing through my veins, but it should cause you no harm. It is safely kept, as are you." With a flourish, he pulled her close and gave her a deep kiss, a bit more forcefully than he usually did but he couldn't help it -- he was full of energy (literally). "Shall we fly somewhere? Chase a cloud? Dance on a volcano? Whatever you wish, I am yours to command." Each question was punctuated with a kiss. By the Norns, he truly loved this woman.

Kissing in the rain wasn't quite as sexy as Hollywood suggested. Breathing was tricky trying to keep water out of her mouth and nose and the strands of her hair that escaped her ponytail were plastered to her forehead. But Thor's mouth was warm and even if it was only her imagination, she could feel the tingle of lightning on his lips. She liked it. It felt elemental and made it easier to pretend like she could feel the storm the way Thor could.

Jane reached up and curled her hand behind his ear. "Dork. How much longer is the storm going to last? I'm happy to stay out here in the rain as long as you want. But so long as there's sunshine and water to play in later, I can think of somewhere we can be."

Thor's sudden good mood was evidenced by the sun slowly peeking through the clouds. Just as quickly as the rain started, it ended, leaving them standing in wet sand, water dripping down. "Well, we clearly must get out of these wet things. There is plenty of time later to explore, don't you think?" Besides, it really didn't matter where he was -- as long as Jane was there, he was happy.
