Percy was using the excuse to himself that the only way to ensure something was done properly was to do it himself as a reason why he was standing outside of Audrey's office. He could have sent anyone for the departmental report that had been due to him and subsequently to the Minster the previous morning, but he elected to take the task upon himself, instead. Numbered first among his reasons was the unbearable compulsion to apologize to Audrey for what had happened outside of work, and Percy had yet to think of a reason how one might do that when he only encountered her at work.
Thus, there he was, entering her office when she beckoned - somewhat sharply, he thought - and closing the door formally behind him. In his most official - and in his opinion least threatening - voice, he greeted her.
