Just trying to get some work done
"Daniel! Hold up!"
Daniel turned and saw Rodney hobbling toward him. He let out a sigh before looking around. The last thing he needed at the moment was Rodney bugging him. But, there was no place to hide and soon Rodney was mere inches from him. "What?" he asked before he turned and started to walk again. He didn't have time to stand around and chat.
"Have you seen Sam? I need to ask her something," Rodney said as he started to walk with Daniel. He then grimaced. "Slow down! I'm hurt, you know!"
Looking at the other man, Daniel just stared at him. When wasn't Rodney hurt? Shaking his head, he shifted the books in his arms. "Sam and Cameron went to the mainland. According to Woosley, they went to get parts to fix the Gate," he said. None of them were stupid - except for Woosley - and it was pretty clear what Sam and Cameron were doing on the mainland.
He tried not to be jealous of his friends, but it was hard. They got to be with the people they loved, while Daniel couldn't. He loved John Sheppard more than he had ever loved anyone else. Not only was John his best friend but there was something more there. However, both of them knew they couldn't act on their wants. John was in the Air Force and they couldn't trust Woosley enough not to tell the IOA they were together. The last thing Daniel wanted was to cause John trouble.
"You'd think Mitchell would have better work ethics and not pull Sam away from her duties," Rodney scoffed.
"Yeah," Daniel said as he slowed. He pointed to the door on their left before looking at Rodney. "I need to finish some translations."
Before Rodney could answer, Daniel ducked inside his lab. Sitting down, he looked down at the pile of papers in front of them. While they were fixing the city, one of the scientists found some ancient writing near one of the city's star drives. None of them knew what it was, or if it was important, so they looked to Daniel to translate it. The writing hadn't been easy to translate since it had no set pattern. And Daniel knew there was a good chance it was nothing - just something the Ancients did because they felt like it.
Shifting in his chair, Daniel went to work. Hours had passed, it seemed, when it all finally fell into place. With a grin, Daniel picked up his pad and hurried out of his lab. He was pretty sure Sam wasn't back yet so the next person on his list was John. Going to the other man's makeshift office, Daniel hurried in and grinned. "I got it!" he exclaimed. "It's a way to boost the star drives' power. I'm not a scientist so I don't know if it's anything they could use but...it's translated. Sam isn't here and I could give a flying fuck about Woosley. Think I should send this to Doctor Burkle and Doctor McKay - the girl McKay? Maybe they could check it out."
He bounced on the balls of his feet and handed the pad to John so he could look at it.
