Reluctant though she was to lift her head from the pillow, Lavender pushed herself into a sitting position. Usually, she loved gifts, and loved surprises even more. That her friends thought of her while they were on their date was enough to warm her bitter little heart, but the smile slipped from her face when she saw the bag.
They thought of her. They were her best friends and she had been festering in nasty thoughts about them. Her shame made her want to spill out all the worries she had over their friendships, which she would have always thought were rock solid, but which really were brittle. Lavender took the bag and peeked inside, seeing a selection of sugar quills and colourful macaroons that she loved so much.
"You really didn't have to do that," Lavender said, and despite herself, her voice came out a few octaves higher than usual. Leaning forward, she pulled Parvati into a hug and pressed a kiss to her hair, giving her a tight squeeze before letting go. "What did I do to deserve such great friends? You were on a date for goodness sake, you didn't need to get me anything."
