Truthfully, Hazel didn't expect anything of Ernie at all, but her enthusiasm for the lesson disguised just how much she'd looked forward to spending more time with him. If there was one thing Hazel had learned about boys, it was that seeming like you were excited to be with them for them was the quickest route to running them off. It didn't make any sense to Hazel - for her it would've been quite the opposite - but loads of things about the opposite sex didn't make sense to Hazel.
