OOC NOTICE TO ALL THOSE IN AU

[info]jessicaayala
[info]au_board
I am making this post here ooc to notify all au players of some changes that are going to be made within AU's Greek system. I have assisted in the organization of AU's Greek life since the community first opened and I am now helping out once more. Our goal is to re-vamp and revitalize Greek life here at AU. And we are going to need help from you in order to so. But before I get to that, let's start with some of the notable changes that will be made, starting at the end of this current semester.

The Greek system consists of the big/little brother/sister relationships. In the past, we haven't implemented this much because there were uncertainties as to how it would run. However, we have finally figured it out. The way that we are hoping that it will work is that every person that is currently in the greek system will take a little brother or sister in the fall. For example, Alicia Williams is currently a member of AKA. Come Fall, she will take a little sister from the girls who pledge AKA that term. This will be an organized selection process, so you will have the opportunity to choose who your little brother/sister will be. This will all be explained in greater detail when RUSH approaches. The ONLY exceptions to this will be the seniors. They are the only ones who have the options to decline taking a little because it would be unfair, given the limited amount of time that they have left at AU. So, for example, Beyonce will be a senior in the fall. She may decline taking a little sister this fall because of her senior status. By the time initiation rolls around in late Sept/October, the Greek Information post will be edited to include a list of bigs and littles.

In addition to the big/little system, there will be socials and other events to revitalize AU's Greek life. Now, because of these changes, we are going to be giving everyone currently at AU the opportunity to get in on Greek life now before the changes begin. Meaning that if you play a student at AU who is not yet in the Greek system, but you have decided that you now want them to be, you can sign them up now and we will change it so that they will already be a brother/sister so that come fall, they can take on little's of their own. An example of this would be if say Kevin Austen wants to be a PIKE. He can comment here, saying that he's a PIKE brother, pledged in the spring, whatever. He will be added to the list of brothers and will therefore be included in this summer/fall's activities.

Lastly, I am going to re-post the executive board positions for the sororities and fraternities here. If you are a Greek, feel free to comment with the position that you will be holding within your organization come fall. This means that you are not currently holding that position, but that you have been voted in by fellow members of your sorority/fraternity to hold that position once this semester ends. Example, Brian Spears is the current Membership Chairman of Kappa Sigma. However, next semester, he wants to be Recruitment Chair. He comments here with "Kappa Sig recruitment chair" and that will be his new position. Now, as far as the president position, you must hold JUNIOR STANDING AT THE VERY LEAST for this position. It should also be noted that you MUST live in the house to hold this title. So a sophomore who has an apartment off-campus cannot be the president of his fraternity. It doesn't make sense. And just to clarify, whatever position you comment with will be effective as of May 7th, the day after the Spring '08 semester ends. I say this because in theory, Greek organizations spend time over the summer preparing for RUSH in August. So the recruitment chair whose job it is to oversee all aspects of recruitment, would begin their terms as of May, straight through the spring of '09. Makes sense, right? This goes for all positions. They will be from Spring '08-spring '09.

Now, we currently have two presidents, Beyonce (AKA) and Sophia (Pi Phi). Both of these ladies are almost seniors and they presided over their organizations for the '07-'08 academic year. Because we are restructuring the system, we are going to give them the opportunity to keep their positions as president. This goes to all current Greeks as well. If you wish to maintain the same position that you already have for next year, feel free to comment here saying so. We are doing this to give you all a chance to actually do something.

So, that said, if you are a Greek or you have decided after reading this that you want to be, comment here with the following:
Name of organization which you are a member of: (Pike, AKA, etc)
Position for '08-'09 term: (Secretary, treasurer, etc)
In house or not: (will you be living in the house or not. Please keep in mind that most positions will require you to live in the house)

Feel free to send me a PM if you have any questions.

IT'S FOX DAY 2008!

[info]au_dean_maya
[info]au_board
This means, NO SCHOOL! Enjoy the day!

Fox Day is a long-standing and much-loved tradition at Altamont University. One day each spring, the President cancels all classes, providing students, faculty, and staff with a surprise day off. A statue of the AU fox appears on the Main lawn early in the morning, and the Chapel bell rings to alert students, many of whom immediately head for the beach. The three-foot-high, 300-pound statue, with its knowing air, the hint of a smirk playing at its lips, contemplates the campus all day, watching students, faculty, and staff enjoy their brief respite.

The tradition of Fox Day, like so much AU lore, is rich and fascinating. In January 1934, Hamilton Holt, who served as AU’s president from 1925 to 1949, acquired statues of a fox and a cat from Senator Murray Sams. These statues were permanently placed on the walkway of Rec Hall—a structure the pool has since replaced.

Inspired by the two statues, Holt founded a "Cat Society" for women and a "Fox Society" for men. According to the AU Archives, these societies were exclusive groups made up of four women and four men each. Members were elected by an annual vote of the student body. The women elected the foxes and the men elected the cats.

The privileged members of the two societies were the only people permitted to touch the statues. But occasionally, the fox and cat were taken and hidden as practical jokes. Unfortunately, in 1949, the cat statue was smashed beyond repair. To this day, the crime remains unsolved.

On May 17, 1956, President Hugh McKean (1951-1969) started Fox Day. The grief-stricken, lonely fox was placed on the horseshoe, and the day’s classes were canceled. After a brief assembly, activities began at 5:30 a.m. with a treasure hunt and ended with a square dance and an evening picnic.

The students enjoyed the tradition so well that in 1958 when President McKean discarded it, they resurrected Fox Day themselves. This initiated an agreement between the students and Dr. McKean, who granted them freedom for the day on the condition that they return in the evening for a picnic and a choir performance in the Knowles Chapel. When President Jack Critchfield (1969-1978) came to Rollins, he discontinued the tradition due to the turbulence of the period.

The savvy fox found his way back to campus in 1979, during Thaddeus Seymour's administration (1978-1990). Seymour said, "When I was president of Wabash College in Indiana, we had a similar day called 'Elmore Day.' It was very natural to me, and I believe any sensible college should have a day like this." So the popular Fox Day was reinstated and continues today.

The second film, "A Love During the War," tackles the subject of rape as a weapon of war in the Congo, following the committed journalist Aziza as she seeks out those affected.
