"Sure it does, but at what cost? We make it through this and then what? There's a point where mere survival isn't much if you lose everything and everyone that you care about."
Ernie stopped walking, turning to face her. "There are a lot of people dying, Avery. It's not inconsequential. So let's not sit here making petty small talk and pretending that we're anything other than on opposite sides."
He turned again, continuing to walk down the hallway, not bothering to wait for her to follow. That had been a bit much and he knew it. He was sure he'd end up regretting the words, they were asking for trouble, but he was just so damn tired of pretending to be neutral all the time when he wasn't.
He stopped walking again, though, when he thought he heard voices and noises coming from a nearby classroom.
