Who: Severus Snape, Ernie Macmillan
What: The Headmaster has a few instructions for this year's Head Boy.
When: BACKSTORY for the Plottery: September 2, 1997
Where: The Headmaster's office at Hogwarts.
Rating: Low, likely.
Severus sat behind the immense polished wood desk that had belonged to his predecessor, contemplating two small stacks of parchment that lay in front of him. Dumbledore's portrait hung directly behind him, and Severus swore to himself that he could almost feel Albus' blue eyes boring holes in the back of his head. Even though he'd been occupying the office for several weeks now, he still had not quite gotten used to the sensation. He steepled his fingers and leaned back in the chair, his gaze lifting and soaring out of the windows across from the desk. The Scottish hillside was sickeningly bucolic in the early morning sunlight, and if Severus were the sort of person to soak in such vistas, he would have been a happy man indeed.
As it was, his mind was not on the sun dappled hills, but on the students who were about to appear before him. One Mr. Macmillan, Hufflepuff, and one Miss Patil, Ravenclaw. Each was coming to see him individually to receive their start of year instructions as Head Boy and Head Girl. While it was true that most of the specifics had been sent to them by owl already when they received their Hogwarts letters, there were a few particular points that the Headmaster traditionally reviewed in person with the chosen students before the first day of classes. It was also traditionally a time for the Headmaster to congratulate the students face to face; however, this year it would serve an additional purpose for Severus.
When he'd made his final selections for the Head positions this year, it had come after long and careful deliberation. He'd had to choose carefully, the students picked not only for their strong academic records, but also for certain other factors. Selecting anyone from Gryffindor, even if he'd been inclined to, would have been impossible given that the Dark Lord had gifted him with the position in which he now found himself. No one from Potter's house would have been acceptable in any way. Choosing from his own house would have been infinitely easier, and there were certainly worthy students in Slytherin House, but he could foresee that putting students such as Draco Malfoy and Pansy Parkinson in positions of authority when coupled with the influence of the lumpish idiots who had been given control of DADA and Muggle Studies would quickly drown out any strain of resistance in the rest of the students. And, for the sake of his other patron, whose eyes weighed heavily on him even now, they must resist.
It had come down, therefore, to Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff. The two houses that no one who had their hooks in him could truly argue with. And, honestly, with the absence of the insufferable Granger, Miss Patil was the most likely candidate for the job of Head Girl anyhow. He was less sure of Macmillan as Head Boy, but time and time alone would tell if he had made the right decisions. Just then, the circular staircase leading into the office ground into action and Severus straightened, leaning forward over the desk and awaiting the first of the two. When the staircase finally ceased its spiraling, the new Head Boy stood just inside the office.
"Mr. Macmillan, enter."
