Who: Alecto Carrow, all seventh year students
What: Crucio's got nothin' on the switchblade.
Where: Hogwarts, Muggle Studies classroom
When: Thursday, 6 January
Rating: PG-13
Note: sixth year students would have had the same lesson, but because of the low number of sixth-year students cast, we will not be threading their lesson... this time!
A great bear of a woman, what Alecto lacked in grace herself she made up for in observing the postures and bodies of others: their scurrying when they were anxious, the tucks of their chins when uncertain or shy, the bold thrust of the shoulders or hips when the the proudest of them entered a room. Children were no different, if anything, they made her job easier.
She noted that the room arrangement stopped those who might have rushed nervously to their seats, or strode confidently, or loitered outside of the classroom door for as long as possible. Instead of the usual rows of desks there were now clusters of chairs enough to accommodate the whole class, each group with a Pensieve the size of a washtub in the middle. Memories swirled like oil in each, memories which had in some cases been difficult to acquire, and in others, given over by eager volunteers to the cause.
"For those of you who don't know, what you're looking at is a Pensieve. It is a means by which wizards and witches may share and review their memories," she offered when they had settled, squirmy little bodies penned in by rules and the hoarse, almost masculine baritone of her voice. "Today we will do more than simply discuss the violent and unpredictable nature of Muggles, we will witness the consequences of our failure to guide them."
Much though she might rather have forced some of their heads under water and held them there, Alecto demonstrated dispassionately how they were to bend their heads into the washtubs, waiting and watching for when they would do the same. Each group could witness the memory at the same time. Their fear would be contagious, and only the Dark Lord would have the cure.
