Lazy Sunday
Who: Marco and Tarim Vasquez
When: Sunday Evening
Where: The Vasquez apartment, South-East Quarter
What: Brothers bonding over video games
Rating: PG for safety, will update if content changes unexpectedly
Status: In Progress

The Vasquez brothers weren't very sentimental, but like any family, they had their traditions. Two years ago, Tarim had bought an old Super Nintendo from a kid at a garage sale, including several games. Ever since, the brothers had held Sunday evening as a holy night: Marco had several hours off of work, and Tarim was usually finished with all his homework. So, for nearly two years now, the boys had a weekly video game brawl to top of their week.

For Tarim, he was grateful for an excuse to take a night off from his "job" in Downtown. He had lost his focus the night before, and earned a nasty cut along his right arm for his efforts. Luckily, Marco had been off at a job all day, so he could clean and bandage it properly. Now that Marco's shift is nearly over, he wears a long-sleeved shirt; he might be sweating, but it's better than having to lie to Marco about yet another beating.

It's a little after seven, around the time Marco is due home. After a day of homework, first aid and cooking, Tarim places a bowl of chips and dip on the coffee table, before taking a seat. Holding a controller loosely in his hands, Tarim watches as Mario and Luigi bounce along the screen until he hears the door open. "Marco!" He shouts, grinning to himself as he holds up another controller. "It's game time!"

Marco had expected Tarim to assault him with video games once he got home, he had just expected to make it through the door first. He almost sighed, hoping to at least get a shower before being pulled into what could possibly be hours of 8-bit entertainment. Oh well.

Only pausing to grab a chip and bury it in dip, Marco found his normal seat on the worn-out couch. "Mario?" He said, noting the character bouncing on the screen. "Didn't we just play this?" he asked as he shoved the chip into his mouth. As an afterthought, he added "Did you make this dip?"

Tarim grins widely, watching Marco carefully as he eats. "Yeah, but last time you won. And only because you distracted me from the spiney. I need to win this time!" He explains, waiting for Marco to swallow before continuing. "I finished my homework early, so I looked up a recipe online, since it was too hot out to go to the soccer field... is it okay?" After thinking for a moment, he helpfully adds, "It doesn't have nuts!"

"It's good." Marco smirked, always amused by Tarim's need to inform him about his cooking's lack of nuts. Tarim had only added something with nuts to his cooking once, almost a year ago, and since then Marco couldn't remember having a meal where Tarim didn't inform him about the nuts that may or may not be in his food.

"Wait, did you just tell me that you need to win?" Marco took the controller. "And what if you don't?"

"Well, then I lose." Tarim states after a moment of thought, staring at his brother seriously. "And I can't lose a video game to my guardian. You know that's like losing a video game to your parents?" He asks, once again serious, before swallowing another chip. "And then I lose all my cred. You know how important cred is to me!"

Marco wondered if his expression was conveying just how baffled that whole statement made him. "How much cred could you possibly have? I beat you every week." He reminded him, smirking again. Then, seriously, "I told you to stop calling me your guardian. It sounds... corny. And it's acceptable to lose video games to your brother. Especially when your brother is, well, me."

"Yeah, yeah..." Tarim chides, scooting over so Marco can sit with a good view of the couch. He winces slightly, his bandaged arm rubbing against the couch, but he hides it by fiddling with his controller; Tarim had become pretty good at hiding the bruises and cuts from his job. "But you're my guardian if anyone from school asks. Jason Peters is still pissed you pulled him over." Jason is a senior at AHS, and two months ago was arrested for underage drinking... by Marco. Tarim was still trying to live it down.

"Jason Peters was drinking underage and driving under the influence. I really don't care too much about what he feels about me." Marco muttered. He pulled his shoes off and propped his feet up on the coffee table, not caring too much about the fact that his socks were next to the chips.

Marco finally started up the game, trying to get comfortable while going through the first level. "So, what'd you do today?" He asked, despite being slightly distracted.

Tarim sinks into the couch as Luigi - he always plays Luigi - stomps a turtle before Mario could reach it. "Not much. Finished my history paper. I never want to read about women's liberation again." He mutters, biting his tongue slightly as he gets further into the game. "Did you have to go to the Vale today?" He teases, taking just a moment to glance at Marco. Marco knows Tarim reads his blog, and he had laughed to himself this morning when he saw Marco's latest rant...

Marco glanced at Tarim out of the corner of his eye, which cost him a mushroom, or something, he'd sort of missed what it was when Luigi beat him to it. "No, but I was lucky enough to be Uptown right by everyone's headquarters. I didn't see anyone, but being there in that mood just sucks." He complained. "But, whatever. You know? It's one guy's opinion."

Tarim nods, trying to hide a smile. Marco was clearly in a bad mood, it wouldn't be good to push his buttons too much... "Did you get any autographs for me?" He's finally unable to resist, breaking into a grin. "I bet Watchtower is there. You should get her autograph. She's the prettiest."

The look that Marco gave Tarim was a decent mix of amusement and annoyance, and went on just long enough to effectively kill off Mario, at least for a moment. Then Marco shook his head and returned to the game. "How many years do you have left of this awkward teenage stuff again?"

"Until that subscription of Maxim that's supposed to go to our neighbors runs out?" Tarim ventures, grinning triumphantly as Luigi takes the lead. Marco was always the first one to get the mail; he probably didn't know Tarim knew of that little goldmine. "I mean, come on, it's not like I bring girls over while you're away. That you know of." He adds, quickly swiping a chip while trying to play in one hand. It doesn't go well.

"...need to move out of the South East Quarter, all out roommates are perverts and stoners..." Marco just muttered to himself. At this point, Marco wasn't so much as trying to win the game as just stay in it. "Yeah, just don't get her pregnant, okay? Use protection. Not like magic shield protection."

"You mean Stella?" Tarim asks, as Luigi runs face-first into a koopa. Tarim fakes a smile; Marco can tell that it's a valiant attempt to hide his true feelings. "Well, I was going to ask her out, I was even planning on movies and maybe dinner..." Tarim sighs. "But I asked if she's busy this weekend, and she said she's going out with Tommy. Tommy! The forward! The guy who calls me a fag because I'd rather work on homework then lift weights." Of course, Tarim would rather lift weights with the team, but he had to get home early to get ready for his trips Downtown... not that he can tell Marco that.

Marco frowned. "Sorry dude. That's rough. I know what you're going through. I told you about me and Michelle, right?" Michelle was a girl on the track team when Marco was in high school. She went out with Kristian, some guy on the hockey team, which meant that when Kristian found out that Marco was after his girl, it only took one party before Marco was beat up and left duct-taped to a tree. Tarim, of course, would remember all of this because Marco was still to young to have a job, so he would come home and tell him about everything, sometimes in agonizing detail.

"I mean, it'll work out. You're young, you're a good guy. It'll happen for you."

Tarim blushes a bit. He likes it when Marco dotes, but it's not something he gets used to. "Good thing I don't go to parties either, then." He smirks, still fiddling with his controller. "Maybe I should start hanging out in the Vale. I bet the girl's at the Academy would be easier, they don't know I used to be a freak. Clean slate!" Tarim had wanted to attend the Academy, but between the distance and the tuition, it was too excessive for the Vasquez's.

Marco paused, frowning, and almost killing Mario in the process. "I was, uh, actually thinking about that. I mean... I was thinking that my job at Michael's is only a couple times a week, and it doesn't pay too much, and there are places that are hiring part-time, so I could get another job..." Marco rattled this all off without looking away from the TV screen. "Then we could maybe afford to send you to the Academy." Marco worried that one of these days someone would realize that Tarim had abilities, and his teachers would eventually force him out. He wanted Tarim to go to the Academy, but it was difficult.

"I mean, you'd have to take the bus, which isn't anything new, and we might have to give up our Sunday games for a while... You'd have to take it easy on the waffle sandwiches... But it's possible, maybe. Maybe for next semester, if I can find something paying enough."

Tarim shivers; it feels like someone dropped an ice cube in his stomach, and the cold is now spreading throughout his body as he listens to Marco. In truth, Tarim would love to go to the academy. Although some of his peers have warmed up to him, he has no real friends, and plenty of kids still remember him as the freak who always fell apart until he was thirteen. On top of that, he's nearly been caught; he once accidentally shielded himself when a teammate kicked a ball at him unexpectedly. Luckily, they just thought Tarim had great reflexes, they hadn't noticed the shield. He has a bad feeling, though, that it is only a matter of time...

However, as much as Tarim wants to go, he doesn't know if he can. Marco already works his ass off, could he really make Marco take on even more shifts? On top of that, going to the Academy would mean a longer commute, and less time to spend on his own superheroics. "Maybe next school year?" Tarim mutters, staring intently at his sneakers, and subconsciously rubbing his sore arm. "I've been needing to get a job for awhile. If I get a part-time job, and work during the school year, I might be able to save up enough for tuition, right?" He smiles shyly. "Besides, I'm doing really good in soccer, we beat the Academy last time..."

Marco nodded, but was still considering his brother's idea. "We can wait. I mean, that's an option, but I don't want you to stop focusing on school for a job, especially one that's paying for school. But we'll worry about it when we get to it." Marco was convinced that Tarim had more of an opportunity to do something impressive in his life, like become a doctor or something worthwhile. By the time Tarim would graduate high school, Marco was positive that he could easily be outsmarted by the kid. Marco already was doing what he figured he'd be doing for the rest of his life, so he didn't want to knock Tarim off track with a job.

"How are you doing in school, anyway?"

Tarim sighs, leaning his head back and thinking. "I got an A on my women's lib paper for sociology. I finished War and Peace, and I did good on the quiz. I'm still pulling a C in chemistry." The C was a considerable improvement over Tarim's last science grade. "...and I'm still getting tutored for math. But I'm passing this time!" He adds defensively. "So it's going good! I think the teacher's are getting more relaxed too, Ms. Burns stops asking if I need to take a 'mental break'."

"Okay, good." Marco laughed. "Man, I wish that I got the opportunity to take a mental break in school. I'm not going to say that you're lucky, but... You're a little lucky." He joked. "How's that going, anyway?" Marco probably asked about Tarim's mental well being more than he should have, always slightly worried that one day his grasp on his powers would falter.

"Yeah, I can take my mental breaks along with the seniors and their smoke breaks. Real lucky." Tarim responds, though smirking. Maybe there were a few perks. At Marco's second question, Tarim sighs and bows his head. Although he sometimes likes the doting, it's hard to describe his... fits to Marco. "It's been going okay. Same old, same old, right? Sometimes when I'm stressed I start to... feel too much, but it's nothing like before. I'm still in control, it's just like having a bad headache." He explains, struggling with his words. "It's been pretty much the same ever since- yeah." Whenever the subject of Tarim's disappearance comes up, Marco always gets a weird little eye twitch. Tarim tries to avoid the eye twitch.

Marco just nodded, also trying to avoid the eye twitch. He'd tried for months to find out about where Tarim had vanished to, and came up with nothing. At this point it was just easier to be grateful that Tarim came back in one piece. "Good. That's good." he mumbled. Nope, too late, there went Marco's eye. Marco put his hand up to try to stop it, or at least cover it, but he couldn't quite stop the eye twitching and save Mario at the same time.

Tarim groans loudly as Marco's eye twitches, before his brother can cover it. Somehow, even when trying to avoid it, he still twitches that damned eye. "I'm sorry you were scared, but look! I'm back, I'm living with you, and I'm not a freak anymore." He proclaims, his voice raising a few octaves. "I know you hate it, but it's the best thing that ever happened to me! You shouldn't be so mad!"

"Don't call yourself a freak." Marco rolled his eyes, despite the twitching. He paused the game, since Tarim was yelling, and he honestly wasn't sure why. "I'm just having trouble understanding how you have no memory of any of it, and there was no evidence at all! You were gone for weeks, it makes no sense!"
