It's been a hard few months...
"Mr. Woolsey, you standing over me is not going to get this done any faster," Sam said as she looked up from the console she was working on in Atlantis' Control Room. Putting the scanner she had been using aside, she raised her eyebrows, wondering if he would take her not-so-subtle hint and leave her the hell alone. She glanced over at Radek, who just shrugged at her.
"You said that this would be done three days ago," he answered, crossing his arms as he leaned against the next console. When something beeped at him, he jumped and looked at where his butt had hit before clasping his hands behind his back and staring down at her. Sam snorted softly - the guy had nothing on her squad leader at officer training.
Instead, she took the ancient tool Radek handed her and pulled herself back into the console. "That was also before we found out how widespread the burnout was. The crystals and connections are very delicate; you can't just duct tape them back together, no matter what MacGyver would have you believe. I'm almost done, but with you standing over me, I'm more likely to knock something else out. In fact..." She used her knuckles to knock the back of the console. "Oh...oh dear..."
She heard a very audible sigh. "Just let me know when you're finished," he said, followed by the sound of footsteps.
Shaking her head, she went back to work on rebuilding the connections in the dialing console. Following Atlantis' rather spectacular return to Earth a few months before to stop the Wraith from invading, the city had seen several system failures due to the beating it had taken during the fight. Sam had been asked to help with the rebuilding, especially with the Gate system due to her work on the Earth Gate, and given how much Atlantis had come to mean to her during her tenure as its leader, she had agreed. At least they had also asked Cam to come out and assist Colonel Sheppard with security. It would have been a very lonely few months otherwise.
And at least they were almost done now. All she had to do was get the Gate connected to the dialing system again.
As she finished one last connection, she heard an unmistakable hum and pushed herself out of the console just as Radek called to her.
"Colonel Carter, I..." He suddenly trailed off and looked over at her with an apologetic look. "Sorry, Doctor Carter. I'm still not used to that."
"That's okay. I still find myself answering," she said as she brushed herself off and stood up to join him.
"I show green on the connection between the Gate and the dialing device," he told her, pointing to the console's monitor.
She typed the first few symbols of the earth address into the system, watching as the Gate started spinning. She then hit the button to abort the sequence and grinned. "So how long should we let Woolsey stew before we tell him?"
